March 2016

Dear Parents,
We've finished round one of ISTEP+ and look forward to a break in
testing. The next round of ISTEP+ will begin the week of April 18th.
Please mark your calendars. As always, we ask for your help in avoiding
appointments during that week if at all possible so that student testing is
not disrupted.
It's been a great month at NEMS!

 Our wrestling team performed well at county, where we had

both a county champion and runner up. Seven of our nine
qualifiers for the county placed in their weight class!
 Our show choir, Vocal Revolution, won two grand championships
and several individual awards.
 Two different band students won top honors by receiving gold
ratings at the state solo and ensemble competition.
 Our jazz band, 16th Street Groove, also earned a gold rating at
ISSMA.
 We recognized over 30 students during our quarterly Miller
STARS awards ceremony, celebrating students who have
shown grit and perseverance to achieve success.
 Our We the People civics club hosted a former White House
assistant press secretary, and wowed him!
 Students Skyped with the award winning author of the book Ice
Dogs to learn more about what great writers do.
 Our medical detectives students learned hands on with an actual
forensic detective how science can be applied to solving
crimes.
 Many students showed off their talents, from singing and playing
instruments to dancing and comedy, during our annual talent
show.
These are just some of the many successes at NEMS just within the last
month!
Go Millers!

End of quarter March 9

Noblesville Schools’ Learning Showcase March 16

The end of the third
quarter grading period was
Wednesday , March 9.
Report cards will be emailed to parents the
week of March 14. Paper copies will be
sent home with students whose families do
not have an email address on file.

Join us on Wednesday, March 16 while we shine the spotlight on
Noblesville Schools’ teachers and students as they demonstrate
how they exemplify the mission of Noblesville Schools through
short showcase style booths. The event will take place at NHS
from 6:00 – 8:00 pm and will begin in the auditorium. Visit
Learning Showcase for more information.

Reminder: You may also access your child’s
grades at any time by logging into the
PowerSchool parent portal with the
account you created.

Pennies for Patients campaign
Our Pennies for Patients campaign raised
over $2,000 for the Leukemia and
Lymphoma Society. Our National Junior
Honor Society members did an amazing job
of organizing the campaign and collecting
and counting money. Thank you to all who
contributed and made this campaign a
huge success!

NEMS Spring sports participation
Spring sports are starting up
this week! The callouts
were held on March 8
during SLT. If your child
would still like to participate in track and
field, he/she will need to turn in paperwork
including a sports physical signed by a
licensed physician that is dated after April
1, 2015. Please see the NEMS website
under athletics/documents and forms for
more information. Track and field is open
to boys and girls in all three grades.

Miller Madness Basketball tournament
The Student Council is once again sponsoring the
Miller Madness Basketball Tournament!
Registration forms were due March 11. Miller
Madness is a 5 on 5 half-court tournament to be played after
school on March 15, 16, 17 and 22. The winners will play the
NEMS staff on the day before Spring Break. All funds raised
through the tournament will go to the Humane Society.

Makerspace materials needed
We need some “Makerspace” materials in the NEMS Media
Center. Can you help us out?
What is a Makerspace? Creativity in the
library. Makerspace is about learning to
think for yourself, create and to look for
do-it-yourself solutions. It is a place where
people come together to create, invent,
and learn. Some sixth grade students
became “engineers” and created
circuits, windmills and green screen videos
to demonstrate energy transformations.
After spring break, we will be creating gardens and working with
hydroponics and rock creations. We need some small smooth
rocks (less than 4” in size), seeds, and potting soil.
We could also use toothpicks, craft sticks, cotton string, yarn,
ribbon, fabric, rope, legos, board games or any other craft
materials. Just send anything to the NEMS Media Center.

Spring Pictures
Mark your calendar! Picture Day is
coming Thursday, March 24. Look for more
information on your child's Picture Day
flyer / order form to come home soon. Visit
Lifetouch.com for clothing suggestions,
online payment details, and more. If you go
online use the following Picture day ID:

aaaaaa

Our makerspace area is open to all students all day long!
Students may have a teacher sign them up on the electronic
database to come in after lunch or during SLT. Be sure to look for
our Makerspace area at the Learning Showcase on March 16th at
NHS from 6-8 pm.

Lunch account balances
Sign up at www.paypams.com to check your child’s lunch
account balances, monitor daily purchases, and set up
automated notifications regarding account balances . There is a
nominal fee only if you choose to make deposits.
