What Standards (national or

state) relate to this lesson?

Name: _Daniela

Lesson Content

MACC.5.NBT.1.2- Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a

number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a

decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote

powers of 10.

MACC.5.NBT.2.7- Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete

models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the

relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and

explain the reasoning used.

Essential Understanding

(What is the big idea or

essential question that you

want students to come away

with? In other words, what,

aside from the standard and our

objective, will students

understand when they finish

this lesson?)

- How can you solve decimal division problems?

teaching?

(Student-centered: What will

students know and be able to

do after this lesson? "C: Given a

sentence written in the past or

present tense, A: the student B:

will be able to re-write the

sentence in future tense D: with

no errors in tense or tense

contradiction (i.e., I will see her

yesterday.)."

- Model division of decimals by whole numbers

- Estimate decimal questions

- Divide decimals by whole numbers

- Place the decimal point in decimal division

- Solve multistep decimal problems

Rationale

Address the following

questions:

Why are you teaching this

I am teaching this because I want students to learn how to use decimals in division. This is

important for students to learn this concept so that they can build on these skills as they

continue to practice more complex math as they get older. It is also an important concept

because it is a skill that is used in real life especially when managing money.

objective?

Where does this lesson fit

within a larger plan?

Why are you teaching it

this way?

Why is it important for

students to learn this

concept?

Evaluation Plan- How will

you know students have

mastered your objectives?

Name: _Daniela

Formative Evidence- I will be walking around the room during the activity to make sure that

students understand the activity. After each question, I will go over the problem if several

students are having trouble with a certain problem.

What formative evidence

will you use to document

student learning during this

lesson?

What summative evidence

will you collect, either

during this lesson or in

upcoming lessons?

Summative Evidence- Students can take the Chapter 5 Extra Practice worksheet out of

their workbook to do extra practice. The next day, students will be taking the Chapter 5 Test

in class, which will be collected and graded.

necessary for a teacher to

teach this material?

- Division

- Decimal numbers

- How to divide decimals

- How to estimate numbers

- How to use patterns or models to demonstrate division

What background

knowledge is necessary for

a student to successfully

meet these objectives?

How will you ensure

students have this previous

knowledge?

- Numbers and operations in base ten

- Generalizing place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers

- Using place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit

arithmetic

How will you ensure students have this previous knowledge?

Teaching Methods

(What teaching method(s) will

you use during this lesson?

Examples include guided

release, 5 Es, direct instruction,

lecture, demonstration, partner

word, etc.)

Step-by-Step Plan

(What exactly do you plan to do

in teaching this lesson? Be

thorough. Act as if you needed

a substitute to carry out the

lesson for you.)

Where applicable, be sure to

address the following:

What Higher Order Thinking

(H.O.T.) questions will you

ask?

How will materials be

distributed?

Who will work together in

Name: _Daniela

I will open the lesson by prompting the students to think about what they have been

learning throughout chapter 5. I will go over key words and vocabulary to activate their

prior knowledge.

- Move the decimal point in the correct direction when finding the quotient

- Correctly estimate the quotient of the decimal and the number

- Correctly divide the decimal by the whole number

Lesson Implementation

Partner work

Cooperative learning

Review game

Each content area may require a different step-by-step format. Use whichever plan is

appropriate for the content taught in this lesson. For example, in science, you would detail

the 5 Es here (Engage/Encountering the Idea; Exploring the Idea; Explanation/Organizing the

Idea; Extend/Applying the Idea; Evaluation).

*

In this lesson, I will be using kahoot to integrate technology into the class. Kahoot is a

game-based classroom response system where you can create and play quizzes. The

students will be using ipods to respond to the quiz.

1. I will start the lesson by activating students prior knowledge and telling them to

think about what theyve learned throughout chapter 5. This is where I will

include the days objective and essential question.

2. Because this is a review game, I want my students to think about all new

concepts and key words theyve learned.

a. I will reiterate chapter vocabulary such as compatible numbers, estimate,

and divide as well as write them on the board

determine the grouping?

How will students transition

between activities?

What will you as the teacher

do?

What will the students do?

What student data will be

collected during each

phase?

What are other adults in the

room doing? How are they

supporting students

learning?

What model of co-teaching

are you using?

Name: _Daniela

3. I will then pass out materials, such as whiteboards, markers, and ipods. While

doing this I will go over the rules and instructions for using the ipods. If there is

any misuse of the technology we will simply quite using it and just use the

whiteboards.

4. Now I will have students join the Kahoot game I have created with the provided

pin. https://play.kahoot.it/#/k/d9bb3db0-ee46-4d50-84f6-db661993e709

5. Students will have 120 seconds to complete each question. There are a total of

20 questions in the review game. The quickest and most accurate students will

receive the most points.

6. If many students miss a question I will go over that problem before moving on

the next question.

7. At the end of the review game, there will be a first, second, and third place

winner.

8. Before they get their prizes, there will be a chance to answer some bonus

questions (H.O.T. Questions).

a. How is dividing with decimals similar to dividing with whole numbers?

b. How can patterns and models help you solve decimals division problems?

c. How do you know where to place a decimal point in a quotient?

d. How do you know the correct number of decimal places in a quotient?

e. What is one way you can check your answer that we learned in the

chapter?

9. These questions will be worth extra points.

10. After I am done with the game, I will collect the materials and clean up.

11. If time permits, students may start working on their homework or read quietly.

a student struggles with the content?

If I notice that there are students struggling with a problem I will work through it with the

whole class to ensure that everyone understands it and to clear any misconceptions.

Students will also be in pairs so that they can help each other if they are struggling

a student masters the content quickly?

I will have bonus questions at the end of the review game to prompt further understanding of

the concepts from Chapter 5.

needs as people and as

learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural

backgrounds of your students?

This chapter connects to students interests because it is very applicable to real life. Students

must be able to estimate or calculate prices whenever they are shopping or buying

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional challenge

during this lesson (enrichment)?

Students who want more of a challenge may work alone instead of in partners. I will also have

bonus questions at the end of the review game to prompt further understanding of the

concepts from Chapter 5.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional language

support?

ELL students do not need to answer verbally if they do not feel comfortable. They can use

their whiteboards to show their work.

Accommodations (If

needed)

(What students need specific

accommodation? List individual

students (initials), and then

explain the accommodation(s)

you will implement for these

unique learners.)

You can place lower level students with higher-level students so they can help each

other.

If needed, you can place students in groups of three.

Materials

(What materials will you use?

Why did you choose these

materials? Include any

resources you used. This can

also include people!)
