IS JESUS GOD

Evidence from Bile

According to the majority of Christians, Jesus is the Son of God and is God himself. The Christians believe
that Jesus is God and he sacrificed himself for the sins of the humans. We need to look into the authenticity
of this claim. If we accept that Jesus is God, how did we know he is God? Did Jesus tell us that he is God? If
we look into New Testament, Jesus never claimed to be God. In the four Gospels Jesus is referred to son of
man at least over fifty times. Now the question arise, if Jesus did not say he is God then who said it. May be
his disciples, but not even his disciples considered Jesus God. It was Paul who propagated the divinity
of Jesus and claimed that Jesus died for the sins of humans. Lets analyze the claim in the light of Bible.
The Old Testament is very clear that there is only one God. Everywhere God is mentioned in Old Testament
He is referred as One God. The first commandment states, I am the LORD your God, who brought
you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery; you shall have no other gods before
me (Exodus 20:2-3). Same is repeated in Deuteronomy 5. In Old Testament God has warned the Israelites
of severe punishment if they serve other Gods, again and again. Though in Old Testament righteous people
are referred as son of God. Even if we take that literal then there are so many sons of God, so what is different
about Jesus.
If we study the New Testament, nowhere in New Testament Jesus has claimed to be God. Jesus says
in Mathew 7:21 Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,
but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. Here Jesus is making a clear
distinction between him and The Father (God). (If Jesus is God then accepting Jesus should be enough).
In Mathew 26:39 Jesus prays to God, My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet
not what I want but what you want, now if Jesus is God why does he need to pray to God? In Mathew
26:45Jesus refers to himself as son of Man (See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into
the hands of sinners), how can God be son of a man? Jesus replies to Jews in John 8:54 If I glorify
myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, he of whom you say, He is
our God . In John 10:18 Jesus says I have received this command from my Father, does God
get commands? In John 15:1 Jesus says I am the true vine, and my Father is the
vinegrower. Vine is a creation and God is the creator, how a creation can be a God? According to John
20:17 Jesus said to Mary Magdalene, Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended
to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and
your Father, to my God and your God.' Here Jesus is calling his disciples his brothers. Can a man
be brother to God. Also Jesus says he is ascending to my father and your father, to my God and your God,
that very clearly shows that Jesus is not God but a human. Jesus says in Mathew 24:36 (also in Mark
13:32) But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the

Son, but only the Father. All knowing is an attribute of God, if Jesus is God how can he not know about
the end time?
We also need to examine the view of Jesuss apostles and other people around him. No one during Jesuss
Ministry has called or considered him God. If we look at the evidence from Bible, it clearly shows that people
did not consider Jesus God, but the Prophet of God. When people saw great miracles of Jesus, they called
him a great Prophet. Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet
has risen among us (Luke 7:16). According to Gospel of Luke when Jesus met two people travelling to
Emmaus, the people called Jesus a mighty Prophet, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a
prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people (Luke 24:19). If Jesus had
considered himself divine he should have corrected people on both instances. Even the disciples of Jesus
considered him a prophet and not God. Disciple Peter address people of Jerusalem saying, "You that are
Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with
deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves
know (Acts 2:22). Peter said preaching and addressing the people of Jerusalem called Jesus Servant of
God. The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors
has glorified his servant Jesus (Acts 3:13). When God raised up his servant, he sent him first
to you, to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways" (Acts 3:26). Jesus is called
Servant of God again in Acts 4:247 and 4:30. Again in Acts 5 we are told about apostles, And every day
in the temple and at home they did not cease to teach and proclaim Jesus as the
Messiah (Acts 5:42), if apostles believed that Jesus is God, they would have preached so.
Above are some examples from scripture that clearly show that Jesus never claimed to be God, rather his
sayings are contrary to the idea of Jesus being divine. Also neither apostles nor the people considered him
Divine. Lets analyze the claim by rationale and logic. If we accept that Jesus is God, then we have to admit
that God was crucified. Can human being crucify God? Is God that helpless and powerless in front of a crowd
of people? Some of my Christian friends will argue Jesus died willingly for our sins, but did Jesus say that
he is dying for other peoples sin? Nowhere in the Bible. According to the Gospel of Matthew and Mark the
last words of Jesus on cross were My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Would a person willingly
sacrificing himself say that? Even if we accept that Jesus died for the sins of others, could God not just
forgive them? Why it needs a Gods crucifixion? God is almighty, He could just have forgiven everybody.
Another important point is that God is eternal, how can we expect God to be born of a woman? If a woman
gave birth to a God, then she should be Goddess, as well. My Christian friends may argue that Jesus
said, before Abraham was, I am(John 8:58) but that is a vague statement open to many
interpretations, and yes spiritually all livings may exist before their birth (Though some one may argue that
I AM is the name of God and here Jesus is referring himself as God by saying I AM, (in reference to Exodus
3:14) but in Exodus 3:14 God said I AM THAT I AM, The Greek word used at both places is different. Also

Jesus did not say that in Greek, so exactly what word did he use?). But if pre-existence is the criteria to be
God, then there are other Gods than Jesus. God says to Jeremiah Before I formed you in the womb I
knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the
nations. So should we accept Jeremiah as God because he was appointed prophet even before his birth?
Another argument in the support of the claim is the miracles of Jesus, but again if miracles are the criteria
for being God then almost all prophets are Gods.
Most importantly, if Jesus was God, being God is the most distinguishing privilege he had,
he should have announced about his divinity in very clear words instead of some vague
statements. Some people argue that Jesus claimed that when he said I and Father are
one (John 10:30) but still that is a vague statement and is open to so many interpretations.
Also there are instances when people called Jesus a great Prophet, in his presence, if Jesus
was God he should have corrected them to call him God and not a prophet. Rather very
clearly Jesus denies to be divine in John 5:30 I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge;
and my judgment is just, because I seek to do not my own will but the will of him who
sent me.
Now question arise if Jesus did not claim to be God, then why Christianity ended up accepting him as God?
Though there are some denominations who consider Jesus as son of God but not God, even though they are
a very small minority. But that puts a question mark on the divinity of Jesus. The author of the divinity of
Jesus is Paul. Weather he believed Jesus to be Divine or not, his writings are interpreted as to claim Divinity
for Jesus. If we critically analyze the writings of Paul, he never claimed Divinity for Jesus in clear words.
Also the writings of Paul at times are in direct contrast to the teachings of Jesus. The important question is,
can a subordinate overwrite the teaching of his superior? Can a salve preach something opposite to his
master? If the answer is no then we should take the claims of Jesus and reject any claims or teachings
contrary to that. But my Christian friends instead of rejecting any teachings contrary to Jesus or Old
Testament, try to amalgamate them together. Any true Christian needs to know what the Law is and what
did Jesus teach during his time.
Last but not the least, Judaism, Christianity and Islam are considered monotheistic religions. If we accept
Jesus as God, Christianity is no more monotheistic. God says in Quran Say, He is God the One, God
the eternal. He begot no one nor was He begotten. No one is comparable to Him (112:1-4).
