Fleischmanns
Red Letter Names

Fleischmanns Red Letter Names,
from the Greater Fleischmanns
Museum of Memories
For 2016, our history feature will focus on prominent citizens of Fleischmanns, or Griffin Corners, as it was earlier
known. Our first installment focuses on Matthew Griffin,
the man for whom Griffin Corners was named.

Although he was born in Dutchess County in 1811,
Matthew Griffin’s family later moved to this corner
of Delaware County. By 1836, he had established and
was running a store here, on what is now the corner
of Main Street and Bridge Street and the former site
of the Fleischmanns Hotel and where Roberts Auction would stand later. It was Griffin who succeeded
in 1848 in getting an official US Post Office here,
who then served as the first Postmaster and who had
a hand in naming it. By 1851 he had added the practice of law to his many talents, and was admitted to
the NY State Bar. Griffin even served in the NY State
Assembly for several years in the 1870’s. Griffin
lived a long and eventful life; he died in early 1903.
Matthew Griffin left many descendents, and a thriving community.

Fleischmanns Children’s Holiday Party
A highlight of the holiday season is always the Fleischmanns Holiday Party. This
year was of course, no exception; over 35 children attended. So many elves, 18 in all,
helped organize games, pin the Nose on Rudolph, letter writing to Santa and craft activities in which the community children participated. A big thank you to the chief elf
of many years, Marilee Asher, and all the volunteers who once again made this a
great event for the children.
New to the holiday party this year was a craft table sponsored by Fleischmanns First.
In anticipation of the upcoming Maple Festival, Fleischmanns First volunteers Kathy
Green and Isabel Vazquez organized a crafts table at which kids could make tree ornaments in the shape of a maple leaf. Yvonne Reuter was on hand to invite girls and
boys, ages 8-12, to apply to the Maple Court of princesses and princesses.
Always a happy moment at the party is when the presents are given out and each
child has an opportunity to sit on Santa’s knee.
Enjoy the happy faces from this years’ Fleischmanns Holiday Party!
