Abigail’s Consequences
Anybody who has ever lived has had to make choices. Whether the choices are positive
or negative there are consequences that come along with making a choice. These consequences
are something that people have to live with for the rest of their lives. While making choices
people should think of the consequences of their actions because it is always easy to make the
bad choice, but dealing with the consequences is the hard part. When somebody becomes angry
they could make the choice to take revenge, or leave it alone. Most in their anger make the
irrational decision to take revenge not thinking about the fact that they will have to deal with the
consequences later on. After the person realizes what they have done they usually regret what
they did, but others never learn the feeling of regret. Abigail Williams was never taught by
anybody the consequences of choices and regret. In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller,
Abigail Williams is a victim of her own choices.
Abigail made some bad choices in the past or because of events that happened in the past
making her a victim of all those choices she made. When Abigail was still a young child she
watched as both of her parents were murdered. This left her scarred for the rest of her life,
Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will
come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that
will shudder you. And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ heads
on the pillow next to mine, and I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can
make you wish you had never seen the sun go down! (Miller 19)

difficulty concentrating. According to an article some characteristics of PTSD are irritability or outbursts of anger. This disease effects people that have witnessed a horrifying event that scarred them. but instead she got a relationship that ended up persuading her further to get her revenge. At any point the town could have stopped her and realized that she needed serious help instead of .Orlando 2 Because Abigail was left to deal with the after effects of that event she could possibly have a disease known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Since John showed interest in her she found that love in him but in the wrong way. All of these characteristics can be found in Abigail showing that she could possibly have this disease. and you loved me then and you do now! (Miller 21) Abigail was without love her whole life she watched her parents die and then was put into a household where nobody cared about her making her ache for the feeling of love. Although all of this was not her fault Abigail does not deserve to be pardoned. There have been plenty of people who also have PTSD. I saw your face when she put me out. hypervigilance. you cannot pretend it were you. In addition. Although she could have this disease it was her choice to start the witch trials and take her revenge. exaggerated startled response. detachment or estrangement feelings. Abigail was under the illusion that John Proctor loved her as much as she loved him which was not the case leaving Abigail again feeling unwanted. Abigail needed fatherly love to help guide her in the right path. when Abigail was a servant in the Proctor household she chose to have an affair with John Proctor when she was aware he had a wife whom she also worked for. but they have not tried to kill an entire town unlike Abigail who purposefully made sure that all the people she did not like either died or were put in jail for the rest of their lives. It made her want to seek revenge on him and his family leading her to do crazy things just to get that one task done. and physiological reactivity to cues (Bison). While talking to John in Betty’s room she states I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near! Or did I dam that? It’s she put me out.

And he goes to save her. She knows that the judges will believe them because they are good. he says. and. She did this by sticking a needle in her stomach the same day that Mary Warren was giving Elizabeth a poppet with a needle also stuck into it making it seem like Elizabeth was performing voodoo magic. innocent puritans that could not possibly lie since lying is a sin. She is enraptured.Orlando 3 just going with what she said because they were so ignorant to the fact that she could have been lying. Like a struck beast. the Williams girl. First. she – to Proctor now – testify it were your wife’s familiar spirit pushed it in. She sat to dinner in Reverend Parris’s house tonight. (Miller 71) . And demandin’ of her how she come to be so stabbed. and without word nor warnin’ she falls to the floor. startled. Likewise. and screamed a scream that a bull would weep to hear. Abigail also made the decision to blame Elizabeth Proctor as a witch. I saw him. The girl. but as the witch trials go on her and the other girls make the choice to keep pretending like they are being possessed by the people on trial to make it seem like they are witches. Abigail chooses to start the Salem Witch Trials by pretending that she is possessed by witches and in order to free herself from the grasps of the devil she has to state the names of the other witches. It was her choice to continue with the proceedings. but she made the decision to continue with them until she get revenge on every single person that ever wronged her making her a truly scary villain. Abigail Williams. I go back to Jesus. he draw a needle out. stuck two inches in the flesh of her belly. sir. Abigail could have stopped the trials. I kiss His hand. as though in a pearly light. I want to open myself! They turn to her. in the course of The Crucible Abigail is a victim of her own choices in the present events that go on. I want the light of God. I wrote in his book. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil! (Miller 45). Furthermore. This starts with just Abigail. I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil.

Instead Abigail comes up with this scenario in order to give evidence that Elizabeth is a witch and everybody believes even though Mary Warren admits that the poppet was hers Elizabeth is still arrested and put in jail. The purpose of The Crucible was to give Arthur Miller a way to write about McCarthyism without being put in jail or be blamed as a communist. Truly. Abigail is willing to do anything to get her job done making her scary and crazy. Although she has had a rough past that does not give her an excuse to put most of a town into jail for revenge. Abigail is an evil little girl that destroyed a town of people all for her own selfish reasons. Abigail was a scary girl. she also sentenced them to death and let them hang. . I’m holes all over from their damned needles and pins. y’know” (Miller 140). “Why. Abigail cannot be pardoned of her actions. Abigail purposefully harms herself in order to make it seem like people are hurting her using their devil magic. Abigail knew that if she just threw Elizabeth’s name out in court people would be suspicious since Elizabeth was the person that fired her. She made the choice to start the trials and let all those people hang even though she could have stopped them at any time. look at my leg. Throughout this book his characters and the events are connected to what happened during the era of McCarthyism. Nobody would believe that Abigail had actually done this to herself so there must be someone else doing this to her putting further evidence forth in the witch trials against innocent people. While in the woods with John Proctor Abigail shows him all of her scars saying. She is even willing to harm herself and beat herself till the point where there is no denying that she is being harmed by other people.Orlando 4 It can be seen in this situation that Abigail is a mastermind who knew exactly how to set up Elizabeth that made it seem like she was not doing this out of revenge. Lastly. Touching her stomach: The jab your wife gave me’s not healed yet. Not only did she put them put them in jail. but she was not the only one considering history repeated itself in the McCarthy Era.

Abigail knowing that the town is in a time where witches are feared decides to use that to frame people she doesn’t like and get rid of them for good without anybody realizing they shouldn’t put their trust into a devious little girl. During the book Abigail performs trials on the people of Salem to make it seem like they are all witches. She wanted to take revenge on the people of Crucible that had wronged her so she made the choice to take that revenge by starting the Salem Witch Trials. There are people out there like Abigail that know what . Abigail embodies the ideas of The Crucible within her character by relating to the definitions of a crucible. Also. The second definition of a crucible is a pot or vessel used to melt down metals under severe heat and pressure. As a result. These trials were very sever since they determined whether you lived or died. The first definition of a crucible is a severe test or trial. So many other people have made this same mistake of taking their revenge instead of just resolving the problem in a more understanding way. The pot in this definition represents the court system that melted all of Salem’s peoples act away. The government is forced to perform trials because it is a time that all allegations made had to be followed in order to find the truth. McCarthy knowing that the world is going through a time where communism is a big threat and fear decides to blame people in the government he wants to get rid of as communists.Orlando 5 Abigail is one of these characters that provide a double meaning. Under the severe stare of Abigail and the pressure to save their own lives the people would lie and say that they were witches when they were not. This shows that even in a perfect Puritan society people still lie even though it is against the law. There are obvious similarities between the two that show Abigail represents McCarthy in The Crucible. In The Crucible Miller makes Abigail represent McCarthy himself. Abigail Williams becomes a victim of her own choices in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller.

Others made their decisions irrationally without thinking about the consequences which then lead to their demise. When making a choice there are always consequences whether those consequences are positive or negative depends on the path the person decides to take. . whether or not they can deal with the consequences of their actions is the real choice people have to make.Orlando 6 they are getting into and could deal with the consequences of their actions. all people make decisions. It is hard dealing with the consequences of actions considering that they could haunt them for the rest of their lives. In the end.
