Collector's Cabinet
This hard lnaple cabinet is built with two different types
of miter joints - an end miter and a face miter. Then
s/)lines are added w align and strengthen the joints.

lnlOSl everyone I know has a collec-

tion of somethinz - figurine,. "mall

toys, or items thai simply bring back (and
memories. So J decided to make a special
cabinet to hold a fewof'these items.
This cabinet is made of three compenents;
the case.the dividers. and the doors.
TIlE CASE.There's IImhill!! complicated
about building the case - irs bask-ally a
shallow box with mitered comers. To help
align these corners and make them
stronger. I cut kerfs in the ends and joined
them together with hardwood Splines.
To mount the case

10

the wall. I used a

hidden hanging system. This two-part system ismadeupofa hangerstrip.tharsglul'd

10 the

TILEDMllERS. The secondpan uribe cabinet, the dividers. is the most challenging.
TIle problem is collections change over
Lime.and require different divider locations.
To solve the problem. the dividers are not
glued in place. but are held by a "friction fit"

in shallow dadoes. This altows the pieces 10

be removed and then dadoed ifyou wish !O
add more dividers, Or insert new pieces
without dadoes if you want ft'Wt'rdividers.
TIlE I>OONS. Th(" third pari of this cabinet

Is the doors. Here again I used splines to

align and strengthen Ute mitered corners.
However. the technique (orcuning the kerfs
to accept the splines is sligh~y different.
refer ro the Box on page 23.
'IATt:RIAIS. To keep the items from I!et
ting lost in the shadows. J wanted a lighl
background. So I built this cabinet and

back o( the cabinet aod a cleat that's

screwed to the wall. These pieces interlock
10 hold the case securely to the wall and are
completely bidden. see Cross Section in the dividers out of hard maple and the back
