PROTECT TEMPLES AND WATER BODIES!!

Vedas ordain y N|o@ ueyzo@ uo@ Tz LzDuT:@ (Aruna Prasna-1) which means
there is Lord Resident in Water, hence dont urinate in water, dont spit in water and dont bathe without
clothes. Following vedic traditions our ancestors never used to do these bad deeds. They used to worship
water as Lord Narayana like. Pushkar lake in Rajasthan and Neervanna perumal lake near Madras are all
part of 108 divya desams. Thanks to the ill-founded drainage systems unlike ancient ones, which has
polluted all the rivers, lakes and pious water bodies with all bad and non-eco-friendly practices completely
against Vedas. India has at present become one of the most fresh water starved lands of the world with all
of its rivers, lakes and wetlands denigrated. Despite knowing their environmental, social and economic
significance, city planners have willfully neglected and destroyed these water bodies including the divine
Ganges.
Today these water bodies are encroached, full of sewage and garbage. Because of unplanned urbanization,
much of the landscape around the lakes has been covered by impervious surfaces. Considering the present
bleak water scenario of Indian cities, today we need our urban lakes and wetlands more than ever.
The increasing loss of urban water bodies has also happened in Hyderabad, within last 12 years.
Hyderabad has lost 3245 ha. area of its water in the form of lakes and ponds (Times of India, 2012). There
are endless examples in India that shows such devastating state of urban water bodies. Mohenjo-Daro and
Harappan civilizations became extinct when water was lost. If rivers go dry , the civilizations will also go
dry. The conditions of rivers in many developing countries of Asia are precarious. They are largely used as
dumping ground for industrial waste, municipal waste or garbage. The banks of rivers need to be protected
by planting trees as they only have the power to prevent the soil of the banks from erosion. Unfortunately
we remember the rivers only when they are flooded or dried. We have thus denigrated the worshippable
water bodies which personify the Lord in the same way as we destroyed our temples in Telangana and
Andhra through the thoughtless 30/87 Legislation.
Like the movement to protect our temples, time has come to undertake a movement for restoring
sanctity and purity of water bodies through a proper water management system. Save Ganga Project or
Save Yamuna project have consumed billions of rupees. Over 180 drains join into the river Yamuna in
Delhi alone and many more on the way to Mathura and Mathura itself. If each one of us take vows to
prevent flow of filthy water into rivers and prevent drains leading to rivers, much of the problems will be
solved. We have to start with ourselves. The drainage waters need to be separately treated and recycled
for certain selective domestic and agrarian uses.
The recent World Cultural Festival2016 event has brought into focus in an unprecedented way the
need for a clean Yamuna thus serving the larger purpose of the National water Tribunal. The suggestion
made by the Honble Delhi Chief Minister on the stage of the event itself in the presence of several Central
Ministers for Sri Sri Ravishankar Guruji to use his good offices and influence with both the Governments
and spearhead the effort to clean Yamuna need to be implemented.
We are facing a terrible drought in Telangana State for past many years. We have committed a great
sin by letting drainage water into countless lakes like Osman sagar which is personification of Lord Chilkur
Balaji himself. The Telangana government has named its programme of restoration of tanks as Mission
Kakatiya as a tribute to the Kakatiya dynasty rulers who had built a large number of irrigation tanks in
Telangana. Let us all appreciate the efforts of Sri T Harish Rao, the Irrigation minister of Telangana and pray
for the success of this ambitious project with the help of the people of Telangana and this country. We have
to learn from the message given by Sri Sri and the Art of Living Foundation. If we have to survive we, should
think of doing prayaschittam by reviving our temples through a strong Telangana Dharmika Parishad which
will bring rains by grace of Almighty and saving Osman Sagar and other lakes. Lets properly treat the
drainage water in village treatment plants and recycle water for various agricultural and other utility purposes.
VAK and The Temples Protection Movement appeals to all the Devotees to participate in Save Water
bodies and temples movement. Lets restore the piety of natural drinking water bodies.

There should be no regional boundaries for temples.

Anecdotes on Vishnu Sahasranama - 181

INCOMPREHENSIBLE IN NATURE
Sri V.S.Karunakaran, Chennai

Normally we see Lord Mahavishnu in the temples

with four arms. But there are exceptions to prove
the general.
The Lord in one of the many
temples in
Kancheepuram gives darshan with eight arms. He
is therefore called Ashtabhuja in Sanskrit. He
holds the mighty disc called Sudarshana, an arrow,
the sword called Nandaka, and the Abhayamudra
in the four right arms.
Abhayamudra refers to the way one holds his palm
spread with all the five fingers pointing upwards.
It is frequently used by those regulating traffic
to indicate the sense Stop!. It thus coveys the
instruction Stop fearing and worrying.
As the palm of the Lord resembles the wide beautiful
petals of a big well blossomed red lotus the palm
in Abhayamudra is also described by some
figuratively just by the term lotus.
He holds the conch called Panchajanya, the bow
known as Sarnga, the shield, the mace the
gada known by the name Koumodakee in His
four left arms.
Thirumangai Azhwar has sung this Lord by a set
of ten sweet Tamil verses starting with the term
Tiripuram Moonru.
He describes the eight weapons carried by the
Lord in the third verse there. He lists them as
(1.) Arrow (2.)Bow (3.)Mace (4.)Conch (5.)Sword
(6.)Disc (7.) Shield and (8.) lotus.
I am giving a feel-free version of his verse in Sanskrit
for the benefit of those of us who cannot read
the original in Tamil.

Tradition has it that Sri Nadadoor Ammal (1165AD1275AD) grandson of Sri Nadadoor Azhwan lived
in the Sannidhi Street of Ashtabhuja.
Sri Nadadoor Azhwan was the son of Kamala
Ammal, younger sister of Sri Ramanuja (1017 AD1137 AD).

Many of the readers may also be aware of the

fact that Sri Nadadoor Ammal was also the grand
preceptor of Swamy Vedanta Desika (1268AD1368AD).
There is a sloka on the lord Ashtabhuja as he
rushed to protect the elephant from the crocodile.
According to some scholars it is from Sri Nadadoor
Ammals pen, though the sloka is referred to as
a purana sloka by Swamy Desika in Sachharitra
Raksha. According to them, purana just means
old.
The sloka runs thus

The sloka mentions Abhayamudra as Abhayam
in the term zUqxqprq in the place of lotus
mentioned as zsbr mwm in the Sanskrit version
by me of the verse in Tamil by Thirumangai Azhwar
given above.
I have also explained how there is no contradiction
between the terms Abhayam i.e. Abhayamudra
of the palm of the Lord and lotus.
I have given the Sanskrit version from which one
can easily see that the verse of Thirumangai Azhwar
is in the form of a conversation between
Thirumangai Azhwar and Lord Ashtabhuaja.
Thirumangai Azhwar entered into a fantasy as he
had the Darshan of the handsome Ashtabhuaja.
Thirumangai Azhwar became a beautiful dame.
There stood before him no- her. Ashtabhuja the
handsome lad.
Seeing Him standing with eight hands all carrying
weapons as listed, the dame let us name her
Parakala Nayakee asks Him Who are you?.
The lad answers I am from the abode of Ashtabhuja.
The answer is not straight. The lord does not say
I am Ashtabhuja. Instead He says I am from
the abode of Ashtabhuja.
He is not lying. For, even Ashtabhuja is from the
abode of Ashtabhuja only.

But then why does not the Lord tell straightly I

am Ashtabhuja
For He is afraid that the dame if she comes to
know He is the supreme one, she might be awe
stuck and so would not feel at ease. He cleverly
conceals His identity but at the same time does
not tell a lie. Is He not from the abode of
Ashtabhuja?
Now Parakala Nayakee looks at the smart
Astabhuja. Well dressed, the youth had eight broad
shoulders reminding peaks of Hills. Thus He had
eight mountains in His frame. He held the big
high valued gem Kaustubha on His broad chest.
Thus He had in Him gems. There was Goddess
Lakshmee seated on flower sticking to His chest.
He was as if He were the place from where
Goddess Lakshmee emerged. He was holding
a conch in one of His eight hands. Thus He
contained Conch.
Parakala Nayakee thought over all these. It occurred
to her that there were lot features common to
Ocean and Him. Ocean would hold mountains,
gems, conches etc; and as per mythology
Goddess Lakshmee emerged from Ocean.
She decides to ask the youth openly You resemble
the ocean in many aspects. You seem to be the
one who taught out of mercy the arts, the Vedas
and scriptures to the heavenly ones and lesser
mortals. Who are you?
The answer again was I am from the abode of
Ashtabhuja.
I am giving the Sanskrit version for this portion
of Thirumangai Azhwars verse fifth in number in
that set of verses:-

Because of this supreme majesty like that of

an ocean even to the enlightened ones like our
Thirumangai Azhwar the Lord is called
unfathomable in nature.
Still He takes care to keep His devotees
comfortable. He does not frighten them. He
discloses Himself exposing to them His nature
gradually.
Sri Parasara Bhattar extends this further in his
Srirangarajastavam- second hundred by
comparing the chest of the Lord to the milky
ocean while being churned

Madhura Vijayam - 54

Sri Ranganatha Travel Part II

Tamil Manuscript : Sree Venugopalan, Chennai

Story so far: The story based on the 14th century incidents,
was written by Sri Venugopalan which is based on the
historic facts elucidated in Madhura Vijayam composed
by Maharani Ganga Devi, Chief Queen of King
Kampanaraya. Two young men Vallabha and Dutta set
out on an expedition to locate the idol of Lord Ranganatha
of Srirangam, which was saved by four Kodavas from
being ransacked by Muslim invaders. After several
adventures the two boys, with the help of Chenchu tribes
found the idol along with one Kodava who protected
the idol for more than eighteen years deep inside the
forest of Chandragiri. Lord Ranganatha was brought
to Tirumala and King Ranganatha Yadavaraya the ruler
of that place patronized the upkeep of the idol with daily
pujas. Coincidentally Sri Gopanna, commander-in-chief
of the Vijayanagaras mulvoy province reaches Tirumala
in search of Lord Ranganatha and he promises Vallabha
help of Vijayanagara to restore Lord Ranganatha to Sri
Rangam which enabled Vallabha break his fast unto
death. Vallabha and Datta turned to Kancheepuram
on their way back, ensured safety of Manjari with her
neighbors after the death of Singazhagar who was the
key energy behind the expedition and left the town with
disguised Vaishnavas as the fort doors were closed as
a defense to an impending attack by Vijayanagar army.
The disguised Vaishnava leader was no other than
Camphor merchant who revealed that he was the head
of Intelligence army of Vijayanagar. Dutta, Vallabha and
the Vijayanagar men managed to kill all their pursuers
and escaped to the foothills of the mountain on which
Sambuvarayas fort exists where at the behest of
Camphor merchant Vallabha and Datta enter the
Rajagambhira fort as Gem merchants to rescue
Makaravizhiyaal. They spot her in the palace while selling
gems to the queen. Datta wanted to abort the mission
and go while Vallabha stays firm. After some mutual
arguments the parting friends unite again to the mission
and get trapped in the palace attempting to meet the
princess.
Meanwhile at Vijayanagara Bukkaraya moved by the
events has convened a high level meeting with his son
Kampana Raya, Gopanna, Salva Mangu and other subjects
to discuss the course of action on conquests to south
and have decided to taken on Madhurai Sultan in spite
of Bhamanis power always threatening them across
Tungabhadra. As a first step Kancheepuram was
conquered and Kampana Rayas army is now advancing
towards Rajagambhira mountain. Vallabha and Datta
have been who got trapped in one side of the fort got
rescued by princess Madhurangini and her aides. Mean
while the Vijayanagar forces have reached the fort of
Sambuvarayas and have started attacking the fort.
Vallabha and the captive princess watch this from a vantage
point in the palace. Read further.

The fort of Raja Gambeera mountain in North Arcot

district was a part of the present Javvadhu Mountains.
The fort and the city at its foothill was known as
Padai Veedu in those days. The present day Padai

English Translation : CSL Narasimhan

Veedu (which is also known as padavedu) is little

far from the olden padaiveedu. The old padaiveedu
is dilapidated and has become a forest now. The
Vijayanagar kingdom first attacked the Padaiveedu
city. The Chief of the fort surrendered very soon.
When went inside the fort, they realized that
Sambuvaraya family are already inside the Raja
gambeera fort. Next the army surrounded the
Rajagambhira fort. Since the fort was on top of the
hill it was well protected. Whenever a war emerges
the Sambuvarayas safely gets into the fort. The fort
cannot be captured easily as it was on top of the
cliffy mountain. The commander-in-chief Gopanna and
Kandarakuli Maraiyya Nayakar both were thinking
of how to get into the fort. They identified few spots
and started attacking with heavy tools to hammer
the fort walls down. At the same time, on the other
side they were arranging sand bags secretly so that
the soldiers can get into the fort. The battle took
place the entire day between the two armies.
The next day the battle started again. Within a few
hours of the day, The Vijayanagara army could climb
most of the fort area. The sambuvaraya army got
afraid after seeing this. The soldiers ran here and
there to protect themselves. The doors of the fort
were shattered by the Vijayanagara army.
Vallabha being in his place asked, Princess! What
has happened?
The fort door has been broken!
Hail! Long live Vijayanagara Kingdom Vallabha shouted
with joy. Then he asked ,Has the army started coming
inside?
No not yet. They are trying. They are fighting with
the soldiers outside the entrance and they would soon
be defeated.
Vallbhan remained silent for sometime and asked
again, oh Princess , What is happening now?
Sir!, Most of the enemy soldiers got killed . The ones
who are left are running for their lives. The Vijayanagara
soldiers are entering inside.
Vallbhan again jumped with joy.
The entire fort was getting destroyed. The King Raja
Narayana sambuvarayar was very much in rage and
was shouting at his soldiers who were running, Oh
soldiers! Please join me to protect the fort, saying
this he gathered near the entrance of the fort.
At the same time Kampana Raya and his army came
there and both the armies started fighting. Sambuvarayar
identified Kambannar and started attacking him.

The body is also not still . He is moving swiftly
here and there! Now I understand whom he looks

the princess with excitement.
Oh Princess! What are you saying? Vallabha jumped
from his place and asked.
Oh yes sir! He does resemble the Camphor merchant.
He is now fighting forcefully. Sambhuvarayars crown
has fell down. Still he is continuously swirling his
sword and he himself is fighting fiercely like a flying

shouted Madura.
Then immediately there were huge shouts of victory
and success everywhere.
Oh Hail Kampanaraya ! Long live Kampana Raya!
there was huge sound of army entering the fort
shouting slogans like this .Vallabha was very much
anxious . What to do now? Should we wait till the
army people to come and release us? Meanwhile,
if somebody tries to hurt the Pandiyan princess?
People can do anything when they are in rage of
loosing the battle.
Princess! Princess! He shouted and called Madura.
There was no response. He tried two three times
more and since he did not get any response he
started having doubts. Immediately he took his sword
and put his armour and came out of the room where
he was before.
Outside he saw a long corridor and was wondering
which way to go to find the princess room.
He moved forward and saw the place was empty
and nobody around.
After crossing two rooms he saw stairs. He quickly
climbed the steps and reached the top floor. While
he was watching the rooms on the right side he
suddenly heard a ladys moaning voice. He quickly
ran on the left in the direction of the voice and reached
a hall. What he saw there gave him a shock.
One soldier was dragging Madura after chaining her
hands. He would have escaped from the fight near
the entrance and would have come now as Vallabhan
saw his body was hurt and he had blood stains. His
face appeared that he belongs to a royal family. As
he was dragging her she was resisting and whispering.
That horrific scene made Vallabha angry, he immediately
jumped in front of him and said, Sir! Leave the princess!
The man got shocked seeing Vallabha and was very
angry.

Who are you? Why did you come here? he

threatened Vallabha.
My mouth will not answer for you and only my sword
would reply said Vallabha laughing.
The soldier also removed his sword and both had
fight for some time. The soldier was tired as he
already had been fighting near the fort and even
Vallabhan was tired as he had not eaten anything
for four days. Both were equally tired but still fought.
After few minutes, Vallabhan struck the mans chest
and he fell down. He was moaning amma! amma!
which made Vallbha feel sympathetic for him. Seeing
him crying calling his mother, Vallabha felt pity on
him and took him on his lap and called him soldier!
Soldier!
Tell my mom that I was remembering her only till
my last breath.
Who is your mom? Where is she staying? I will
definitely inform her.
She is in Paragur replied the soldier.
What is her name?
Krishnayee! Queen Krishnayee!
After hearing this Vallabha was so shocked as though
he touched the fire.
Oh Sir! What are you saying? Are you the son of
Queen Krishanyee?
Yes
What is your name Sir,!
My name is Chinna Kulasekaran! My mother loves
me so much. Tell her I remembered her a lot
Sir what is your fathers name?
My father who owned me up was Late King Veera
Bhallala and my biological father was one warrior
Kulasekaran.
The moment that word was uttered, Vallabha could
not control his tears. He immediately hugged the
brave soldier with great force . Oh brother! Did I hurt
my own brother. What an injustice! What a cruelty?
Did such a crime existed before on Earth . I am a
sinful person now. Having said this he started crying
loudly.
Readers who have already read the previous parts
of Ranganatha Travels would know who the Queen
Krishnayee was. She was Tuluva Queen. The Hoysala
king Veera Bhallala deva married her at his old age
so that his kingdom would expand upto Melaikadal
(Mangalore coast). The couple did not have any issues.
Rani Krishnayee was longing for a child . But that
was not possible through Veera Bhallala. So She
had to take a different route. Those days Thetuluva
tribe ladies had an unique practice. That was known
as Aliya Santhana Murai. According to that practice

Rani Krishnayee acquired Kulasekaran as her husband

two parts of Ranganatha travels). A male baby was
gifted for her through him. She named the boy his
fathers name itself. The soldier who had fallen in
front of Vallabha is the same boy and is the brother
of Vallabha. Vallabha hugged and cried a lot realizing
that they both were kids of the same father. The
soldier did not understand anything and was surprised
by Vallabhas reactions. When Vallabha explained
him everything even he could not control his emotions.
Then Vallabha slowly took to a stone slab and said,
Sir! I used to always think that I do not have a
brother. Now I have found you. But before even I
feel happy that I found you, I am going to lose you.
I did not know that you belong to sambuvarayas
army. Alas! I couldnt find your identity before itself.
The soldier started speaking consoling Vallabha.
Dear brother! After our family lost the country, I
thought I would join Sambuvaraya army and fight
against Sultan to recapture our country. Vallabha
now looked at him affectionately and said, Dear

also. Now What you dreamt is being achieved by

said . That was also looking as though blessing
his brother for accomplishment. After that he closed
his eyes permanently. Vallabha whispered Dvaya
mantra on his brothers ears and was weeping
continuously.
The Princess, who was watching all these came
nearer to Vallabha and said, Sir! Both of you fought
with each other unknowing the fact you are brothers
Vallabha did not even looked up at her. He was
continuously crying.
He then started talking to himself saying, I really feel
depressed now. We all need a King to protect our families
but at the same time we are losing our family to protect
them.
Meanwhile, there were noises on the streets .There
were also noises inside the fort. The Vijayanagara
army men must have entered the fort and was also
heading towards the hilltop palace where these people
were. Dutta was in front of those soldiers. They were
all shocked to see Vallabha there. Dutta rushed to
Vallabha and hugged him with joy. At the same time
Vallabha also told his Ill luck of losing his brother
to Dutta. Dutta who was also in grief tried to console
Vallabha.

LET AOL SPEARHEAD CLEAN YAMUNA

The message of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and the
theme of World Culture Festival had definitely struck a
chord in the hearts of millions of people across the
world as recognised by the endorsement of world
leaders and the media world over, said Dr M V
Soundararajan, Convenor of Temples Protection
Movement. Speaking about the recently held World
Cultural Festival by Art of Living Guru Sri Sri
Ravishankar, he said that as acknowledged by the
Prime Minister and his ministerial colleagues along
with CMs of various States; That we owe a sense of
gratitude to Guruji Sri Sri Ravishankar for choosing to
have this event in our countrys capital city as it has
enhanced the prestige of our country and reemphasised the core message of Vasudhaiva
Kutumbakam which originated in this great land of
ours as a path for peace in this world through the
emphasis on Unity in Diversity.
He also said that since the event is over it is time to
demonstrate that we are not small minded enough to
punish Guruji Sri Sri Ravishankar and his Foundation
for this noble act of conducting the festival. In this
regard, he suggested that the National Green Tribunal
needs to deliberate on the following:1. Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam principle and
magnanimity of river Yamuna Herself on whose behalf
the tribunal is hearing the case.
2. Past track record for environmental protection of Sri
Sri Guruji and Art of Living Foundation through their
work spanning several decades including efforts taken
in the past to clean river Yamuna.
3. The paramount importance of Implementation of
NGT order titled Milay se Nirmal Yamuna
Revitalisation Plan 2017 based on the Manoj Misra vs
Union of India and Others judgement for clean Yamuna.
5. The WCF2016 event itself and the media coverage
leading to it has brought into focus in an unprecedented
way the need for a clean Yamuna thus serving the
larger purpose of the Tribunal.
6. The suggestion made by the Delhi CM on the stage
of the event itself for Guruji to use his good offices and
influence with both the governments and spear head
the effort to clean Yamuna.
He appealed to the NGT on behalf of devotees to be
as magnanimous as river Yamuna Herself and to take
into account all the above points along with the
assurance of Sri Sri Guruji and the Art of Living
Foundation for doing everything in their power to clean
river Yamuna and make the Foundation morally
responsible for implementation of Milay se Nirmal
Yamuna Revitalisation Plan 2017 as shram dhan
instead of the monetary compensation proposed in
the interim order which will not serve the larger goal of
clean Yamuna.

A peoples initiative to restore a rivers glory

NGOs from four districts in western Tamil Nadu
come together to rejuvenate the Noyyal

This joint effort is unique and special. Unique as

hundreds of volunteers, businesses, educational
institutions, and non-governmental organisations from
four districts in western Tamil Nadu have come
together, special because it is to restore a river.
The Noyyal River Restoration Federation, which
includes Siruthuli in Coimbatore, Jeeva Nadhi Noyyal
in Tirupur, Olirum Erodu in Erode and Noyyal Kaappom
in Karur, will launch here on March 26, Noyyalai Nokki
(Towards Noyyal), a peoples initiative to restore the
Noyyal river system, jointly with the government. Social
activist Anna Hazare will launch the project at
Kooduthurai in Alandurai in Coimbatore district.
The river originates in the Western Ghats and runs
through the four districts to join the Cauvery at Noyyal
village. As many as 34 streams feed water into it and
the river system includes 21 anaicuts and 31 tanks.
Although the river is commonly known as a jungle
stream, in the 1940s it carried water throughout the
year and would flood twice or thrice a year, recollects
81-year-old Su. Ra. Thangavel, former president of
Sulur town panchayat.
Now, just four or five streams that originate in the
Western Ghats feed the river, says C.R. Swaminathan,
chairman, Noyyal River Restoration Federation. In
many places, the river is encroached upon, sewage is
let into it, or the river needs to be desilted. What was
once a 60-foot to 300-foot wide water body is now dry
in many locations or has just a sewage stream.
Yet, for many like Mr. Thangavelu, there are cherished
memories of the river. He recalls how, when he was in
his teens, he would go regularly to the Sulur tank in
Coimbatore for a bath. Women too would go to the
tank in the evenings to bring home drinking water from
a well nearby. Sulur tank is one of the 31 tanks that is
part of the Noyyal river system.
The river is all set to regain its glory with the Noyyalai
Nokki initiative. We need to survey the streams and
the river, remove the encroachments, create alternative
channels to carry the water, desilt, and strengthen the
bunds along the river, says Vanitha Mohan, Managing
Trustee, Siruthuli. Sewage treatment plants need to
be installed and people should be involved at the
village level to restore the river and sustain it, she says.
What is encouraging is the willingness of the public to
be part of it. Members of Siruthuli have been going to
villages for the last 10 days to create awareness. If
people see the river cleaned up and start using it, the
initiative will become sustainable, she says.
We need the support of the Central and State
governments too, adds Mr. Swaminathan. The Public
Works Department had prepared a project four years
ago to restore the river and to set up sewage treatment
plants. The project cost then was estimated at Rs.
650 crore.
However, only after completing a survey, in about six
months, can the project cost be finalised, they say. It is
proposed to divide the river into segments of 500

Rs. 313 cr. to restore 524 tanks

Padmakshi tank in Warangal being revived at a
cost of Rs. 90 lakh: Harish
The State government has released Rs. 313 crore to
restore 524 tanks across the district, said Irrigation
Minister T Harish Rao here on Thursday.
Taking part in desiltation work of Padmakshi tank in
Hanamkonda, he said it was decided to revive the
Padmakshi tank with an estimate of Rs. 90.82 lakh.
The State government in the first phase of Mission
Kakatiya had spent Rs. 418 crore to revive 1,075 tanks.
Majority of tanks in Narasampet, Dornakal, Mulug,
Bhupalpally mandal were now holding more water than
earlier.
The Minister said of all the projects under Green
Climate, the flagship programme of Telangana
government Mission Kakatiya was selected for
funding and it would receive Rs. 2,000 crore grant soon.
The revival of tanks would increase water holding
capacity of the tanks besides help improve the ground
water level. The defunct borewells would be revived.
Apart from focusing on tanks in rural areas, it was also
decided to pay attention to water bodies in urban areas.
The ancient Padmakshi tank would also receive further
funding under Hriday scheme and it would be turned
into a tourist spot. It was a known venue for Batukamma
festival and it would be developed excellently.
District Collector Vakati Karuna said in tri-cities of
Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet there are 41 tanks
of which 16 have been identified for development and
funds were released.
MLAs D Vinay Bhaskar, T Rajaiah, M Yadagiri Reddy,
Mayor N Narender, MLA B Venkateswarlu and others
were present.

Court issues summons to officials over
pollution of lakes in Bengaluru
In a first, the top brass of the Bangalore Water Supply
and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), often in the dock for letting sewage into the citys lakes, is being held accountable. A city court has found prima facie case against it
under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act,
1974.
The incumbent BWSSB Chairman, T.M. Vijaya Bhaskar,
two former chairmen, Anjum Parvez and Ravishankar,
and 10 engineering staff, will face legal proceedings for
letting sewage into the Hulimavu, Madiwala and Arakere
lakes. If found guilty, they may face a prison term.
The V Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM)
Court, hearing a private complaint filed by the Karnataka
State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), ordered the registration of the case, and issued summons. The chair-

man and other heads were supposed to file their reply

on March 22. However, the agency has sought more time.
The case has been adjourned to June.
The KSPCB filed the case in 2015, following a complaint
by Wing Commander (retd.) G.B. Atri, who is leading a
watchdog committee of the three lakes, formed by the
KSPCB in partnership with local residents. It is criminal
of BWSSB, which is duty-bound to protect the lakes, to be
the biggest polluter. Ironically, BWSSB chairman is also
an ex-officio member of KSPCB, said the retired Wing
Commander.
KSPCB had issued several notices, asking the BWSSB
to stop letting sewage into these lakes, in 2014, copies
of which are available with The Hindu . When all else
failed, KSPCB went ahead with the criminal suit, said a
senior official.
Even as Mr. Lakshman, chairman, KSPCB, said the Board
would aggressively pursue the case to hold the top brass
of BWSSB accountable for the first time, Mr. Vijay Bhaskar
said the setting up of sewage treatment plants (STP)
was a larger systemic issue that needed government
investment. We will defend the agency in the court
through legal means, he said.
However, its not just the lack of STPs that has ruined the
three lakes. An STP on the bed of Madiwala lake has
become dysfunctional. BWSSB has now handed over
the dysfunctional STP to the Lake Development Authority
(LDA). The drainage line of the BWSSB in the area is
leaking, letting the sewage in the lake seep in through
the wetlands, Mr. Atri said. (The Hindu 26.3.2016)
NOYYAL RESTORATION BEGINS
It was a festive occasion at Kooduthurai (Alandurai) near
the foothills of the Western Ghats, here on Saturday
evening.
Hundreds gathered for the launch of Noyyalai Nokki , a
peoples initiative to restore the 160-km long river.
The river originates in the Western Ghats and passes
through Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, and Karur districts
to join the Cauvery at Noyyal village.
I want to come after two years to see the Noyyal restored,
said social activist Anna Hazare at the launch function. It
is important to focus on conservation of land and water
resources for development, he said.
Earlier, he told reporters that linking of rivers was good if
it was done scientifically. It was important to plan water
management, conserve natural resources, take up
rainwater harvesting and restore rivers.
Actor Suriya, who participated at the inaugural of Noyyalai
Nokki , said the confidence of the people gathered in
restoring the river gave hope for restoration of more rivers
across the State. It was necessary to take up such projects
and conserve water bodies for the benefit of the future
generations.
According to Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of
Siruthuli, it was a joint project by the public to restore the
river.
C.R. Swaminathan, chairman of Noyyal River Restoration
Federation, said the project would be implemented on
divide-distribute-develop model by forming committees
for every 500 metres of the river. Volunteers, educational
institutions, non-governmental organisations and the
government will be involved. To begin with, a survey of
the river would be taken up and an estimate of the project
would be prepared. Steps would be taken to install

sewage treatment plants to prevent waste water from

entering the river, said S.V. Balasubramaniam, chairman
of Siruthuli.

On an endeavor to make our village clean and free from plastic, to avoid spread of diseases and
make our surroundings beautiful, the Gandipet Welfare Association volunteers and Gandipet Sarpanch
Mr.Prashanth has taken an initiative to implement Waste Management Program in Gandipet Village.
The following efforts were implemented for our Waste Management Program to be efficient and sustainable.
1. Plastic Storage Room for segregation and storage of plastic waste is already constructed
at the selected Government dump area.
2. Tie up with ITC to manage the DRY waste and partners would collect the plastic waste
on regular basis once it weighs one ton.
3. Composting Shed for composting the kitchen and garden waste separately, building Composting
Shed and composting areas, buying shredder to cut waste into small pieces, buying cart for
transporting the waste.
4. Tie up with Waste Ventures India (WVI) private organization to manage the WET waste,
WVI will compose the organic waste, maintain the composting shed, produce fine quality of
composting material and return 50% back for garden.
To maintain this sustainable system, the cost is shared across the Gandipet Village communities.
To support the village in implementing this program to make Gandipet clean and plastic free:
1.
Planning to provide a garbage collection electric auto
2.
Provided Dry and Wet waste bins to each house hold
Lets all work towards waste management program collectively to make our communities, surroundings
cleaner and healthier for all of us and for the future generations.
Yours Sincerely,

LAKES
Hundreds of lakes were created by the Kakatiya rulers in the dry Deccan Plateau. The lakes are magnificent
examples of irrigation from the 11th century AD. Hundreds of such lakes exist and are in use even today.
The lakes were constructed under the 'Dashabanda cheruvu' system, where the farmers contributed a
tenth of their incomes for the construction of the lakes. A lake was created and adjacent to the lake a
beautiful temple was built. A small town like Nirmal in Adilabad district has 24 lakes and tanks. Hyderabad
and its surroundings had at least 50 lakes. Most of them had been encroached upon.

TAX DEDUCTION MIRACLE...

P^ # K=`~O...

It was 28th January 2016 and I as Chairman

Managing Committee of Chilkur Balaji Temple drafted a
letter to Chief Commissioner Income Tax to ensure that
a clarification is given to banks as per Sec 10(23BBA) of
Income Tax Act so that tax is not deducted at source on
interest of the Daily Puja Fund.
The savings runs into lakhs of rupees per
annum and there is also the matter of refund for the
wrongful deductions done in the past. I was in the process
of making plans to visit the Income Tax department to
deliver the letter personally to the concerned officials;
miraculously a high official belonging to the Income Tax
department came to the temple on 28th January 2016
as a devotee. He had made a plan to come to the temple
accompanying his mother at the very last minute instead
of his sister who was to come with her. I gave the letter
addressed to the Income Tax department to him and
requested him to personally ensure quick action. To my
surprise the Income Tax Department responded in record
time and gave the clarification through letter dated 10th
Feb 2016 without any further follow up. I wonder at the
mysterious ways in which Lord Chilkur Balaji works and
How he ensured that the devotee belonging to the
Income Tax department came to the temple and to collect
the letter and got His work done without any effort from
the Managing Committee.
