Unit: The Amazing Human Body

Teacher: Megan LaHaie
Grade: 5th
Rationale: This 5th Grade unit was designed to meet both Science Grade Level Content Expectations and
Common Core State Standards. In this unit, students will learn about the basic parts and functions of the human
body through reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and performing. Ideally after this unit, students would
learn about specific plants and animals and the similarities and differences between human body functions and
those of plants and animals. This all works into a yearly science plan in which we learn all about organisms that
make up the environment we live in.
Unit Objectives and Standards
 Unit Objectives
o Content Objectives: By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
 Identify at least three different body systems (digestive, circulatory etc.) and their main
functions
 Identify at least six parts of their body and their main functions
 Identify at least three ways our body systems are alike and different than animals
o Language Arts Objectives: By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
 Write everyday at least three sentences about what they learned from the lesson
 Respond to a prompt through an “exit ticket” (will also be used for assessment)
th
 5 Grade Science GLCEs
o L.OL.05.41 Identify the general purpose of selected animal systems (digestive, circulatory,
respiratory, skeletal, muscular, nervous, excretory, and reproductive).
o L.OL.05.42 Explain how animal systems (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular,
nervous, excretory, and reproductive) work together to perform selected activities.
o L.EV.05.12 Describe the physical characteristics (traits) of organisms that help them survive in their
environment.

 5 Grade CCSS ELA
o CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.10
Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter
time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and
audiences.

o CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.2
Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details;
summarize the text.

Reflection
Notes
Originally, this
lesson was
supposed to be
taught on
10/21.
However, due
to time
constraints, I
was unable to
do so. I will be
teaching this
lesson on
10/28. More
reflection to
follow. We were
able to cover a
decent amount.
However, with
time restraints I
think we will
only be able to
choose one
system to focus
on 

We ended up
focusing this
entire unit on
this lesson. The
kids loved it!
They were
super excited
about labeling
all of the bones
in the body and
were super
excited about
making a lifesize model.
The kids had so
much fun
building the
life-size
skeleton!! They
also created
small posters
to share their
knowledge with
their
classmates as
well. I can’t
wait to see
what kinds of

going to say
