Almost two centuries ago, a prestigious school came into existence with its founder John
Carrol. Some may say that with old age comes beauty, and this is definitely the case for
Georgetown University, which serves as the oldest Catholic and Jesuit College in the United
States. Throughout the years, Georgetown rose through the ranks to become one of the top
schools in the nation. Georgetown University sets one up for success in post-secondary because
it is one of the oldest and most reputable universities in the United States of America, it
possesses a highly desirable location due to its proximity to the nation’s capital, and it offers
credible programs ranging from business to law.
Georgetown University sets one up for success in post-secondary life because it is one of
the oldest and most reputable universities in the United States. Founded in 1789, by John Carrol,
the building of Georgetown coincides with the birth of our nation. The school witnessed wars
commence and end, surviving through it all. “The Civil War nearly closed Georgetown, as the
student body dropped from 313 to 17 between 1859 and 1861. A total of 1,141 students and
alumni enlisted in war, serving in both the Union and Confederate forces” (Georgetown History
1). Georgetown has a legacy of success, always possessing a high rating. It is the oldest Catholic
and Jesuit Institution in the nation. With an acceptance rate of 16.4 percent, it remains as a highly
prestigious school. Georgetown owns an intense and competitive atmosphere that prepares its’
students for the real world. This school’s long lasting positive reputation makes it a fantastic
environment for all students.

Georgetown University’s highly desirable location due to the proximity to the nation’s
capital serves as one of the reason why it sets one up for success in their future. This area creates
an experience for students to gain interaction with people of a variety cultures that live in
Washington D.C. This helps the student learn how to deal with all different types of people
which leads to success in the business world. “Today, many social workers are adding cultural
competence to these already existing strengths and values, making them particularly wellequipped to deliver culturally competent care” (Diversity and Cultural Competence 1). This ideal
location in the capital also offers a variety of jobs and internships. “Because of Georgetown
University's prime location in Washington, D.C., students have access to the scholars, business
executives, policymakers, and other speakers who come to campus. Students can interface
directly with a number of Washington-based institutions, including The Brookings Institute, The
Cato Institute, the International Monetary Fund, the Securities and Exchange Commission, The
White House, The World Bank, and more” (Living in D.C. 1). As a young college student, these
opportunities prove to be very useful in paying for rent and tuition. They also serve as a great
way to get more experience for the next step in your career.
Georgetown offers credible programs ranging from business to law that sets one up for
success in post-secondary life. These courses combined with Georgetown’s prime location in
Washington D.C., show how they are some of the best in the country. The Georgetown
University Law Center is ranked 20th in the nation. According to www.law.gerogetown.edu
“Students can learn environmental law from EPA appointees, study national security law with
former DOD officials and be introduced to appellate advocacy by professors who argue before
the High Court.” Georgetown also stays home to the McDonough School of Business, ranked
24th in the nation. As msb.georgetown.edu states, “Georgetown McDonough’s rigorous academic

program is supported by a strong culture that encourages students to collaborate, forge close
friendships, and extend their learning outside of the classroom and beyond campus.” This
university contains a variety of top ranked programs, which helps students undecided on majors.
In conclusion, Georgetown University remains as a perfect choice for students looking to
have a successful future. While it may contain a rigorous grind of hard work and studying for its
students, the school achieves its goal of preparing the students for life. With its diverse and
interactive campus, this school provides a world class education for all who attend. Georgetown
