***CELEBRATING ONE HUNDRED YEARS***

Fleischmanns First Maple Festival 2016
It all began at a Fleischmanns First meeting in fall 2011 when Peggy
Kearney suggested the organization sponsor a Maple Pancake Breakfast.
After all, our winters are cold and long and folks want to have something
to do to break the monotony. Those in attendance responded well to the
idea and plans were soon in the works for a Maple Pancake Breakfast
with food donated by local stores, and Vly Creek Maple Farm syrup on
sale and on the tables to accompany the pancakes and bacon etc. The
event was well attended and a good time was had by all. The next year
The Maple Bake-Off Café and the Maple Court were added to the festivities. Last year the Sap House 5K was added. This year the Maple Festival is a Scenic Byway signature event and is back
as a weekend full of events all in celebration of the age old tradition of tapping and making maple syrup.
Mark your calendar and come to as many of the events as you can. Consider joining in on the Sap House Run or baking
an entry for the Maple Bake-Off. Want to know more about making maple syrup? Attend Maple Sugaring in the Catskills or head to Davis Farm or Vly Creek Maple Farm and see how it is done.
This issue of Fleischmanns Flyer is dedicated to maple sugaring and the festival.

Celebrating Maple Sugaring….an old tradition!
The picture above is of a brochure from 1972 announcing the annual Maple Festival, Fleischmanns, NY.
The copy on the inside is as follows:
“Visit the Fleischmanns Maple Festival, a village event promoting the area, its history and its
people, its commerce and its activities. Enjoy a
Saturday in the beautiful country. All events will
be held on Main Street. Motels are available,
offering a special package deal for this relaxing
weekend.”
The young women were contestants for the Fleischmanns Village Maple Queen.

Maple Sugaring Program at Skene Library
As part of the MapleFest Weekend in Fleischmanns,
Skene Memorial Library will present a multi-media
program on Maple Sugaring in the Catskills, at 2 PM
on Saturday April 2. There will be historic images, a
short video, a presentation on small-scale do-ityourself syrup-making, and displays of old-time tapping equipment, and a discussion of the more modern
techniques that have come into use in the last several
decades.
There will also be readings from old-time accounts of
maple sugaring in the area.
It promises to be an information-filled afternoon. For
more information, call the library at 845-254-4581.

FLEISCHMANNS RED LETTER NAMES
Fleischmanns Red Letter Names,
from the Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories
The Finch Family
A long-time prominent name in the area, the Finch family has had a major Fleischmanns presence for generations. Richard Finch from Clovesville married Maude, who came over the mountains from Sullivan County. In
the early 1950’s, they moved up onto Hog Mountain, where they had a dairy farm. But for many years they
were also major maple syrup producers, tapping thousands of trees
each year, and at their peak, producing over 1000 gallons of syrup a
year. This was still with the old-fashioned method of collecting sap
in buckets, and boiling it down over the old wood fire. For years
they invited in classes from the school to view the operation at
Finch Maple Farm, and those who grew up here will have fond
memories of these visits. There was even an article about their maple production in a New York City newspaper.
Richard was a jack-of-all-trades, working as a grave-digger, running
the dairy farm, mowing lawns, and even delivering coal and ice to
the Grand Hotel.
Maude’s grandson Seth tells the story that Maude had helped her
family do maple sugaring as a girl, and thought theirs was a pretty big operation. But when she married over
the mountain, and saw thousands of trees tapped over an entire mountainside, she got a sense of the magnitude
of the sugaring here.

The Maple Bake-Off Café Returns
There’s a new look to 1053 Main Street….the walls of the retail space are finished, new lighting installed and its ready
to serve as the site of the Maple Bake-Off Café on Sunday, April 3rd. In addition to hosting the Maple Bake-Off contest,
the Café will also host the Sap House Award ceremony at 12:30 and Maple Court Crowning by the Honorable Mayor
Don Kearney at 1pm.
While all this is happening, the Maple Bake-Off judges, Devon Mills of The Peekamoose,
Mike Cioffi of Phoenicia Dinner, Amelia Hegeman of Zephyr and Ellen Verni, food writer,
will sample the bake-off entries and identify the blue ribbon winner for each of the three
entry categories, traditional, gluten free and intergenerational.
The Ate o Ate Food Truck will be parked outside and will be offering maple infused luncheon choices for you to buy and bring into
the Café where we will be serving, coffee, tea, maple sugar cookies,
punch and the Pine Hill/Fleischmanns Rotary will be serving maple walnut ice cream.
Once the judges have announced the winners, bite sized tastes of all the entries will be available.
You can decide which is your favorite and then join in the auction and bid on your favorite to
take home. The Maple Bake-Off Café is a fundraiser in support of Fleischmanns First many annual projects. Courtesy of
our sponsors, there will be no entrance fee!
We look forward to seeing you there.
