Experiment 2: Walking water
Background: Plants draw water up from their roots by capillary action. In this experiment, we will use paper towels to
demonstrate “water walking” in the same way plants pull water up from the ground.
Supplies:
*6 Wide Mouth Mason Jars
*6 Paper Towels
*Water
*Yellow, Red, and Blue Food Coloring
Procedure: Set you glasses up in a circle as shown in the photo below. Fill every other jar halfway with water. Add food
coloring to dye one jar of water red, one yellow, and one blue. Roll each paper towel and drape them between the jars
as shown.

Hypothesis: What do you think will happen to empty jars?
