Procedure:
1. Priortothislessonwehavetalkedaboutwhataprivatevs.publicserviceis.Tostartoff
wewilldiscussthatagainandgooverwhatwelearnedyesterday.
2. Iwillletstudentsknowthattodaywewillbelearningaboutfourdifferentpublicservices
anditstheirjobtodecidewhattheythinkisthemostimportanttohaveinour
community.Thefourserviceswillbe:police,firefighters,publicschool,andhealthcare
services.
3. Wewillreadthedifferentsectionsofeachserviceasawholeclass.Thesereadingswill
beprojectedontotheboardandbeinteractivefromtheTCIwebsite.Studentswill
popcorneachotherandIwillaskquestionsthroughoutthereadingsandguidestudents.
Wewillmakesuretostopandmakeanyconnectionsorpersonalexperiencesthat
studentscanshareout.
4. AfterwehavefinishedreadingallfoursectionsoftheservicesIwillpresentthefour
differentservicesondifferentsidesoftheroom.Forexample,policewillbeonthesouth
side,healthcareonthenorth,ect.Iwillaskthestudentstochoosewhichservicethey

feelisthemostimportantforourcommunityandwalktothatsideoftheroom.The
studentsthenwillhave10minutestoworkasagroupandanswerthefollowing
questions.Onlyonepersonwillhavetowritedowntheiranswers(itcanbeinbullet
pointsornotesform).

5. Afterstudentshavewrittendowntheirreasonsandevidencewewillhaveaformal
debate.Iwillgoovertherulesandrespectwhenhavingadebateandhoweveryones
voiceisimportantandequal.
6. Duringourdebatestudentswillbeallowedtoswitchsides/servicesifanothergroup
changestheirmind.
7. FortheirfinaltaskIwillaskstudentstowritedown3newthingstheylearnedabouta
service,2thingtheyalreadyknew,and1thingyouwantedtosaybutdidnt.Thiswillbe
theirexitsliptoheadtolunch.
