Media Production Unit Plan

1. Essential question. This is a

problem, issue, or challenge you
pose to students. It should have a
combination of coherence,
complexity, legibility, and mystery.

Pottery is an art form that has evolved over many

centuries. Although it has evolved over time, many of the
techniques used to make pottery have been adapted into
our culture of pottery making today. In a group, explore
how you can create a video that explains the history of
pottery by using drawings to aid with your explanation that
you speed up to 4x, includes elements of spoken
explanation, and allows for different camera
arrangements for an interesting video.

2. Related SOLs. Start in your

discipline -- need minimum of 1
SOL. May expand to other
disciplines if appropriate.

8.6 The student will communicate ideas, experiences, and

narratives through the creation of original works of art,
using selected media.
8.7 The student will independently make ethical decisions
in art making.
8.12 The student will describe how works of art are
influenced by social, political, and economic factors.
8.13 The student will compare and contrast works of art
according to medium, period, style, and artist.
8.14 The student will identify the roles of artists in society.
8.21 The student will describe and justify personal
responses to visual qualities in works of art.
8.22 The student will formulate a definition of aesthetics as
related to art.

3. Project [requires the

application of knowledge and/or
skills acquired during the unit]

To create a video that explains the history of pottery in

different cultures by using drawings to aid with your
explanation that you speed up to 4x, includes elements of
spoken explanation, and allows for different camera
arrangements for an interesting video.

Activities Title and brief description of the activities for each step below.
Instructional Step

Create a video that explains the history of pottery in different

cultures by using drawings to aid with your explanation that

you speed up to 4x, includes elements of spoken explanation,
and allows for different camera arrangements for an
interesting video.
Engage

This activity will begin by reviewing the information the

students already know about pottery. I will present questions
to them that question their knowledge of how pottery is used in
our daily lives.

Explore

After presentation of this question, the students will get into

groups of two to discuss what different things they already
know, what they dont know, and what they want to know
about the history of pottery and its relation to different cultures.

Present Content

Here I will show the students a video in relation to the history

of pottery and how the techniques vary from culture to culture.
They will also be shown how we have adapted many of these
techniques into our pottery culture today. The students will be
shown different images that go along with this. In the groups of
two, I will give differentiated reading materials for them to go
over and identify key elements of information within that they
can use in their video.

Explain

After presentation of the content, I will show a video that was

done for the project in years past as an example. I will go
through step-by-step and explain to them different ways to edit
a video using a program on the computer such as Movie
Editor.

Guided Practice

Here the students will go to the library and work in their

assigned groups of two to complete a video on a program on
the computer such as Movie Editor. Here the students will take
the information that they have learned in my lecture on how to
create a movie and create their own. As they are creating their
projects, I will be present in the library walking around to assist
and guide the students in the right direction when they run into
a problem.

Check for Understanding

As the students are completing their video, I will walk around

the library during their final edits on the video to examine and
see how the students are doing with the project.

Elaborate

Students will now explore the different successful animation

videos that have been made by different students in other
schools across the country. They will watch the videos and
write down the successes of the videos before completion of
their own videos. Here the question that will be asked is,
What are the successes and failures of your video and the
videos you viewed? What can you do to make your video even

better?
Independent Practice

The students will now be given the specific task of completing

their own individual animation video without the help of a
partner. They will be required to complete a video that shows
the process and completion of one of their own ceramic
pieces.

Evaluate

As the products of the assignment are completed we will

share them with the class as a whole, go around to critique,
and elaborate on the reasons for why we completed our video
in the way that we did.

Closure

For a final project, the students will finalize their edits of their
individual video projects, and they will upload them to the
YouTube channel so we can all watch them as a class to
critique and evaluate.

Assessment of Growth Identify and describe how you will know that students grew as a result
of work and experience through the unit.
I will assess the learning of each student by the participation they have had in the
assignments and projects that I have assigned. I will also create one last final closure project
to better help with the assessment of the learning the children obtained. This project will be to
create a paragraph that explains to me everything they have learned about the history of
pottery, the creation of a video, editing of a video, different techniques in pottery, and how to
assess whether a piece was successful or not. By completing this project it will allow me to
know at what level of understanding the children have on the history of pottery and the
different techniques used in various cultures by the creation of their own explanation. The
statement will be required to be written on Google Docs where the students can help
collaborate and edit each others statements.

for students.
