Philosophy and Beliefs Paper
April 27, 2015

My philosophy and beliefs for the role of the educator are to

abide by the Code of Ethical Conduct. Teachers should be familiar with
the knowledge of early childhood care; and should stay up to date with
their information about children as they continue with an educational
practice. The role of the teacher is also creating a safe and nurturing
environment for all children. Every child should be recognized and
respected. In addition all needs should be met physically, emotionally,
socially, and cognitively. As a teacher there are professional standards
that must be followed such as having respectful relationships with coworkers and abiding by confidentiality rules. My role of the teacher is
to provide future programs with the highest quality of service and to
abide by the programs policies at all times.
Learning and teaching requires teachers to be knowledgeable in
their subject areas to properly teach children. If this is true then
children will be able to understand what is being taught. Teachers and
children should have a trusting relationship. When children gain a
sense of security it is then easier for them to learn. Putting learning in
the center of the classroom is very important not only for the program
but also for the children in order for them to have successful learning
outcomes, which is what the teacher strives for everyday. Teachers
should observe each of their students in order to know how each
student learns best. Learning and teaching are to also have an open

classroom meaning, when teaching students should feel comfortable to

ask questions, and speak up when they dont understand something
because the social interactions while learning helps children the most.
Learning and teaching go together best when every individual is
working together and everyone feels safe and comfortable in the
learning environment.
The role of relationships between the teacher and children are to
always recognize and respect everyone that is in the classroom. In
order for teachers and children to build that strong relationship they
must first feel secure in their environment meaning, that teachers
must provide a safe and healthy environment for all children. Every
child should see their culture, family structure, and ethnicity in the
program and classroom in order to build that respectful relationship
between the teacher and the children. The role of the relationships
between teacher and children are for them both to feel comfortable
enough with each other that they can communicate effectively with
one another daily. Communication is one of the most important
relationship builders for the teachers and the childrens relationships.
The role and relationships of teacher, teacher assistant,
parent/guardian, and director would be that everyone must work
together in order to build those strong, respected partnerships. The
teacher and the teachers assistant must always be on the same page,
they should recognize and respect one anothers knowledge and

expertise in order to provide the children with the best care and
education. There should be a strong understanding of confidentiality
between the teacher and the teachers assistant in their classroom in
order to build that relationship they must first trust one another. The
role and relationships of the teacher and the parent/guardian is very
important because that is important to the children and that
relationship also helps build up the program. The teachers and the
parents must share information daily through two-way communication
in order to build their partnership. Teachers and parents must know the
role that each one plays in the childrens lives and that they should
both try their best to share their power and decision making with one
another. In addition to build that strong teacher and parent relationship
acknowledging and respecting diversity of each other must come first.
In a family-centered care program everyone must feel that they are
welcomed and appreciated as they are. The role and relationships of
the teacher and director is for their relationship to be trusted and
respected at all times. Together they should both share their
knowledge and resources with each other in order to build their
program. The teacher and the director should support one another and
recognize all of their professional achievements. In each program these
relationships between the teacher, teacher assistant, parent/guardian,
and director must all be recognized and respected in order for the

children to feel comfortable in their learning environment because

those relationships play a big role in influencing their education.
In a classroom the role of the child is to come into the classroom
environment full of curiosity and eagerness to learn and explore.
During these early childhood years children gain the knowledge and
skills needed to provide them the foundation for later learning. Young
children learn many of these skills through their interactions that are
shared between their educators and peers. Children should be guided
in a way that leads them to success and independence. Children
should be given guidance that will support their development, learning,
and behaviors. When a child comes into a classroom it is their role to
take and use what the educator has taught them. In addition children
will learn their expected behavior in a classroom setting when they see
their teacher modeling these behaviors appropriately. Teaching
children to solve their own problems when they occur and guiding
them to understand behavior that is acceptable in a classroom
environment is a role that I have set to pursue. Once the children have
this knowledge it is then their role to take these lessons and use them
in situations that may be leading factors to problem behaviors and
conflicts. However, it is essential for educators to prepare a child to use
the six steps in conflict resolution for them to successfully solve their
own problems. The role of the child in the classroom relies on their

behavior that they bring into a classroom setting and their tools they
use to properly solve their problems and conflicts.
The learning environment influences a childs development and
learning as well as their behavior and guidance, majorly. In the learning
environment the physical and programmatic areas of a classroom are
essentially important for young children. These areas of the learning
environment should be well thought out and organized to effectively
support the childrens learning and to prevent fewer discipline
problems. When a positive learning environment is created then more
opportunitites for children to feel safe and supported are enhanced.
Schedules for young children are very important in a learning
environment. Schedules help children in learning what will happen next
throughout their day. Children need those schedules because this is
another way for them to gain trust in their educators. In addition
schedules should be consistent with very little change; children need
the same things happening everyday in order for them to gain an
understanding of how a proper schedule works. If schedules are
changed quite often this can then lead to behavioral problems in the
learning environment, as well as emotional problems because of the
inconsistency. Daily schedules should meet the needs of each and
every individual in the learning environment. Educators can see when
these schedules are not working and need some adjusting, which is
one of the educators jobs so that these changes can be adapted to

better provide the children with the care they need. Materials and
equipment is another factor of the learning environment that plays a
role in childrens behavior and guidance. Learning materials and
equipment should be child-sized and accessible to everyone in the
classroom. Equal amounts of materials should be provided to promote
a fair learning environment. An unequal amount of learning materials
can cause behavioral and guidance problems in the learning
environment. Materials should be in labeled containers that are
accessible for every child in the classroom, and with these labeled
materials children will develop their sense of independence when they
see that they are able to get and return their own materials in the
correct places. The learning environment is very important when
considering childrens development because their behavior and
guidance outcomes depend deeply on an effective learning
environment.
One of the many roles of an educator is to be a positive guidance
counselor for the children. The general focus for teachers is to provide
a safe, secure, and nurturing climate for the children. The relationship
between the teacher and the children has a major influence on the
childrens behaviors. The teachers role is to assist children with their
learning, as well as their social and emotional needs. Teachers should
come into the learning environment with open ears and eyes, meaning
at all time teachers should be there for the children in their care

because they are the ones that are responsible for the secure
foundation in a childs development process. Teachers should positively
guide children to success by laying out what is expected from the
children first hand. If rules or limits are inquired in the classroom
environment, then children should be aware so that they have success
in the learning environment. If certain behaviors are expected then
educators should make these behaviors known, and these behaviors
should be modeled in the correct manner so the children can learn
from their teachers actions. In my future classroom I will work with the
children in my care in a way that they are only aimed for success. My
limits and expected behaviors will be laid out and explained to the
children in a way that they understand them. I will model these
behaviors at all times in my classroom environment, and I feel that is
one of the most important and effective steps in becoming a positive
guidance counselor for the children in your care.
No matter how effective we teach positive behavior, children will
still sometimes misbehave. Misbehaving for children is a natural part of
development and often occurs in the classroom setting, because they
feel that here is when they will receive the most attention. The role of
the teacher as an interventionist is to know each child in your care
effectively. If educators know everyone in their care then they know
when and who presents misbehavior the most. Teachers as an
interventionist should plan curriculum accordingly. Curriculum should

be planned to support each an every child in the classroom and should

take a child from where they are to the next level in their development
process. Teachers should intervene in the classroom on a daily basis. If
misbehavior occurs then I do believe it is the teachers responsibility to
intervene. If the conflict is not resolved in the correct manner then an
intervention with those children would be necessary. In my future
classroom I plan to educate the children in my care on how they can
successfully solve their own problems. In addition if misbehavior does
occur and it cannot be handled with out assistance then I will intervene
by restating the six steps in conflict resolution, and I will work towards
finding a solution for the misbehavior.
Guidance is done throughout each and every day, not just when
a child misbehaves or acts in a way that is unsafe and unacceptable.
My view on guidance has changed tremendously since I have
embarked on my Early Childhood Education journey. Guidance in a
classroom setting is essentially important. I once thought guidance
relied on strict rules only, which I have now found out that guidance, is
everything but strict rules. Yes, rules and limits are necessary within
the classroom because I have learned that children feel more secure if
they know what behavior is accepted and what behavior is
unacceptable. I do believe that once children in our care understand
our rules and limits of the classroom then they will be geared more
towards success. Guidance in my terms relies on educators modeling

the appropriate behaviors expected. I feel that as an educator we

should be the models that the children in our care need so that they
can have a visual view as to what is expected in the classroom setting.
Positive guidance offers choices. I feel that children should have these
choices so that they will be able to have control over their own
behaviors, show respect to their peers, and strengthen their
independence. I have changed my views on guidance because I now
know the proper way to eliminate conflicts. When we are guiding
children we are giving them the support that they need to become
independent. Independence relies greatly on children becoming their
own problem solvers. I have changed my views on how problems and
conflicts are solved. Appropriate guidance isnt going to time out if
there is a conflict, proper guidance is allowing children to use the six
steps in conflict resolution and solving problems their own problems.
Guidance should be positive and reinforced on a daily basis in the
correct manner.
