Package Contents 2. Connecting the power
Before using your Joybook R23 for the first time, please check if you have all the
items with you. For details about what should be included in the package, refer to
the package contents label on the accessory box. If any of the items are missing or
appear to be damaged, contact your dealer. Save the packaging in case you need to
ship your Joybook for service.

Getting Your Joybook Ready for Use


1. Installing the battery

• Connect the power cord to the power adapter.

Turn your Joybook upside down and put it on a soft clean cloth. With the label

To open your Joybook, slide the latch to the right, and then lift the lid up.
4. Performing initial setup

Press the power button to start up your Joybook, and then follow the onscreen
instructions to complete the initial Windows XP setup.

Expanding the Capabilities of Your Joybook

Turns Joybook on or off.

O Keyboard
Allows you to input data as well as access various special functions.

P Touch Pad
You can use the touch pad to conveniently con-
trol the cursor on the screen.
• To move the cursor, gently move your finger
on the touch pad. The cursor will move
accordingly.
• Tap on the touch pad once to execute the
same action as clicking on the left button of a
mouse.

Indicator Lights
Optical Drive Activity Indicator
Flashes green when Joybook is accessing data on the disc in the DVD-Combo/
DVD-Dual drive.
Hard Disk Drive Activity Indicator
Flashes green when Joybook is accessing data in the hard disk drive.
Num Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Num Lock function is activated (refer to "Function
Hotkeys" on page 11 for details).
Caps Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Caps Lock function is activated (refer to "Function
Hotkeys" on page 11 for details).
Scroll Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Scroll Lock function is activated (refer to "Function
Hotkeys" on page 11 for details).
AC Power Indicator
• Lights up in green when the computer is using AC power.
• Flashes green when the computer, using AC power, is in Standby mode.

Supports multi-functional optical module for reading music CDs, VCDs and DVDs or burning CD-R/CD-RW or DVD+R/
DVD-R/DVD+RW/DVD-RW discs. The disc tray can be opened by pressing the small ejection button on the drive.

If you wish to open the disc tray when your Joybook power is off, or it
can't be opened using the ejection button, insert a pointed object into
the tray ejection hole next to the ejection button to force open the disc
tray.

You can install a cable lock to this hole to prevent theft.
Battery Charge Indicator
• Lights up in green when the battery is fully charged and connected to AC power.
• Lights up in amber when the battery is being charged.
• Flashes red when the battery is almost completely discharged.

• Lights up in green when the computer is using battery power.
• Flashes green when the computer, using battery power, is in Standby mode.

Function Hotkeys
The Fn key located at the lower left corner of the keyboard is used with another key to perform the alternative function of a key. The letter "Fn" and the alternative functions
are identified by the color of gray on the keytop. To perform a desired function, first press and hold Fn, then press the other key. For example, to decrease speaker volume,
press and hold the Fn key, and then press the F3 key.
Depending on the area where your Joybook is purchased, the keyboard may be different from that shown in this section.

Converting CD Music into MP3 Format


1. Insert a music CD into the optical drive of your Joybook.
2. The songs on the music CD will automatically appear on the Song List. Click to
select the songs you wish to convert, or uncheck the unwanted ones.

3. Click the button. A new playlist named New Album will automatically be
created on the Media Panel below Music Library, and QMusic will start the con-
version process. Depending on the number of songs you selected, this process
may take a while.
4. When the conversion process is completed, you will see the converted songs on
the Song List. To change the name of the playlist, right-click on it and select
Change Playlist Name.
Creating an MP3 Music CD
A CD-burner is required for creating an MP3 music CD.
1. Make sure that the CD-burner is ready and there is a blank recordable disc in
the burner.
2. Right-click a playlist under Music Library and select Burn MP3 data disc.

Playing Media Files


The simplest way to play media files is to drag and drop a file directly onto the
PowerDVD control panel or movie window. This includes all media file types that
are supported by PowerDVD and playlist formats (.m3u and .pls).
1. Open PowerDVD and open the Windows Explorer (or any folder).
2. Browse to find the file you wish to play, click it, drag it over to the PowerDVD
control panel or movie window, and then drop it.
3. PowerDVD will begin playback.
Playing Audio CDs
1. Open PowerDVD, insert the Audio CD you wish to play and click the Play but-
ton.
2. To change your Audio CD playlist, click the Menu button during playback or
during pause mode. By default, your playlist will duplicate all the tracks avail-
able on your Audio CD from the left window. Click Clear to clear your playlist
or Reset to return to the default setting.
3. Select tracks and click Add to add to your Playlist. For selecting multiple tracks,
press the <Ctrl> key when selecting or press the <Shift> key to select tracks in a
row.

Your Joybook comes with an anti-virus software CD, and be sure to install the
anti-virus software from the disc supplied. Doing so helps you to avoid unex-
pected destruction of your precious data in Joybook and keeps your privacy
against any unauthorized access from other computers.
However, we would still recommend that you back up your data regularly on CDs,
DVDs or other storage media, since the anti-virus software may not be able to
intercept all existing and new viruses, which may lead to destruction of all or some
of your data in the Joybook.

wireless LAN is On, the icon will be displayed at the lower right corner of
the Desktop.
3. Double-click the icon on Windows Taskbar.
4. In the window that follows, click Change advanced settings...

6. Enter the SSID and network key provided by the network administrator or
those specified by the documentation of your access point, and then click OK.

When Joybook is connected to a wireless network, the signal strength and connec-

You can replace the existing memory module with a higher-capacity one. Before
you upgrade or replace memory, please check on the BenQ web site to deter-
