these learning styles.

comfortable learning environment.
9. I believe that the best teacher is one who is enthusiastic and passionate about teaching.

learning.

Classroom and Learning Management

Parental Involvement:
For parents who are interested, I will be sending home an introduction letter on day one of my
placement which will give parents the opportunity to provide me with their email address, and join my
personal Remind for the class. I will be sending weekly email updates on class activities and subject
matter covered. In order to protect the privacy of students and their families, I will send emails through
the use of Teacher Logic. Parents that do not wish to join the email list will be strongly encouraged to
join Remind as it is a great way to ensure students are aware of upcoming assignments and events.
For issues involving student behaviour, I will use personal phone calls to discuss the issue.
Parents and students will also be encouraged to meet with me after school hours to discuss ongoing
issues or concerns at their leisure.
Phone calls will also act as positive reinforcement. Students who exhibit constant positivity, and
contribute amazingly to the classroom environment should have their behaviour acknowledged, and a
personal phone call home to parents to recognize achievement. I will also make a personal phone call to
the parents of the student of the week in each class. More on that process below.
In accordance with the regulations set out by GYPSD and the NCS handbook, parents will be
encouraged to volunteer for larger activities and class field trips.
Seating arrangement:
Seating arrangements do not need to be concrete from day one. I will begin my term by having
students sit in even designated rows. This will simply be to see the extent to which I am able to keep
student attention, and how much students respond to the distractions of those around them. If a seating
plan is needed to prevent further distraction, this will be done as soon as I have assessed where each
student should sit to benefit most from learning.
I also believe that some of the best learning can occur collaboratively, but only if there is a
positive classroom environment where there exists mutual respect between students and the teacher.
Students must have an understanding that collaboration is sometimes essential to achieving a common
goal, and that working with others is an opportunity to expand learning. If this kind of environment is
created successfully, then I would like to rearrange the desks into groups in order to open up more
possibilities to have students work collaboratively to achieve learning objectives.
A third option that exists is to have students rearrange the desks into a U-shape, with an open
center of the room. This provides an opportunity to see each student and have any presenting individual
at the center of the room. This format would be great for lectures, class presentations, films, and other
such learning opportunities.
Creating a positive learning environment:
Current research strongly suggests that students respond directly to the type of learning
environment that is created from day one. Students also do not respond well to teachers that they do not
like, or do not show them the respect that they deserve. It is essential for me to begin my internship with
a smile and explain immediately that I am passionate about teaching, that I enjoy spending my day with
students, and that I have nothing but respect for them and their learning process. It is also important for

me to let the students know that their safety and comfort is important to me. Providing students with the
insight into my desires for learning and how I feel about teaching will allow me be more critical of
misbehavior and disrespect, as I will make it clear that I will never show any intentional disrespect to
my students. Every morning, I will make an effort to greet students at the door, and ask them how they
are.
I have just outlined the teacher/student aspect of creating a positive learning environment. It is
also critical that from day one, I make it clear that any blatant disrespect, bullying, harassment, or
intolerance will not be tolerated towards anyone. The punishment for such conduct will take place in a
three step phase outlined below. I will also provide students with an opportunity to share that makes
them unique and encourage students to recognize that differences are inherent and should be embraced.
All students offer something positive to the learning environment.
Positive reinforcement:
As a teacher, it is important for me to be able to recognize that any positive contribution to the
classroom environment, be it from classroom discussion, maintenance, or other assistance, cannot go
unnoticed. Students must always be verbally acknowledged for such actions. Constant positivity and
productivity will also be rewarded with learning opportunities that are less heavy (such as movies, fun
computer activities). However, all such activities will be aligned with the curriculum in all subjects.
Every week, all students will also be considered for Mr. Beckers Student of the Week Award.
This award features a certificate and small treat and will be distributed to students who are deemed to
be:
1. Positive leaders in the classroom.
2. Friendly to all peers and those in need.
3. Punctual.
4. Productive
5. Insightful.
6. Overall engaged, positive, and productive classroom citizens.
Classroom rules:
1. Be respectful to Mr. Becker and fellow students
2. No bullying
3. Dont be late.
4. Be prepared for class
5. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself
6. Listen when others are speaking
7. Please raise your hand to ask a question
8. Follow instructions
9. Show respect for school property
10. No cellphones
Consequences for late assignments:
1. Student will be asked why their assignment is late. Depending on the reason given by the student, a

small extension may be granted. If the reason is not satisfactory, step two will occur.
2. Student will be asked to come into Mr. Beckers classroom at lunch and will complete the assignment
at that time.
3. If student is missing lunch times and have consistent late assignments, a phone call will be made to
parents regarding the issue. If necessary, a meeting will be called to discuss solutions to the issue.
4. Assignments that are not completed by the end of the unit will be given a grade of NHI
Consequences for misbehavior or disrespect to classmates:
1. Warning Asking students about the issue and informing the student that what they have done will
not be tolerated, and inform of second step of the process (applicable in most cases).
2. Lost lunch time This will not be spent simply in the classroom. Students may be asked to write an
apology letter, assist custodians (if needed), or assist teachers in need of help.
3. If the issue persists parents will be called, and a meeting about the issue will be scheduled if needed.
NOTE: If issues are serious, such as in the cases of fights, vandalism, etc, the student will be sent to talk
with administration immediately.
