Lesson Title: Tic Tac Toe (2 day lesson)

Grade and Subject:6th

Date: November 20th, 2015
1. Overview, Background & Rationale For Lesson Plan
Overview
Abstract
This lesson will be taught to a group of 6th grade math students that are
consider talented and gifted. I will use project based learning as well as
group strategies to engage the students in the lesson. Students will be
assessed based on their growth from pre-assessment, their letters to your
teacher assignment, and their overall tic-tac toe menu activity.
Background,
Culture and
The students engaged in this lesson are typically ahead of the other classes.
Context
So they have more time and room for projects and activities versus the time
being spent assisting them with comprehending the lessons and standards.
The students are very social, so giving them the option to work with partners
should limit the amount of socialization unrelated to math. A lot of the
students are natural born leaders with strong personalities. This led me to the
conclusion that this activity is perfect for them because for me it is considered
a choice skillfully managed by the teacher. I give the students options without
really giving them an option. So they feel like they are somewhat in control
because they are not limited or forced to do only one assignment nor the
same one as everyone else in the class. This lesson should take the entire
50 minutes of the class, any work that is not completed students have an
option to finish it for homework. I am not big on giving homework unless
students truly need it or want extra practice to take home. However, if an
extra day is needed to cover this lesson plan we will plan accordingly.
Rationale
I choose to do this lesson a different way because I have noticed that more
than 70% of our students do not realize the real benefit of concept maps,
especially within math. I also wanted to choose a concept map that may
incorporate a little bit of math that would require students to think about prior
knowledge or possibly knowledge to be gain. Students may rely on the prior
knowledge and lessons to actually understand what is going on in future
lessons. Also students enjoy games, tic tac toe being one while the actual
activities may consist of other games.

2. Lesson Plan Learning Outcomes And Procedure

Can we use concept maps in mathematics? How?

Objective(s)

Students show that they understand that concept maps can be used
in math and not just other subject areas.
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of writing, reading, and

evaluating numerical expressions involving whole number exponents.

Students will demonstrate their knowledge of writing, reading, and
evaluating expressions in which letters stand for number.

MGSE6.EE.1 Write and evaluate numerical expressions

involving whole-number exponents.
MGSE6.EE.2 Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which
letters stand for numbers.
MGSE6.EE.2a Write expressions that record operations with
numbers and with letters standing for numbers. For example,
express the calculation Subtract y from 5 as 5 .
MGSE6.EE.2b Identify parts of an expression using
mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient,
coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as a
single entity. For example, describe the expression 2(8 + 7) as
a product of two factors; view (8 + 7) as both a single entity
and a sum of two terms.
For our hook of engagement I will have students watch two short videos. The
first video will be over numerical expression and the second video with be
over concept mapping.
Following our hook the introduction will be a short discussion about the video.
I would like to ask the students the following questions:
How did you guys like the video?
What did you learn and take from the video?
How do you think you will benefit from the video?
After our discussion, the students will be given a concept map. The concept
map that they will be given will be The Tic-Tac Toe Menu. The students will be
required to choose three activities in a tic-tac toe design. Once they have
chosen their activities the students will be grouped in groups of fours. The
students are not required to work in groups. However the purpose of the
grouping is so students can collaborate and help each other when help is
needed. This will be a teacher monitored activity, both teachers will walk
around to assist students where help is needed.
( A tic-tac toe menu with the activities will be attached)
During the last five minutes of class students will conclude class with a letter
to my teacher. This is an assessment tool that I created that will require
students to write to their teacher(s) how effective the lesson was for them.
This will be an opportunity for the students to ask for additional help on things
they are still unclear about.

Students can choose if they want to work with a partner or individually the

Vocabulary

Students are expected to use proper mathematical terms during the group
discussions while helping their peers. Students are also expected to know all
vocabulary words and explain them when necessary.
Students will demonstrate their understanding of vocabulary by choosing at
least one of the activities thats involved in using their vocabulary.

Orders of Operations
Equation
Example may be activity number two where the students are required to use
all vocabulary words in at least one to two sentences each.
