How did nke achieve such a level of performance?
nke developed a pilot directly intended for sailing boats. Initially, the skippers’ request was to leave the helm to the pilot under spinnaker. The boat can be balanced when sailing close-hauled. Downwind sailing however, due to varying speed on waves and changes in speed and apparent wind angles, is very unstable. nke’s pilot objective : Steering at the right time to surf down a wave. The nke solution : nke was the first to integrate a rate gyro in the pilot’s control loop to detect this moment. Many skippers are surprised to be overtaken by a competitor sailing under spinnaker and Gyropilot.

A system exclusive to nke, the Gyropilot’s wireless remote control combines the functions of remote control and “Man Over Board” alarm.
Remote control function
Wherever you are on the boat, the wireless remote control allows you to start and stop the pilot, adjust the heading or to initiate a tack. It comprises of an extremely light transmitter that is worn on the wrist or around the neck, and a receiver connected to the bus.
“Man over board” function
The man over board detection system that will stop the boat in a Man Over Board situation, has become an essential feature. It creates peace-of-mind for the skipper and crew using this system. nke is the only one to offer this integrated function.
Each sensor has a high-frequency channel read by the Gyropilot computer The wind vane has been designed for maximum responsiveness. Combined, these two technologies require a responsive power unit: the hydraulic drive The system allows the drive to be positioned close to the axis of the rudder, allowing for precise and stable manoeuvring. E This system allows steering in real mode calculated several times per second (7Hz for the traditional system and 25Hz with the HR processor). It is not recommended to connect non-nke sensors through a NMEA input, as the slower rate of data transmission of wind and speed will reduce optimum performance. The True Wind mode, used to guarantee an optimum down wind angle, was first tested during the 2000 “Vendée Globe” by Michel Desjoyeaux. Since then, this system is being used in the “Figaro 2” races, the “MINI” circuit, and on a great variety of racing and cruising sailboats E nke only offers one pilot model : the GyroPilot 2, which include all of modes tested by racers. The basic nke Gyropilot system offers the same benefits and level of performance that Michel Desjoyeaux enjoys.

The high resolution barometric sensor (1/100 millibar), allows you to view the pressure curve, and display variations over 15min and 1hr. INTERVALS. This high resolution allows quick understanding of the pressure variation trend. nke includes a PC software application (which shows the pressure and temperature trends) with each sensor supplied. The barometer is connected to a COM or USB port of a PC through an interface.

In the event of a Man Over Board, the following procedure takes place : f An audible alarm is activated to warn the crew f The heading and distance to reach the man over board are shown on every nke multifunction display. if you work with Seapro-Navicarte software, the mob mode is automatically launched via the nmea connection. You can outfit any person on board with a crew transmitter (a maximum of 8 per system), which will activate the same procedure. In case of Man Over Board, with the boat running under pilot, it works in the following way : f if there is a masthead unit in the system, it will turn the boat head-to-wind f otherwise, it will fully turn the helm to the opposite tack.

GPS mode display
The Gyrographic has a nmea interface standard built-in , through which GPS data can be entered into the system. GPS data: Course Over the Ground, Speed Over the Ground, heading and distance to waypoint can be viewed on any of displays. Once a course has been entered, the Gyropilot can run in GPS mode.

Hydraulic or electric linear system are available for boats from 6mtrs/20ft. to 18mtrs/60ft. The power to be applied is calculated according to the pressure experienced on the rudders. The sea state, compensation, heel angle, and maximum boat speed are taken into consideration for the calculations.

HR DATA LOGGER
As part of its innovation range intended for professionals and racing teams, nke offers the new HR DATA LOGGER and the motion sensor 3DSENSOR This data logger is recommended to read and save onboard data. It has been designed for permanent connection to the onboard network. It consumes very little power, i.e. 200 milliAmps, weighs just under 500 grams and can record an entire Transatlantic race, i.e. 25 data units per second on a 14 Gb USB key. Combined with the 3DSENSOR, Protéus and a nke control unit, it records the following information :
E The boat movements, including accelerations, 3-axial gyration speeds, both on the hull and on the mast (if required). This data is provided by the 3DSENSOR (lightweight : 50 grams and very low power consumption at 20mA). E The mechanical stresses and loads on components fitted with load cells. An interface is present for

Heel angle sensor
Provides the heel angle of the boat The heel angle sensor is a measuring device that provides the angle of heel of the boat. It can be connected to your nke system or to any other system that processes XDR frames (integrated NMEA 0183 output). The information provided by this sensor is essential for the true wind angle and speed to be calculated correctly. 2 reasons to have it on board : Improved accuracy of true wind by calculating the effect of the wind on the anemometer. Optimum trim control This new electronic sensor measures a +/-70° heel angle with an accuracy of less than half a degree, and allows surface drift calculation. Heel angle recording is essential to measure the boat’s performance and to optimize your polars. Not taking the heel angle into account produces a 2.5° error on the angle of true wind direction !
High precision strategic tool This high resolution sensor (1/100 millibar), makes it possible to view the barometric pressure curve and display variations over 15min and 1hr. Its precision allows you to make your own local weather forecast with great accuracy. The high resolution allows for instantaneous viewing of the trend in pressure variation. For each sensor supplied, nke provides a PC software application that shows the pressure and temperature trends. The barometer can be connected to a COM or USB port with a pc interface. Speed, as the basis of all calculations, is available 100% of the time. The ultrasonic technology allows the flush-mounted sensor to be coated with an antifouling paint, thus guaranteeing minimal drag. The accuracy and linear output from 0 to 50 knots, improves the accuracy of true wind data.
Guaranteed accurate heading measurements The new HR COMPASS sensor precisely measures the magnetic field of the earth. this sensor guarantees you an unrivalled measurement of your magnetic heading even under the most difficult sailing conditions. the HR COMPASS shows its measurements of heading, roll and pitch on your nke displays or any other system equipped with a NMEA interface.

SL50 multifunction display
This large, high quality display shows all the channels available on the Topline Bus using 50mm high characters. Its high definition LCD screen provides excellent viewing and a wide angle for the data displayed, at day or at night. With the wired or wireless remote control, the user selects the channels to be displayed, with red or green backlighting. You can configure the SL50 in one of the four languages available: French, English, Italian and Spanish.
3D SENSOR AND PROCESSOR
The nke motion control unit provides you with all the information on the boat movements (roll, pitch, heave) as well as the compass heading and heel angle. This sensor uses the new MEMS (Micro-Electric-Mechanical-Systems) technology which provides enhanced accuracy and reliability. This technology allows us to offer very small, very light and low power consumption sensors.
