How can ocean pollution be prevented?

There is no single way to treat the pollution that is already absorbed in our waters. Bernard with
LoveToKnow states that once the pollution has occurred there is nothing to help it. All that can
be done is preventing the pollution from happening again. Not only does ocean pollution start
with trash on the beaches, but it also starts at our homes and highways. Wind and stormwater
carry things into our estuaries that lead to our oceans. There are many of ways we can prevent
this as well. We should carry reusable bags to the grocery stores rather than taking millions of
plastic bags home weekly, avoid products with excess packaging, and certainly dont litter. If
everyone pitched in just the smallest bit, it could make a huge difference.

A pollution prevention cooperation known as Save our Shores, has a plastic pollution
initiative. The objective of the plastic pollution initiative is to decreases the amounts of pollution
on our beaches using a few different techniques. They believe that education on the marine life
could result in a decline of pollution. Save our Shores has also started local beach clean ups,
where people in the community come together to collect all of the plastics, and other trash left on

the beaches by beachgoers. Also the cooperation is trying to get others to advertise the issue of
ocean pollution. Save our Shores focuses more on the issues of plastic pollution, rather than
other pollutants such as oil, and other chemicals. Plastic is the most visible pollutant and
therefore some believe is the major issue.

The NRDC also sees plastic is as the biggest problem in ocean pollution. They believe plastic
covers the ocean, and is harming marine life, and humans. The NRDC claims that ocean
pollution wouldnt be a problem, if the pollutants never reached the ocean in the first place. If
everyone cleans up behind themselves. Most beach accesses offer trash and recycle bins, and
there is no excuse for littering now a days. They are certain that if companies that are distributing
plastics would come up with a way to prevent pollution so that the containers items are sold in
could be reusable. Beachgoers could take responsibility by using the recycle and waste bins
provided at the beach accesses. Also by reducing the amounts of plastics and pollutants that they
are bringing.
