Infectious Diseases Extra Credit Assignment

Many infectious diseases can be avoided. Over 300 new infectious diseases have been
identified since 1940. Being aware and informed may help prevent the spread of disease. In today's
world of advanced mobility/transportation, the threat of disease spreading is much higher. During your
research you will become an expert on an infectious disease that is caused by a bacterium, virus,
protist or fungus. Create a poster (with typed sections) that includes each of the following sections:
A. The name of the disease, your name and class, and a picture of the bacterium, virus,
protist or fungus that causes your disease.

B. The Disease
i. What is the name of the bacterium, virus, protist or fungus that causes the
disease?
ii. What region, race, gender or age group does it mostly affect?
iii. Who discovered it? If this information is not available, you must mention that
this information is not known to the scientific community.
iv. Where and when was it discovered?
v. How does the disease spread?

C. Symptoms of the Disease:

i.

What are the symptoms of the disease?

ii.

How long is the incubation period (time from exposure to feeling symptoms) of
the disease?

D. Diagnosis of the Disease:

i.

Are there any tests or procedures that can be used by doctors to prove the
person is infected? If so, describe the techniques.

E. Treatment and Prevention:

i.

How is the disease treated?

ii.

How is the disease prevented?

F. Interesting Facts about the Disease:

i.

3 interesting facts about the disease or about the organism that causes it
(symptoms are not considered interesting facts).

G. Reflection:
i.

Did you know about this disease before researching it? If so, how did you know
about it?

ii.

What were you surprised to learn from researching this disease?

iii.

Why did you choose this disease?

H. Works Cited/ Bibliography:

You will need a minimum of 2 credible sources. This could include books, magazines,
internet (.org, .edu, .gov) and library databases. When selecting online references,
remember that not all information on the internet is reliable. Always try to use journal
articles or governmental documents as the "authority," and not rely on commercial sites
(.com).

As with any report, be sure to paraphrase the information you use. If you choose to use
direct quotes from the article, you must use quotation marks. Be sure NOT to
plagiarize!!

Website:
Autors last name, first name (if available). Title of work. Title of site or database.
