The Spring semester is already half-over! That’s crazy!

They say time flies
when you’re having fun, but I wouldn’t considering studying and homework
fun, so maybe the expression should be “time flies when you’re always
busy”. Anyway...
Between March 21st and 26th, Engineering Student Council hosts the 63rd
annual E-Week! E-Week is a Swanson-wide competition in which each department competes to earn points for their department! The department that
has the most points at the end of the week wins E-Week and has bragging
rights for a year! This year’s theme is Pixar and plenty of amazing events
are planned for an amazing week! More information about E-Week can be
found on pages 3 & 4!
As always, the Enginews is brought to you by Pitt’s Engineering Student
Council (ESC). As the SSOE umbrella organization, it is our goal to keep
you informed and help you get involved!

What Is ESC?
Engineering Student Council is a close-knit organization that encourages both
social and professional growth for our members. We achieve this with a variety
of activities held each year. We were awarded Best Engineering Student Council in the nation in 2014 and plan to accomplish even more this year! We accept
applications for membership on a rolling basis– more information on joining ESC
can be found on our website!

What’s In Store This Month?
General Body Meeting — Anyone who has an interest in joining ESC should
attend this meeting on Wednesday 3/16 at 9 p.m. in Benedum G30!
E-Week — 3/21 - 3/26. The Swanson School of Engineering March annual tradition continues! This year’s theme is Pixar and it is going to be amazing! Will
ECE defend their title? Who knows? Support your department! It will definitely
be a blast!

Adopt-a-Block — ESC will be having 2 Adopt-a-Block events this month on
3/19 and 3/26 both from 12 – 2 p.m. If you’re interested in cleaning up a few
streets in South O, meet at Antoon’s.

Previous Event Highlight
Date Auction
On February 10th, ESC held the annual pre E-Week tradition of Date Auction, just in time for Valentine’s Day! Dan
Bednarczyk did an amazing job as host and ESC raised
over $1400 for the American Cancer Society! Also, Date
Auction history was made when Kat Zougari went for
$301!!!

Chevron is a Platinum level
sponsor of ESC. This corporation offers a wide
range of energy-related
products including petroleum, lubricants, plastics,
and oils. Chevron offers
jobs here and abroad that
are of special interest to
chemical (especially petroleum), civil, electrical, and
mechanical
engineering
majors--go look them up to

Dinner with Professors: we had another successful Dinner
with Professors. Many professors attended for the first time and
the student found it very helpful to both get an understanding of
the curriculum aead of them but also but gained some valuable
career insights.
Elementary Engineering Extravaganza: in a partnership with
SWE, BMES presented at a table at the E3 event where we
were able to share the wonders of engineering with young elementary school students and inspire them towards pursuing engineering as a career.
Industry Visits to HERL/Pitt Med: we hosted two successful
professional development visits this past month. Students got to
hear from a panel of medical student who all had engineering
backgrounds as well as witness some of the exciting research
being conducted at the Human Engineering Research Laboratory.
Elections: with the transition into the new year, we are having a round of board elections to choose who will lead BMES in
the 2016-17 academic year. Members can announce their intent
to run on March 2nd, with elections happening on March 16th.

On Tuesday, February 17th, the University of Pittsburgh's
Society of Petroleum Engineers hosted Oil & Gas: Where
do we go from here?, an informational event focused on
the recent economic downturn and how current students
can prepare themselves for the road ahead. Local industry
professionals gave their best advice and answered students' questions in a Q&A panel. The event would not have
been possible without a generous financial contributions
from Universal Well Services and Halliburton, as well as
the time of all those who volunteered on the Q&A panel.

Pitt SASE will be having its next two GBMs on March
14th (Pi Day celebration!) and March 28th in Benedum
G28 from 7-8PM. As always, there will be free pizza and
drinks! Also, keep an eye out for another one of our delicious bubble tea fundraisers, coming soon! For updates,
join our Facebook group (Pitt SASE), and don't forget to
add us on our new Snapchat account (pittsase)! Stay
warm and good luck on your midterms!

The University of Pittsburgh Student Section of the American Nuclear Society is a professional society on campus.
Our members are presented with unique opportunities that
enrich their understanding of nuclear science and technology, enhance their soft and technical skills in a professional engineering setting, and encourage networking with local nuclear engineers. Come join us for our next General
Business Meeting in Benedum 158 on March 30th at 8:45
PM. If you would like to be put on our mailing list and hear
about all the opportunities that Pitt ANS has to offer,
please email us at ans.pitt@gmail.com.

Relay for Life Pizza Party
On February 26, 2016, Rachel Tuite and I, Katelyn McEneaney, invited friends
and colleagues to our home to celebrate life over a pizza party. I, a member of
Phi Sigma Rho, the engineering sorority, and Rachel, a member of Theta Tau,
the co-ed engineering fraternity, decided to host a joint fundraiser which benefited both of our Relay For Life teams.
Relay For Life is a 24-hour event in which communities gather to honor cancer
survivors, remember lost loved ones, and fight back against a disease that has
already taken too much. Together, our goal is to do everything in our power to
raise money for our Relay teams. The Pizza Party was the first step.
In order to have a successful fundraiser, we reached out to local pizzerias in
Oakland and asked for donations of pizzas and supplies. We were more than
pleased with the outcome. We cannot express our gratitude enough for the 20
donated pizzas that we received. Without the donations from Original Milano Pizza, Sorento’s Pizzeria, Antoon’s Pizza, Larry & Carol’s Pizza, and Forbes Gyro,
we could not have made the Pizza Party happen. We raised $440 from the Pizza
Party event.
Rachel and I want to thank everyone that participated and donated to our event.
We all did a great thing.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Pittsburgh event will take place on
April 16, 2016.

Thank you,
Katelyn
McEneaney
