HELMEPA's study on Marine Litter in the Mediterranean presented at IMO

At the recent 60th Session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the
International Maritime Organization - IMO in London, HELMEPA, as member of the Greek
Delegation, presented to the Plenary the findings of a study on marine litter in the water and coasts of
the Mediterranean Sea. Member-vessels of HELMEPA transiting the Mediterranean Sea participated
voluntarily in the research and reported the presence of bulky waste items on sea surface.

The presentation took place under MEPC Agenda Item "Interpretations of, and amendments to,
MARPOL and related instruments".

The Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Andreas Chrisostomou, thanked Greece and requested the
study to be forwarded to the IMO Correspondence Group for the Review of MARPOL Annex V.

Parts of the study have already been included in UNEP’s Report titled "Marine Litter: A Global
Challenge", available in the link: http://www.unep.org/pdf/UNEP_Marine_Litter-
