PRLS 340: Public Relations Speech Writing and Delivery

Persuasive Speech Outline
11/19/15
Specific Purpose: To make the audience more aware of human
trafficking.
Thesis Statement: In todays world we often think slavery ended years
ago. But in reality its happening today in our own city in the form of
human trafficking.
Introduction
I. Attention-getting material: When you think of America whats
one of the first things you think about? Freedom? Thats what I
think about. And this is what I believed until I learned the sad
truth that slavery is still happening in this country, even in our
own city.
II.
Establish Credibility: Human trafficking is a form of modern
slavery that denies freedom to 20.9 million people around the
world, and no matter where you are, chances are its happening
near you.
III. Preview/thematic Statement: Today I am going to be informing
you all about the heartbreaking truths about modern slavery, and
tell you how you can get involved to join the fight to stop it.
[Transition: I am going to begin by informing you all about the
different types and victims of human trafficking.]
Body
I. One of the major forms of human trafficking is sex trafficking.
A. Sex traffickers use violence, threats, lies to draw their
victims in and compel adults and children to engage in
commercial sex acts against their will.
B. The situations that sex trafficking victims experience vary
dramatically, but often the traffickers identify where the
victim is vulnerable and uses those weaknesses as
leverage in order to create a dependency.
C. 98% of the targeted victims of sex trafficking are women
and girls, which are typically populations of runaway and
homeless youth, as well as victims of domestic violence,
sexual assault, war, or social discrimination.
D. Shockingly, sex trafficking makes $99 billion in illegal
profits, which is the reason for its continued growth.
[Transition: Sex trafficking is typically the most publicized form
of modern-day slavery but its not the most common form.]
II.
The most common form is labor trafficking.

Labor traffickers lure victims into horrendous working

conditions through false promises of a high-paying job or
exciting education or travel opportunities.
B. The employers exert so much physical or psychological
control over their victims, through physical abuse, debt
bondages, confiscation of passports or money, that the
victim believes that have no choice but to keep working for
the employer.
C. Common types of labor trafficking in the United States
consist of people forced to work in homes as domestic
servants, farmworkers coerced through violence as they
harvest crops, or factory workers held in inhumane
conditions.
D. Similar to sex trafficking, vulnerable populations are
typically targeted by traffickers, some of these
vulnerabilities include immigration status, recruitment
debt, isolation, poverty, and a lack of strong labor
protections
[Transition: This cause really hit home for me, literally, when I
learned that this was happening in our own city, the place I
have called home my whole life and had no idea.]
Human trafficking takes so many forms and has so many
different victims that it is going on in all 50 states, even in our
own city.
A. Last year two people were arrested in North Spokane for
forcing a 16-year old girl into prostitution.
B. A neighbor two doors down was interviewed about the
incident saying that he generally feels safe living in his
neighborhood, indicating that he was unaware of this even
going on.
C. The Director of World Relief Spokane, an organization
dedicated to helping the vulnerable, Mark Kadel spoke
about human trafficking in our region.
D. He said that "Law enforcement has talked about a ring that
goes between Seattle, Spokane and Portland," but its hard
to quantify the number of victims in our region because it
goes on in the shadows and behind closed doors.
[Transition: Now after hearing all this you may be thinking,
well what can I do about this? Or what is already being done
to stop this?
There are numerous organizations that are taking action against
this monstrous crime.
A. There are some popular organizations that you may have
heard of such as Not for Sale, or Polaris Project.
A.

III.

IV.

V.

I.
II.

B. The Polaris Project is a non-profit organization in

Washington DC dedicated to eradicating modern slavery in
the US.
C. They have tackled this mission by creating a Theory for
Change
D. The first part of the three-part model is 1. Respond to
victims effectively and immediately,
E. 2. Equip key stakeholders to address and prevent human
trafficking.
F. And finally 3. Disrupt the business of human trafficking
through targeted campaigns.
G. They also have hotlines for victims or witnesses to text or
call.
H. If you want to get involved personally they have many
different options available for you.
I. Visit their website at www.projectpolaris.org.
[Transition: There are things in our own city that you can get
involved with as well.
Organizations such as Generation Alive are actively fighting
human trafficking in the Spokane area and educating youth
about its effects.
A. They offer opportunities in which you can become an
educator, volunteer, or donate money.
B. Theyre actually looking for interns from Gonzaga at the
moment.
C. If you want to learn more visit their website at
www.generationalive.com
D. Another way you can get involved in making a change is to
encourage people to talk about human trafficking, and
think about the source of the problem.
E. Human trafficking would not exist today if there were not
such a high demand for sex slaves and forced employment.
F. The more awareness there is, and the more people talk
about what it is and what needs to be done to stop it, the
closer we will get to living in a truly free country.
[Transition: In closing, I hope this information has informed
you more about this sickening crime.]
Summary Statement: Human trafficking is one of the many
causes in our world that has become so vast and popular that
ending it will take time and dedication.
Concluding Remarks: But simply raising awareness by starting
conversations, helping victims and being an activist for freedom,
it will bring us closer to ending this crime in our city, country and
world.
