The forms in the wall painting create a tempo, a joining of time and space, crystalized into color.
Morriss longstanding practice employs the psychological and visceral properties of color in her
paintings, and a fictional cinematic space produced by documenting reality in her films. Throughout
her practice, Morris has focused upon the idea of mapping the city and the fragmentary path of the
individual with virtual diagrams of architecture and movement.
Miami and most importantly the City of Miami Beach have long been the subjects of focused interest
for Morris. She made her third film titled Miami in 2002, which was prominently exhibited at City of
North Miami MoCA that same year. Her simultaneous series of paintings focused on Miamis past and
present. Floridas history in relation to tourism, leisure, architecture, industry, the American dream and
politics are rich subjects for Morriss interest. Sans Souci references Morris Lapiduss first architectural
work in 1949 outside of his interior designs.

Unified Sea Level Rise Projection
These projections are referenced to mean sea level at the Key West tide gauge. The projection includes three global curves adapted
for regional application: the median of the IPCC AR5 RCP8.5 scenario as the lowest boundary (blue dashed curve), the USACE
High curve as the upper boundary for the short term for use until 2060 (solid blue line), and the NOAA High curve as the uppermost
boundary for medium and long term use (orange solid curve). The incorporated table lists the projection values at years 2030, 2060
and 2100. The USACE Intermediate or NOAA Intermediate Low curve is displayed on the figure for reference (green dashed curve).
This scenario would require significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in order to be plausible and does not reflect current
emissions trends.

Unlike the big-budget Hollywood films of arms thrashing and
high-pitched cries for help, experts say drowning is harrowingly

did not incorporate cell phones.
Considering nearly 50 percent of phone service is conducted
through mobile phones, it was important to have a system that works
with both landlines and cells like CodeRED does, added Tear.
CodeRED is an effective tool, but it takes the cooperation of residents
and those interested in getting the information from the city to sign up.
Using geofencing technology, this service has the capability of
notifying property owners of water line breaks, water shutdowns and
boil water notices, as well as Amber and Silver alerts in the area.
Tourists will also be able to sign up through their mobile phones while
visiting Miami Beach.
Access to timely information is critical to mitigating the effects of a
potential emergency situation, said Tear. The more people we can
reach to alert them of significant events that can affect them and their
loved ones, the better we can keep them safe and our city resilient.

Additionally, over the past five years, the City of Miami Beach
resident population has grown by 4 percent, while the national
average growth for mid-sized cities has been only 1 percent
over the same five-year period. As commonly mentioned,
Miami Beach also has a large group of seasonal residents. The
seasonal population has grown more than 50 percent over the
past 10 years; and over the same period of time, average daily
population, consisting of daily resident population, labor force
in Miami Beach, hotel guests, and other visitors, has grown by
36.5 percent. It is important to note that these average daily
population estimates do not include transient workers, such as
the construction and service workforce.
Traffic congestion is a regional issue, added Gonzalez. And
as such, it requires a holistic and strategic approach.
Check out the various traffic management initiatives the city

A BARREL
OF SAVINGS
By Yanira Pineda
ain water harvesting is not usually top of mind for city dwellers
considering fresh water is easily available from your nearest
Miami Beach faucet. However, rain collection provides an
alternate source of freshwater, promotes sustainable living and
saves money.
Rain barrels are an inexpensive option for capturing storm water
runoff that would otherwise end up in our streets and drains,
explained Lead Gardener Sanna OSullivan, Miami Beach
Botanical Garden. This is one initiative that demonstrates how
a relatively small individual act helps us collectively protect our
environment and enhance our lifestyle.
This practice, which dates back thousands of years, is easy to
implement in Miami Beach since approximately 57 inches of rain
falls annually. That is over two billion gallons of water that could
be collected per year. A properly designed rain water harvesting
system can save the average homeowner up to 1,300 gallons
ofwater.
An average rain barrel ranges in size from about three gallons to
75 gallons and costs range from $50 to $150. The basic barrel
design includes an entry hole to capture the water and a spigot
that allows you to attach a hose for watering your plants or lawn.
However, you can purchase a wide range of colors, shapes, and
designs at your local gardening store or build your own to meet
your needs. The key is to keep your barrel properly covered to
avoid attracting pests.
Interested? Miami-Dade County offers free rain barrel workshops
throughout the greater Miami area for all county residents. At
these workshops, the county has rain barrels and their required
construction materials available for purchase for $40. If you prefer
not to leave Miami Beach, the city will be hosting a rain barrel
workshop for residents this spring.
