: Support the Lumbee Recognition Act May 1, 2010 Dear Senator: Thank you for your continued leadership on behalf of North Carolinians. I am writing to encourage favorable action on the Lumbee Recognition Act, H.R. 31 and S.1735. The Lumbee people have fought for full federal recognition for more than one hundred and twenty years. In 1956, a recognition bill identified the Lumbee as American Indians, while terminating their right to any federal benefits of recognition. Recognition through legislation is the only way to resolve the federal status of this tribe. Congress has repeatedly established the American Indian heritage of the Lumbee people, and studies by the Bureau of Indian Affairs underscore their heritage. Full federal recognition of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is a matter of fairness. Thank you in advance for supporting the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina!
