Subject _English/Language Arts_________________

Grade __K Tier 3 Small Group___

Rationale for lesson:

Students in the Tier 3 group are focusing on phonemic awareness skills. We are using the
StarLIT kit as per the Reading Coach. We are targeting the skill of students being able to
segment names into syllables.
Learning outcomes/objectives:
Increasing the students ability to recognize that words are made up of syllables.
Assessment of student outcomes:
The students will demonstrate how to count the number of syllables in a word using names. I
will observe each student to see if they are recognizing the syllables individually.
Related Foundations/Indiana? Academic Standard:

K.RF.1 Understand and apply knowledge of print concepts, phonics, phonemic

awareness, vocabulary, and fluency and comprehension as a foundation for developing
reading skills
K.RF.3.2
Orally pronounce, blend, and segment words into syllables

Materials Needed:
StarLIT kit wolf puppet
Lesson/Activity Presentation:
Anticipatory set:
Have students come in and sit on the carpet on the circles I placed on the floor.
Remind students of ticket system and how they earn tickets. Give them time to count their
tickets before beginning the lesson. Remind students about how they Give Me 5: ears listening,
eyes watching, voices quiet, feet still, sitting on pockets. Introduce the puppet: Wally Wolf and

demonstrate to students how to make their hands talk like the puppet. Wally Wolf has a funny
way of saying names. Lets listen to Wally say the name Jason.
Teaching procedures:
Use the puppet to draw out the two syllables in Ja-son. Did you hear that? Wally
broke the name Jason into two parts. Listen to him again: Ja-son (move puppets mouth slowly to
draw out the two syllables. Model: Wally wants to say my name. Wally, my name is Mrs.
White. Can you say my name? Miss-es White, draw out syllables and repeat again. Wally says
my name in his special way. Wally says my name in sound units. The sound units are called
syllables. (Put puppet aside) I will say my name in syllables the way Wally says it As I say the
syllables, I clap my hands for each syllable. Watch me: Miss-es White (clap three times). How
many times did I clap? I clapped 3 times. That means I have three syllables in my name. Lets
see how Wally says your names? Choose a child to go first.
Guided & independent practice:
Lets use our puppet hands. Wally will listen as we say our names for him.
Remember, Wally says a name in syllables. Watch each student as they count the syllables in
each others names. Make your puppets mouth move slowly as you say the name in parts. I will
do it with you. Now, lets clap the part of the names. How many times did we clap? Lets say
another name. Give students a chance to say their names and use their puppet hands and
clapping. Can you think of another name?
Closure:
Tell students when our time is up and have them go back to the table to count
their tickets. If they have 10 tickets, then let them have a trip to the treasure box or candy bear.
Have students line up in order according to who is the line leader for the day and lead them back
to their classrooms.
Differentiated instruction:
Give each student a chance to count syllables in their names. Check for understanding
with each student. Provide more guidance for those who need it.
