Lesson Plan: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs

Standards:
1.1.A Describe the harmful short-and long-term effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs,
including steroids, performance enhancing drugs and inhalants.
Objectives:
Upon completion of the lesson the learner will be able to describe the harmful effects of drugs on
the human body: one short-term and one long-term effect.
Anticipatory Set: 4-5 minutes
To start the lesson the teacher will begin the lesson with a comic transparency.

Guided Practice: 10 minutes
1.Selectavolunteertoreadashortstoryorpoemtotheclass.(Mostofthestudentswillbeable
tounderstandthepassage).
2.Now,havethevolunteerplaceajumbomarshmallowinhis/hermouthandreadaloudthe
samepassage.
3.Askstudentstocommentonthedifferencesinthereadings.(Relatethisasanexampleofhow
apersonwhodrinkstoomuchalcoholmightsoundduetolossofmusclecontrol/coordination).

4.Pairsrepeattheexerciseanddiscusstheresults.
5.Continuinginpairs,studentswilldescribeoneshorttermandonelongtermeffectthat
alcohol,tobacco,andotherdrugshasonthehumanbody.Eachpairwillsharetheirdescriptions
withtheentireclass.
Closure: 3-5 minutes

Independent Practice:
Homework will be assigned to the students as independent practice. Teacher will hand out home
worksheet and explain assignment. Students will write an essay and include one short-term and
on long-term effect of: alcohol, tobacco, steroids, or inhalants. Minimum paragraphs is four:
1) Introduction to drug (pick one to write about):
2) Short-term effects
3) Long-term effects
4) Conclusion
Must include a reference/source page.

Evaluation Methods: 10 minutes


8 Question M/C Quiz: 2 question for each category; alcohol, tobacco, steroids, and inhalants
(one short-term & one long-term effect).

Materials:
Computer, Display Monitor/Screen, Streaming Ability-Internet Access, Comic Transparency,
PowerPoint Presentation, Jumbo Marshmallows, Homework Handout, Quiz.

Time: 45 minutes
