TANK TESTING PROCEDURE Page 3 of7
REv.! DATE
2 ! 9 May 2006 1.0 'Scope

This procedure covers the air testing and hydro testing methods to test the various watertight and oil tight tanks.

2.0 Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to check & confirm that the weld joints of watertight and oil tight tanks are leak free and to check the structural integrity of the tanks.

3.0 Responsibility

The relevant section superintendent shall be responsible for ensunng that this procedure IS followed during tank air testing or hydro testing.

The relevant section foreman shall be responsible for thorough supervision in different stages of testing.

4.0

Procedure

4.1 Tank Air Testing

4.1.1 Completion of all the hot works shall be ensured and visual inspection shall be carried out prior to tank air testing.

4.1.2 Air testing shall be carried out prior to application of Epoxy coating. However, pre-fabrication primer on welds and full coating on automating (SAW) welds are allowed to apply prior to air testing.

TANK TESTING PROCEDURE Page 4 of7
REV. I DATE
2 I 9 May 2006 4.1.3 Operational permit (If applicable) must be obtained, all personnel must be cleared and all the openings within the tank must be closed prior to air testing.

4.1.4 The apparatus required for the testing are as follows:

W' Transparent flexible hose Safety valve

Isolation valve for compressed air line Compressed air connection

Soap solution

Water

4.1.5 Two Y/' diameter openings shall be made on temporary cover for pipe on manhole opening. A steel pipe shall be welded on top of one of the hole for flexible hose to attach on. A transparent hose with a height of minimum 7 feet shall be attached to this pipe and it is to be supported vertically with a loop near the temporary cover. Another pipe with valve and compressor hose coupling shall be welded on top of the other hole as shown in figure 1.

4.1.6 Safety valve should be provided on top of the temporary cover so as to avoid over pressurization of tank.

4.1.7 Before start pressurizing the tank, transparent hose shall be filled up with water up to the loop level as shown in figure 2.

4.1.8 Open the compressed air inlet valve to tank and start fill up the tank with compressed air. Care shall be taken to make sure that the water will not be forced out of the transparent hose by the pressure inside the tank (figure 3).

4.1.10 Weld joints (SMA W) of pressurized tank boundary shall be subjected leak check by spraying soap solution on it.

(~\) 4. I. I I If any leakage found shall be rectified and re-tested.

4.1.12 After completion of testing, care shall be taken to release the pressurized air inside the tank prior to opening the temporary cover.

4.2 Tank Hydro Testing

4.2.1 Completion of all the hot works, visual inspection and air testing shall be ensured prior to conducting tank hydro testing.

4.2.2 Tank shall be filled with water and hydro test shall be carried out with a head of water to overflow through the vent.

4.2.3 The water level shall be maintained until the structural integrity is confmned by visual inspection.

4.2.4 Visual inspection for structural integrity shall be done progressively during filling of water to avoid permanent deformation of tanks. If any excess deformation found during filling the water, filling shall be stopped immediately.

4.2.5 Hydro testing is permitted even after final painting.

4.2.6 After completion of hydro testing, water shall be drained and cleaned.
