Fencing
While in Madrid, Rizal practiced fencing and
pistol shooting.
Rizal became master of the foil, saber and
dueling sword, and acquired a legendary
reputation for grace and technique.
Rizals mastery of sword and as a marksman was
put to the test when he challenged Antonio
Luna on a duel.

"My hands are shaking because I have just had a

fencing bout; you know I want to be a
swordsman." Jose Rizal, age 18, to Enrique Lete,
November 27, 1879.

Chess
He played chess and bear several Germans and
European friends and acquaintances.
In 1877, soon after first meeting Segunda
Katigbak, he played parlor or azotea chess
somewhere in Trozo. His play was bad he had
just learned the guy with Segunda was her
fianc; he had been asked to do a sketch of her
because his talent for drawing was well known,
but the sketch he came up with was wretched;
every time she glanced at him he would blush
and he lost the game.

Rizals Chess Set

Marksman
Rizal was an ardent pistol shooter, a passion he shared with the German frat
men. In fact Rizals friend and companion Jose Alejandrino called it an
addiction.
Rizal's guns, "the smith" and Wesson number 3 revolver, or popularly known as
the Magnificent, can be found at the AFP Museum at Camp Aguinaldo in
Quezon City.
Rizal made this assessment of his skill: Shooting slow fire at 25 meters, cocking
for each shot and firing one-handed in the traditional duelists stance, he
reported he could place 20 consecutive shots into 20 cm, roughly 8 inches
square. This is very good shooting, especially since we do not know the gun
Rizal used, the caliber nor make. As reference, the black 10-point bulls-eye of
the official American slow fire pistol target, shot at 25 yards, is 5 _ inches. At the
highest skill levels this target is shot with customized pistols with adjustable sights.

Judo
Rizal was the first Southeast Asian ever to master the art of japanese sport.
He even put up some GYMs in the cities of Calamba and Dapitan, which became the start
of various judo grassroots there.
This is the reason why up to this day, youth from Zamboanga, especially those from Dapitan,
continued to be source of top-caliber judokas, who earned slots in the national teams.

Music
According to Mrs. Asuncion Bantug, Rizals grandniece, among the arts, music was Rizals
first love.
However, music did not come easily to him. His contemporary, Dr. Galicano Apacible,
recalled that He even found it hard to hum or whistle a simple melody. Whenever he did it,
the melody turned out to be so out of tune. But determined to excel in music, Rizal studied
how to play the flute and practiced hard. He also took up solfeggio, piano, and voice
culture.
Rizal was not deemed as an excellent flutist or singer but he went on with his musical
inclinations by composing his own songs. Most of the songs were his poems that were set to
music. His popular novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo also contained several
passages and references concerning music.
