Project Charter - Katherine Hashimoto (3/01 Draft In Progress

)
Specifications

Element

Incorporate Universal Design practices into Modular Learning Assets (MLA)
to allow accessibility for all learners.
Document MLA design process to inform timeline and guidelines for future,
efficient creation of accessible MLAs.

Mission

(Include statement about including user feedback.)
Support Harvard Graduate School of Education’s ongoing efforts to provide
accessible online learning opportunities. (newer online learning models)
Inform organizations
[Provide accessible, affordable, online experiences in the field to engage
with HGSE faculty research and expand to the larger community.)
Teaching & Learning Lab
Bill Wisser, Bonnie Anderson, Andrea Flores, & Joanna Huang
o Bi-weekly meetings (Strand Meeting/Group
Meeting)
o Email, Skype, in-Person, shared documents

Stakeholders

All learners participating in MLAs
o Research & implement best practices
o Examination of MLA evaluations
MLA Presenters
o

Preserving intent of the content of MLA

In Scope
Project will analyze an existing MLA for
UDL best practices and suggesting
changes.

Out of Scope
Asking past presenters to re-film
any sections.
Non-Canvas platforms.

Accessibility checklist for Tom Hehir
MLA (March 21)

Project Scope

Documentation and guidelines can help
inform future MLA creation.
Process flow for user testing. First run is
March 21. (User testing begins with Tom
Hehir’s MLA - Formative evaluation with
members of the community with low
vision, hearing, and/or mobility(?))

Project Constraints

My personal knowledge of UDL is still growing.
There is a lot of information I want to implement well. Reviewing resources
thoughtfully takes time. (Constraints on authorization / privacy of users.)

Timelines
For Hehir’s and future MLAs there is a time restriction for design &
production. I also have the constraint of this semester’s timeline.
Communication and meeting regularly with project managers can help
keep project on track.
Materials
Footage and materials from past speakers is difficult / not possible to
change. The documentation and checklists can ask designers and speakers
to cover materials to ensure they are accessible.

Objectives
Specifically, what are we going
to do and deliver?
● What are our
improvement objectives and
targets?
● How will success be
measured?
● What specific

That it is possible to create an accessible site without speaking to those
affected, specifically learners who have low vision, hearing, and/or
mobility.
If project is unsuccessful, MLAs will not feel supportive to all audiences.
Harvard and MIT came under scrutiny for not providing accessible
materials in all of their online courses.

Risks/Contingencies

More specifically, Tom Hehir’s MLA addresses how to create inclusive
materials and communities. It would be inappropriate to have an
inaccessible platform to deliver this message.
Researching best practices and creating checklists for MLAs to check for
accessibility can reduce this risk.
