Lesson: Current Events and Blackout Poetry

General Learning Outcomes:


Students will demonstrate an understanding of aspects of Aboriginal spirituality and worldviews.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of Aboriginal Art forms, oral tradition and literature.
Specific Learning Outcomes:.
1. appreciate how oral traditions influence ideas, perspectives and interpretations
a. describe the central role and function of the oral traditions as a means of cultural transmission
b. explain how oral tradition, legends, humor and stories assist in the transmission of culture
c. respond to and appreciate the importance of the oral tradition in the education and
socialization processes

Research current events surrounding identity

Create a blackout poem using their article

Think critically about what they are

Students will be coming in from Walking Club and getting their breakfast

Use this time to check in with students about the weekend, how they are doing etc.

Go through the agenda and explain blackout poetry show the first YouTube clip
o Explain that we will be doing current events and if students are really enamoured by
their current event, they can choose to use it for their blackout otherwise I have articles
prepared

Organize students and bring the to the Computer lab to do their current events

I have current events prepared for any students that come late as well. they will also serve as
their blackout poetry templates

Students have just under an hour to complete their current events Current Event must surround
First Nations Political Relations in Canada

Loose leaf will be provided for students who need it. Current event must be handed in before the
break.

Before break remind students that we will be going to the classroom and that they need to log out
and have their current event in my hand before they can leave the room.

Distribute handout on what I am looking for in the blackout poem and expectations for the written
reflection

Blackout Poetry Checklist

Your blackout poetry assignment should be focusing around the topic of worldview and personal
narrative. You are taking a previously created work and turning it into something completely
unique and your own.
I am looking for the connection and rationale between your poem and your written reflections.
With your blackout poems, they need to be long enough to establish your point of view, they
must be a minimum of 10 words. (2)

Written Response:
What is your inspiration behind your poem (2 main ideas)

How and why did you choose these words? (3 main ideas)

How is this an example of personal worldview and storytelling? (3 main ideas)
