PROJECT PURPOSE & GOALS

Project purpose
The overall purpose of the project is to ensure that the learners and the teachers are
comfortable in integrating the solution into classroom teaching and learning.
Specific emphasis is placed on the integration of Learnthings content into teaching
and learning. This implies that teachers should have an understanding of the
navigation system as well as the actual available content.

Goals
By the end of the course participants were introduced to the following:

Overview of the hardware and software solution

Content pre-loaded on the teachers laptop

Classroom Management software on Teachers laptop

Internet and productivity tools

Exposure to Software preloaded on Classmates (Encarta, Learnthings Primary

Content)

METHODOLOGY
The training was initially a face-to-face intervention where I explained all the concepts
relating to the solution.
I demonstrated the solution via role-play: imitating a real class situation with a teacher
and the real teaches being the learners using the classmates.
Teachers worked in groups, each teacher received a printed handout with relevant
activities.
Practical integration happened where the teachers brought their learners to the lab
and the teacher together with the facilitator integrated the Classroom management
tools.
They browsed through the content and some of the teachers even presented lessons
using existing Learnthings content. The Methodology worked well for this
intervention.

CONCLUSIONS & CHALLENGES

THE TEACHERS:
The training proceeded as planned. The teachers were very eager, but the pace was slow due to
their lack of prior experience and different levels of pc literacy. Most teachers could not attend all
the sessions due to transportation difficulties. Mr. Mashaba (Deputy principal), Mr. Sipho and
Oliver assisted me throughout with both Teacher and student training and I invested a lot of time
into them to make sure they understand the Classroom Management system as well as all the
accompanying preloaded software. The older teachers seem to be more hesitant to learn new
things, but once they grasped some of the easier content, they became excited and saw the
possibilities with this system. Follow up and additional training should be considered as the
training time is insufficient.

THE STUDENTS:
Once the students grasped the possibilities of the software, I could not drag them away from the
computers. They expressed their desire to return for more. The audio visual interactive nature of
the software engaged them fully. The workshop was a huge success in this regard. I mostly
covered Encarta and Learnthings Primary content, using step by step lessons, assisted by other
teachers, to familiarise them with the track pad (mouse). For all of them it was their very first time
in front of a pc.

THE SCHOOL:
I was received with an open heart and was treated well by both teachers and students.
There is no pc lab in the school; consequently I had to convert the staffroom into a training facility.
Movement between desks were hindered by lack of space.
