Life after College

When asked What do you want to do after college? one has to do some deep
thinking to actually figure out what best fits them. For me the only thing I can think of
that would be best suitable for me is radio and television. In this paper I will go into
detail of why I chose that field, how the job market is looking the radio and television
field and the steps needed to land a job in that field.
As a child I was always known for being talkative. By the time I got to middle
school and was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up and I said I wanted to be in
radio and television. She asked Wow, thats different what made you come up with that
field? I told her because I love to talk and I should get paid for something I love to do.
Radio fits me because I have a great personality.
In this job market, media is actually increasing due to the decrease in print media.
It was stated that Some traditional media and communications businesses, including
public relations and magazine publishing, will continue to grow quickly, the report says,
suggesting that New York's position as a global capital gives it an advantage in the
increasingly international media market (Eaton, 1998). This information was giving
more than 16 years ago and so much has changed since then. Now in this time a person

would rather read the newspaper over the internet before getting a newspaper
subscription.
Also more people listen to the radio because it gives more in-site on pop culture as
well as social media. PR Newswire states, In today's world, newspaper reporters are
being replaced by online bloggers and podcasters. Classified ad salespeople are being
replaced by "social media account executives," and there are a whole slew of other jobs
that are going online and turning social (PR Newswire, 2012). Social media has greatly
influenced the publics eye for radio. Radio station use social media to draw outside
listeners in. With social media being used by so many people across the world, radio is
being tuned in by so many viewers world-wide its amazing. A lot of radio personalities
used social media to keep fans informed on stuff that was probably missed on-air. Also
because of a lot of issues blacks are more inclined to listen to radio. It says, Media
targeting Black audiences must pay closer attention to the issues surrounding this
landmark piece of economic legislation, which has significant implications for
economically disconnected sectors of society. (Green, 2012). With the height in crimes,
blacks have become more in touch with media to get points across to society.
In order to land a job in this field I will have to finish college and also get my
masters in communication as well. Along with taking classes, I would need some hands
on experience in the field. I would have to get a serious of internships and volunteer
opportunities. Also, when I get the job I would have to plan a lot as stated, People think
DJs do their show and go home but it's not like that. After every show we have a meeting.
We're constantly having to come up with new ideas (Lennox, 2005). I think getting a job

wouldnt be somewhat of a challenge if I network and make a name for myself. A lot of
alumnus have successfully gotten jobs in the same exact field I want to be in so I can see
that here at Johnson C. Smith I am given the right information to lead me in the right path
with people who have taken the same professors and classes.
In conclusion, this is a job I want to pursue because even though it would be an
excited career path plus I have the personality for the job. Also this job will help me
move on to bigger dreams I have of having my own television show or even move into
news for a well known news station. After researching, being a radio talent seems like the
job for me.
