Iteffectsitalotbecauseweallneedtobethesamespeedsonooneisbehindandyoucan't
justhaveonegoodplayeroutthere.Itisdefinitelyateameffortnoonewouldbeabletoplay
thegamebythemselves.Youneedtoworkasagroupyouneedtohavegoodchemistryand
communication.

Analyze
Afterwatching3differentgamesandinterviewingAndrew,anindividualwhowasbeen
playinghockeysinceayoungage,Ihavelearnedtheoddsareagainstmyhypothesisaboutthe5
holeshot.The5holeshotistheshotispuckthroughthegoalieslegs.Theshotisverydifficult
toachievebecauseoftheSmallarea(Miller)youareworkingwithtoscore.However,whenI
wasobservingmy3NHLHurricanesgames,whentheyshot5holeontheopposinggoalie,they
scored50%ofthetime.Ibelieveitisa50/50chancewhenaplayershoots5holeonthe
opposinggoalie.Ialsolearnedplayinghockeyinvolvesnotonlyskill,butluck.Anindividual
musthaveanopportunitytoshotongoalthatismadebytheirlinemates,theopposingteams
defensivemenandgoalie.Whentheopposingdefenseisntdoingwell,itiseasiertoscoreonthe
goaliebecauseitisalluptohimtoblocktheshot.Thatiswhymostsaybeinggoalieisoneof
themoredifficultpositioninnotonlyhockey,butwithinanysport.Withthisbeingsaid,the
mostcommonshottotakeistopshelf,youhavea60/40chancewithscoringbythatmove.
Millerranked5holeasoneofthemostdifficultshotstotakeandmostprefernottomakethe
shotingeneral.But,afterwatchingtheHurricanesgames,outoftheshotstheymade,3045%of
theshotswere5holes,and40=50%ofthetime,itmadeitin.Inconclusion,Ibelieveditwasone
oftheeasiestshotstomake,butitisoneofthemostdifficult,butwhentheopportunitytoscore
a5holeoccurs,thereisa50/50chancethatitwillgoin.

RulesandConventions
Thegameofhockeyisaveryphysical.Thereisanabundanceofchecking,hitting,fights,
hooking,etc.Althoughthisoneofthemainreasonsindividualslovethesport,fortheaction,for
theviolenceofthegame,thatlovedoescomewithconsequencesThepenaltyaplayergetsfor
misconductvaries.Forexample,ifaplayerfights,theirpenalty,resultsin5minutesinthe
penaltybox.Hencethesayingfiveforfighting.Theplayersmisconductcontinues,theycould
evengetevictedfromthegame,orifanotherplayerreceivesinjuryfromahit,theperpetrator
canbefinedbytheNHLandsuspendedfromplaying.Forexample,thefightingpenalties:
1. Fighting
Afightshallbedeemedtohaveoccurredwhenatleastoneplayer
punchesorattemptstopunchanopponentrepeatedlyorwhentwoplayerswrestle
insuchamannerastomakeitdifficultfortheLinesmentointerveneandseparate
thecombatants.
2. Aggressor
Theaggressorinanaltercationshallbetheplayerwhocontinuesto
throwpunchesinanattempttoinflictpunishmentonhisopponentwhoisina
defenselesspositionorwhoisanunwillingcombatant.Thewonwhowonthe
fight.Aplayerwhoisdeemedtobetheaggressorofanaltercationwillhavethis
recordedasanaggressorofanaltercationforstatisticalandsuspensionpurposes.
Aplayerwhoisdeemedtobeboththeinstigatorandaggressorofanaltercation
shallbeassessedaninstigatingminorpenalty,amajorpenaltyforfighting,a
tenminutemisconduct(instigator)andagamemisconductpenalty(aggressor).
3. Instigator
Aninstigatorofanaltercationshallbeaplayerwhobyhisactionsor

demeanordemonstratesany/someofthefollowingcriteria:distancetraveled
glovesofffirstfirstpunchthrownmenacingattitudeorpostureverbal
instigationorthreatsconductinretaliationtoapriorgame(orseason)incident
obviousretributionforapreviousincidentinthegameorseason.Aplayerwhois
deemedtobetheinstigatorofanaltercationshallbeassessedaninstigatingminor
penalty,amajorpenaltyforfightingandatenminutemisconduct.
4. FinesandSuspensions(Aggressor)
Aplayerwhoisdeemedtobethe

aggressorforthethirdtimeinoneRegularseasonshallbesuspendedforthenext
tworegularseasongamesofhisteam.Forthefourthaggressorpenaltyinthe
sameRegularseason,theplayerwillbesuspendedforthenextfourgamesofhis

team.ForthefifthaggressorpenaltyinthesameRegularseason,theplayerwill
besuspendedforthenextsixgamesofhisteam.
5. FinesandSuspensions(Instigator)
Aplayerwhoisdeemedtobetheinstigator

ofanaltercationforthethirdtimeinoneRegularseasonshallbesuspendedfor
thenexttworegularseasongamesofhisteam.Forthefourthinstigatorpenaltyin
thesameRegularseason,theplayerwillbesuspendedforthenextfourgamesof
histeam.ForthefifthinstigatorpenaltyinthesameRegularseason,theplayer
willbesuspendedforthenextsixgamesofhisteam.

Purpose
Inevitability,sincehockeywascreatedandplayed,therehasbeenmanydifferentshots
thatmakebeencreated,aswellasmanydifferentwaystoshot.But,throughouttheyears,some
shotshavestayedthesame.Suchasthefiveholeshot.Oneofthemostchallengingshotsany
playercanmake.Witheveryplay,welearnhowdifficult,inreality,thisshotreallyis.Ifthe
timingiswrong,itwillnotmakeitin.But,ifthegoaliemovesjustaninchorevengets
distractedjustfortherightamountoftime,theshotcanbemade,andtheshotcanmakeagoal.
Withbeingoneofthefirstshotscreated,itwillforeverholditsplaceinthehistoryofthesport
itself.
