The organisations that plan and buy

services in
Calderdale & Kirklees want to make

BIG CUTS TO OUR HOSPITAL SERVICES

On March 15th, theyll start a 14 week

Public Consultation
Please tell them what you think!
These organisations (called Clinical Commissioning
Groups) want to:
Knock down Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and sell off the site.
Replace it with a small planned care hospital on the Acre Mill site,
for things like hip replacements, eye operations etc. This would
be for ALL patients from Calderdale & Kirklees.
Shut Huddersfield A&E - just provide an urgent care centre for
minor injuries & illnesses
Send 91% of Huddersfield A&E patients to Calderdale Royal
Hospital A&E (to be called an Emergency Centre), and the
remaining 9% to already-overcrowded A&Es like Barnsley
Enlarge Calderdale Royal Hospital into the ONLY hospital for
both areas for A&E and acute care (ie severe illnesses that need
urgent attention). Access to the Emergency Centre (A&E) would
only be by ambulance, following triage/selection of patients.
Yorkshire Ambulance Service would have to provide 10,000 more
ambulance journey hours/year - but they cant say how they
would provide this.
Many hospital services would be moved to unspecified places
outside the hospitals.
Cut the overall number of hospital beds and staff.

From 15 March, the Clinical Commissioning Groups will ask the

public to attend consultation events, read their materials and fill in
questionnaires. They are calling their consultation:
Right Care Right Time Right Place
ASAP AFTER 15 MARCH, CAMPAIGN GROUPS WHO WANT TO
SAVE OUR A&ES AND HOSPITALS WILL PUBLISH LEAFLETS
AND ONLINE
ADVICE ON HOW TO RESPOND TO THE
CONSULTATION

Please look out for these suggestions on how to

respond - we hope youll find them useful
The official draft consultation materials that weve seen are full of
spin. We dont expect the final versions to be any better.
The draft has huge information gaps:
Its not even clear what the consultation questionnaire is asking
us! We cant tell if its asking whether or not we want the
proposed cuts and changes - or how these cuts and changes will
affect us!
Will the new services provide acceptable patient care?
What are the ambulance travel times to A&E for people furthest
from Halifax? What increased patient death rates are likely to
result from increased distances to A&E ?
Will NHS 111, GPs and urgent care centres in Huddersfield &
Halifax be able to cope with all the people with minor injuries and
illness who wont be allowed to go to the Emergency Centre/A&E
in Halifax?
