Cloned SPM Question (Paper 2)

The diagram shows a combined solid consisting of a right pyramid and a right prism which are
joined at the rectangular plane QRST. Trapezium VRSW is the uniform cross section of the prism.

Q T

U Z

8 cm R S

V 12 cm W

The height of the pyramid is 9 cm and RS = 10 cm.

(a) Calculate the volume of the pyramid, in cm3.
(b) Given the volume of the combined solid is 680 cm3. Calculate the length of WS, in cm.

Solution
1
(a) Volume of pyramid = × base area × height
3
1
= × (10 × 8) × 9
3
= 240 cm3

(b) Volume of prism = uniform cross section area × length

1
= (10 + 12 ) × SW × 8
2
= 88( SW )

Given the volume of the combined solid is 680 cm3.

Thus, volume of prism = 680 – 240
= 440 cm3
Hence, 88(SW) = 440
440
SW =
88
= 5 cm
