Classroom Observation Assignment

Observation Form 1
Observation Date:
Teacher Observed:

03/10/2016
Mr. Mustafa Dursun

Observation Time: one hour during class

Subject/Grade Level: Chemistry 9th grade

School Observed: HS School Of Advancement Observer: Ibrahim Ozkaya

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS 111.4. Grade 2.b.)
In my attended course the learning objectives and outcomes of the lesson:

11EUse calorimetry to calculate the heat of a chemical process

Perform calculations involving specific heat, heat of fusion, and heat of
vaporization

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

At the beginning of the class, Mr. Mustafa Dursun took attendance, and then students prepared
their computers. After 5 minutes he started to lecture by asking warm up question and he showed
experiment on software by using projector and screen. Then students start to do complete
experiment with their computer. Every student completed software experiment. When all student
fulfill task, last five minutes Mr. Dursun gave student reading assignment about related to the
topic.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

Notebook
Software chemistry experiment program
Projector and screen

4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? (Lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, socrative questioning, etc.)
Mr. Dursun used lecture method to teach a topic for chemical energy 9th class students. He also
used discovery learning, which requires that students work themselves and make an experiment
in accomplishing a set of tasks. The teacher was ready to answer students questions. He asked

students to follow chemistry experiment instruction and fulfill their experiment at their computer
software program.
5-How did the teacher assess learning? (Informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, openended, quiz, feedback etc.) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods
The teacher used formal learning method, teaching in the classroom. He performed assessment
in experiment. Finding result in the experiment accepted as assessment and also gave some
feedbacks to students answers.

6- What can you say about the teachers philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc.)
Literally, Mr. Durans style is more educative and embracive every pupil. He teaches with
traditional method embedded high-level technology. He lectures directly by using Projection. He
accomplish to attract all of the students attention in the lecture. I impressed by his handling of
technology perfectly; I would like to suggest all teacher to modeling his technique in teaching.

7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?

He always kept in control the lecture running.

He used technology to get their attention when he lectured.
He lectured for limited time interval so students have time to do their experiment
precisely.
He mostly used question-answer technique with students to keep their focus on him
during lecturing.
He answered student questions immediately.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when offtask. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?
In my attended course hour students are mostly focused on topic. They were trying to complete
their experiment on their computer software program. They were be like enthusiastic doing
experiment as if they were playing computer game. If there would be students were getting of the

task, Mr. Dursun could recognized them immediately and went to them. He were already actively
among students and asking some questions about the topic and answering their attentions.

9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)
Mr. Dursun communicated actively with students by attracting their attention to lecture so that
they are not out-off task. Along the course he used non-verbal communication such as body
language, and motion by showing them his eager to teach.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc.)
There were 12 students, 7 of them were boys and rests were girls. They allowed to settle down as
they desired so that they feel themselves comfortable in learning. It was obvious that students
were from different ethnicities, and all of them are native speaker.

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?
Mr. Dursun applied effective strategies to engaging students concentrated on the course
He started lecturing with warm up question,
He moved among student to be focused,
He asked questions and answered students questions.
I didnt realized anything about ineffective in keeping student engaged. The course was barely
perfect.
12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?
One of the instructional strategies I observed in Mr. Dursuns class was questioning. I
liked when he asked students challenging questions about the topic. I would like to use the same
strategy in my classroom, either, so students can easily learn what I taught them.
The other effective strategy that I would like to use in my classroom is use technology.
I would like to teach chemistry as the same way.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?
Mr. Dursun started the class by explaining that days lesson plan. He let students know what they
will learn on that day. I believe this is one of the most important steps to manage a classroom. If
students know what they will learn about, they would be familiar about the topic.
Secondly, treat equally is another important point to classroom management. A teacher should
behave to treat equally all student. Mr. Dursun tried to communicate with all students, and he
tried to reach everyones question by stepping to them every time.
