English 10: Honors World Literature
The University of Maryland
Founded in 1856 by a simple group of planters, The University of Maryland has grown
from focusing only on agriculture to offering some of the most highly regarded courses in the
nation. Located in College Park, MD, the main campus is just a few miles from the nation’s
capital. One of the college’s most esteemed programs is its Criminology and Criminal Justice
Department. In addition to this, the university offers a variety of other successful and respected
courses. The University of Maryland best prepares one for a successful post-baccalaureate life
because of its outstanding criminology curriculum, its prestigious business courses, and its
nationally respected extracurricular programs.
Firstly, the University of Maryland best prepares one for a successful post-baccalaureate
life because of its outstanding criminology curriculum. Criminology courses “combine
principles of sociology, law and psychology to prepare students to deal with criminals,
understand the justice system and work to prevent crime” (usnews.com 1). Among all other
schools in the nation, the University of Maryland stands alone at the top, with a comfortable lead
even on the nation’s most prestigious schools. The school’s CCJS (Criminology and Criminal
Justice) Department is recognized as one of the best in the country, and the professors are wellrespected. During the course, “CCJS faculty and students develop and test strategies to reduce
crime, especially by conducting field experiments” (umd.edu 2). Because of the school’s close
location to D.C., home of the FBI Headquarters and other important law-enforcement agencies,
students receive a glimpse of what they hope their futures entail. The close proximity to the city

also allows for a strong alumni network, with connections that will help students make the most
of their futures in Law and Law Enforcement.
In addition, the University of Maryland best prepares one for a successful postbaccalaureate life because of its prestigious Business Program. The university’s Economics
Department “ranked in the top 20 economics programs in the country in the most recent National
Academy of Sciences study” (umd.edu 1). Because many students end up realizing the course
they selected may not be for them, this program offers a promising option for a major. The
courses offered prepare one for a successful future in multiple fields of business. However, this
program also serves as a smart choice for a Minor if the student prefers to stay with the Major
that they select. Not only will these classes prepare a student for a successful financial future,
but also allow them to develop other important life-skills. Academic Minor Courses offered by
the University of Maryland include Business Analytics, General Business, and Innovation &
Entrepreneurship.
Finally, the University of Maryland best prepares one for post-baccalaureate life because
of its nationally respected extracurricular activities. The Maryland Terrapins typically end the
season as one of the top teams in Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, and both the school’s Men’s and
Women’s Basketball teams tend to do well in their leagues. Also, in their history Maryland’s
football team won the NCAA Championship and nine ACC Championships, among other
impressive accomplishments. In all, “Eight Terrapin programs have combined to win a total of
42 national championships for the University of Maryland” (umterps.com 2). Maryland’s home
stadium continues to serve productive years for the Terrapins. In fact, “Capital One Field at
Byrd Stadium, nestled in the corner of the University of Maryland's campus, has been home to
national championship football and men's and women's lacrosse teams, and to more than 50 ACC

track and field champions” (umterps.com 1). This stadium and these sports strengthen the bond
among the students who attend Maryland. The connection founded on the teams and carried up
through the faculty and students leads all on their way to meeting people they would not have
met otherwise, giving new skills and relationships a chance to develop.
As can be seen, the University of Maryland best prepares one for a successful postbaccalaureate life because of its outstanding criminology curriculum, its prestigious business
courses, and its nationally respected extracurricular programs. It offers a premier education for
the future’s leaders on very important matters. It also provides courses and opportunities to help
one develop important life skills. The university grants a strong sense of community among
those on campus thanks to the sports teams. Because of its close proximity to the Capital,
students are given opportunities unlike any they would find at another school. A place like the
University of Maryland is unique, and is a prime location for a student to spend, what many call,
the best years of one’s life.
