1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)

Fantasy: All kids will be obedient and attentive

Reality: Kids are all drastically different and you have to appeal to all learning types. Its like a
juggling act to control all the styles of learning and teaching. Its emotionally exhausting but you
have to love the circus.

2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?

He has a Masters in education from Baylor

CCISD provides general education in-service days that provide enrichment periodically

He also keeps up with acting techniques by doing professional jobs outside of school

3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.

A theatre teachers job depends on the time of year.

In the Fall, he does more teaching, but the Spring is full of shows.
In the Spring, he usually critiques and supervises student produced shows

4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?

Pretty secure in his job because the shows we perform arent risque and we try to appeal to
families to keep the money in the department alive.

In the 1990s the starting salary for a teacher is $27,000

Now a teacher can start at $50,000

6. What potential for growth is there in your field?

Moving up depends on the potential of your department

Ranks: teacher -> head of department -> administration -> district head

7. What is your favorite part of your job?

Seeing the kids complete a production and be proud of it

o This is usual and is disheartening when it doesnt happen
Enjoy the journey more than the destination

8. What is the most difficult part of your job?

So many responsibilities
Not being able to teach as much as he would want to
Need more helpers
So many shows, not enough time

9. Do you like working with younger or older kids? Why?

Started with junior high kids

Older kids get more stress and knowledge
Junior high has more enthusiasm and energy but you sacrifice high quality

Older kids get distracted and get so much more from life experience and maturity

10. How is a theatrical job different than any other kind?

No black and white; no clear goals and guidelines
