The concerto is here examined decade by decade. This vast project remains under
wraps but it will cover the last of the romantics (Elgar and Rachmaninov); the
neoclassical (Stravinsky and Poulenc); the jazz age; the English renaissance
(Vaughan Williams, Walton, Tippett); the Soviet realists (Shostakovitch and Prokofiev);
the modernists and the traditionalists. From France to Russia and to the Americas
covering a variety of solo instruments. The series will be followed by the first
performance of the Flute Concerto of Matthew Taylor on Saturday 6 December in the
Great Hall.
