HAZARDS OF ELECTRICITY

ELECTRICAL FIRE
EXPLOSION
ELECTRICAL SHOCK
FLASH OVER
RADIATION
INDIRECT EFFECTS

WE RECEIVE AN ELECTRIC SHOCK. WHEN OUR BODY BECOMES A PART OF ELECTRIC CIRCUIT .

SEVERITY OF THE SHOCK • THE SEVERITY OF THE SHOCK DEPENDS ON: – THE MAGNITUDE OF THE CURRENT – DURATION OF THE CURRENT – PATH OF THE CURRENT FLOW – PHYSICAL CONDITION OF THE PERSON .

EFFECT OF CURRENT ON HUMAN BODY • 0 TO 5 MILLI AMPS -> PERCEPTUAL FEELING • 5 TO 10 MILLI AMPS -> MUSCLE CONTRACTION • 10 TO 15 MILLI AMPS -> MORE PAINFUL FEELING • 15 TO 20 MILLI AMPS -> RESPIRATORY FAILURE • 20 TO 30 MILLIAMPS -> VENTRICULAR FIBRILLATION .

SAFETY HINTS ELECTRICITY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST INVENTIONS WHICH HAS DRAMATICALY CHANGED OUR LIFE STYLE. IT IS OUR BEST FRIEND AND ALWAYS AT OUR COMMAND. . BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT HAS TO BE HANDLED CAREFULLY.

. • IT IS THEREFORE VERY NECESSARY TO TAKE ALL PRECAUTIONS IN PROPER USE OF EQUIPMENT.• IT CAN BE MOST HAZARDOUS TO LIFE OR MAY RESULT IN INJURIES OR LOSS OF PROPERTY OR DAMAGE OR BOTH.

REQUESTED TO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS: .YOU ARE THEREFORE.

• Confirm the dead circuits with neon lamp before making any physical contacts. • Do not use any damaged tools. Get them tested regularly. • Let authorised / licensed persons work on electricity. . • Protect portable tools with MCB / ELCB. Use 3 pin plug with ground wire provision. Inspect all portable electrical equipment regularly for insulation test etc. unless otherwise designated Work permit system.PROCEDURE FOR ELECTRICAL SAFETY DURING MAINTENANCE WORK • Equipment with proper specifications • Treat all circuit as energised.

Ensure their healthiness. • Use proper PPE .rubber gloves. safety shoes. always ask.PROCEDURE FOR ELECTRICAL SAFETY DURING MAINTENANCE WORK • Use of SOP . Verify and Act. . especially in damp & wet areas. tunnels etc.de-energise and safeguard the circuits. • Use low voltage circuits (24V) while working in trenches. rubber mats and safety belts if working in heights. … cont. Clarify. Adequately as per SOP • Avoid cables with joints. • Shield / Cover all live terminals at the place of work. Do not ASSUME. • Clearly understand and follow the written / verbal instruction. when in doubt.

. He should explain his team clearly. one which could be YOU. the craftsman himself. the nature & scope of work and clear doubts if any. as the circuit may be completed by variety of possible paths. •Always cordon your work area with red tape. the system becomes extremely dangerous. It demarks the zone of work conspicuously & also resists the entry. Hence the Order must be: Neutral first vice-versa for disconnecting the Phase last circuit • The person in charge of work should make the last minute check before starting the work.PROCEDURE FOR ELECTRICAL SAFETY DURING MAINTENANCE WORK • When the phase conductor is connected without the neutral path.

low remainence & high saturation level N Secondary winding with high no. of turns Filter Primary winding Varistor Circuit to bypass transient Voltage Filter circuit to bypass transient voltage Time Delay Circuit Time delay circuit (10 ms) Relay Relay with high impedance (10 times normal relay) General construction of HPI residual current device Mech anism .How HPI (High Perturbation Immunity) residual current devices prevent the non-tripping & nuisance tripping: P Core with high permeable material.

. BUY ONLY STANDARD ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE/EQUIPMENT. • THE SUPPLY CORD SHOULD BE IN GOOD CONDITION. • ALWAYS USE 3-PIN PLUGS IN THE APPLIANCE / EQUIPMENT AND CONNECT THEM TO 3-PIN SOCKET ONLY.DO’S • WHILE PURCHASING . FREE FROM CUTS OR DAMAGED INSULATION OR ENTANGLEMENT.

• PUT THE SWITCH ‘ OFF ‘ WHEN THE APPLIANCE /EQUIPMENT IS NOT IN USE. REMOVE THE PLUG FROM THE THE SOCKET.DO’S • CHECK THAT THE PINS OF THE SOCKET OR THE PLUG OR ANY OTHER ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS ARE NOT LOOSE. . • GET YOUR APPLIANCE / EQUIPMENT AND WIRING CHECKED PERIODICALLY FOR ANY DEFECT OR ELECTRICAL LEAKAGE.

.DO’S • ALWAYS CHECK THE RATED VOLTAGE . • PROTECT APPLIANCE / EQUIPMENT AGAINST HUMIDITY. CURRENT AND THE OPERATING TIME OF YOUR APPLIANCE / EQUIPMENT AND ENSURE THAT THESE ARE NOT EXCEEDED. • ALWAYS KEEP THE ROTATING ELECTRICAL EUIPMENT LIKE TABLE FAN OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND PETS.

. MAKE SURE THE SUPPLY IS ALWAYS SWITHED “OFF “. AMATEURS HAVE NO PLACE IN THIS FIELD. • ONLY A QUALIFIED PERSON / LICENSED ELECTRICIAN SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO CARRY OUT REPAIRS.DO’S • BEFORE REPLACING A LAMP OR HANDLING A FAN .

DO’S • THE MAIN SWITCHES SHOULD BE PROVIDED AT A PLACE EASILY ACCESSIBLE TO PUT OFF SUPPLY IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. • USE ELCB ( EARTH LEAKAGE CIRCUIT BREAKER ) WITH MAIN SWITCH AS SHOCK GUARD. . • ALWAYS USE CORRECT SIZE AND QUALITY OF FUSE WIRE FOR RPLACEMENT.

THE SUPPLY END SHOULD BE INSERTED LAST. • IN CASE OF ELECTRICAL FIRE SWITCH OFF THE POWER SUPPLY AND USE SAND .DO’S • WHILE REMOVING THE FUSE CARRIER . EQUIPMENT AND APPLIANCES. PULL SUPPLY END FIRST. DO NOT USE WATER. • EDUCATE CHILDREN ON THE HAZARDS CAUSED BY MISHANDLING ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS . . CO2 OR DCP EXTINGUISHER. WHILE REPLACING IT.

. • TREAT ALL CIRCUITS AS LIVE UNLESS IT IS CONFIRMED AFTER TESTING TO BE ‘’ DEAD “.DO’S • SWITCH ‘OFF’ MAINS WHEN YOU GO ON VACATION. • NEVER BE OVER CONFIDENT WHILE DEALING WITH ELECTRICITY.

• DO NOT TOUCH ANY BARE WIRE (WITHOUT INSULATION) IT MAY BE LIVE. ESPECIALLY WITHOUT PROPER INSULATION.DONT’S • DO NOT INSERT WIRES DIRECTLY INTO THE PLUG SOCKET WITHOUT A MATCHING PLUG PIN TO USE ANY ELECTRICAL APLIANCE EVEN FOR TEMPORARY BASIS. • DO NOT MAKE ANY TEMPORARY JOINTS IN THE WIRING . .

DONT’S • DO NOT CONNECT A FUSE IN THE NEUTRAL CIRCUIT. • DO NOT OVER LOAD THE WIRES BY USING MULTIPLE APPLIANCES FROM A SINGLE 5 AMP PLUG SOCKETS. . • DO NOT USE ANY APPILANCES WITHOUT PROPER EARTHING.

. • DO NOT PROVIDE HIGHER SIZE FUSE WIRE THAN THE PRESCRIBED SIZE. • DO NOT PLUG IN LAMP OR APPLIANCES WITH THE SWITH ‘ON’.DONT’S • DO NOT REPLACE FUSE. • DO NOT USEWET HAND TO SWITCH ‘ON’ AND SWITCH ‘OFF’ THE ELECTRICITY. UNLESS THE FAULT IS DETECTED AND RECTIFIED.

• DO NOT TOUCH THE T. RECEIVER FROM THE CIRCUIT.DONT’S • DO NOT TOUCH THE WATER OR THE METALLIC CONTAINER WHEN THE IMMERSION HEATER IS ‘ON’. ANTENNA WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE T. WITH WET CLOTH.V. • DO NOT JOIN FLEXIBLE CORDS BY TWISTING THE WIRES AND TAPING THEM TOGETHER.V. ETC. BOARDS. YOU MAY GET A SHOCK DUE TO FEED BACK. . DO NOT CLEAN ELECTRICAL SWITCHES.

PAPER.DONT’S • DO NOT REMOVE THE THE WIRE MESH GUARD OF A TABLE OR PEDESTAL FAN. • DO NOT PLACE CLOTHES.OR OTHER COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL NEAR AN ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE WHEN IT IS IN USE. . • IT IS ADVISABLE TO CARRY OUT EXHASTIVE SAFETY AUDIT OF THE HOUSING COMPLEX TO IDENTIFY AND ELIMINATE HAZARDS / DEFECTS AT AN EARLY STAGE.

CARPETS. OR THROUGH DOORWAYS WHERE THEY MAY GET CRUSHED.• DO NOT RUN FLEXIBLE CORDS/WIRES UNDER MATS. .

.REMEMBER ELECTRICITY IS A GOOD SERVENT BUT A BAD MASTER.

THANK YOU .
