different
decorative
styles is a
skill that can take years to
master. For Katrin Cargill,
though, it’s second nature,
thanks to her nomadic
childhood and career as
a designer and stylist.
‘My father was
American and my mother
is Swiss, and we travelled
a great deal when I was
growing up,’ explains
Katrin. So it’s no surprise
to discover that the London
home she and husband
David share is a seamless
blend of New England and
classic Scandinavian style.
‘I love the simplicity and
proportion – a pared-down

FAVOURITE FEATURe ‘I love the
fact that this house is so light and
sunny, especially in summer’
version of 18th-century
French design,’ she adds.
‘Our previous house
in Battersea was a shoebox,
so when, in 2011, we got
the chance to move to a
much larger house with a
garden, we leapt at it,’ says
Katrin. ‘However, it had
dark rooms, ugly doors
with high handles, and it
was built in the vernacular
style of the 1930s, which is
my least favourite type of
architecture. Shortly after
we moved in, I can recall
sitting up at night, saying,
“what have I done?” to my
shell-shocked husband.’
However, Katrin threw
herself wholeheartedly into
transforming the property,
and her initial misgivings
quickly subsided. ‘Having
worked as a designer for
so many years and written
books, I was confident I

64 | 2 5 B H J U N E 2016

could improve the dated
interior,’ she says. ‘I designed
it with the aim of hiring the
place out for photoshoots,
so I had a really clear sense
of how I wanted it to look
– lots of natural light,
square spaces and a blank
canvas.’ Having a fireplace
in the kitchen was also a
top priority. ‘I frequently
visit Belgium buying
antiques for clients, and
so many houses over there
have them that it became
one of my must-haves.’
Katrin and David
also applied for planning
permission for a rear
extension, which took
a year for their design to
be approved. ‘Planners
are used to standard glass

extensions, but needed
time to get their heads
round the idea of a New
England-style verandah,’
says Katrin. When the
building work was finished,
she turned her attention
to the interior decor.
Both light and space
are accentuated by Katrin’s
skilful use of colour. I
have kept things simple
by mixing one shade at a
time with white – it’s my
favourite way of working,’
she says. Vintage linens and
patterned materials, chosen
from her huge selection of
vintage textiles, are paired
with French antiques and
Katrin’s collection of
original 1980s Ikea dining
chairs by Lars Sjoberg. ‘I
wanted our home to reflect
my main sources of design
inspiration,’ she says, ‘and I
think it does just that.’

the original parquet flooring on the ground
level and the reproduction Victorian tiles
in the kitchen, and added engineered oak
elsewhere. All the rotten church-style
windows were restored and Tim bought
another one from eBay to make a striking
feature in the top-floor bathroom.
During the build, a surprise discovery
was made. ‘Someone had screwed all the
property’s original internal doors together
to form a wall and then covered them with
plasterboard,’ reveals Tim. ‘So they’ve all
been restored and reused, and I also had
the old oak front door rebuilt by a joiner.’
Tim was thrifty but creative when
it came to fitting out the interiors – the

kitchen is made up of freestanding furniture,
while a bath found in a skip now graces one
of the en suites. ‘I always stop to look in skips,’
he says. ‘It’s where I got all my chandeliers
from, too.’ The cobbled courtyard had been
tarmacked over, so Tim and Mark laid stone
and bricks found both on site and online.
‘And as one of the gatehouses was damaged
by an encroaching tree, I opened up the sides
to create a sheltered seating area, and
reinforced the structure with iron rescued
from the burned-down pier at Weston-superMare. I’ve tried to create a grandiose period
look, but on a small scale and budget.’
When it came to the details and soft
furnishings, Tim enlisted the help of his

friend Anne Wall, who works for Absolute
Academy School of Interior Design. She
organised a competition among her students,
and the winner, Caron Burrows, chose the
paint colours and wallpapers for Tim’s new
home. Caron opted for a rich colour palette
of dark green, turquoise and mustard hues
inspired by the Victorian era of the house.
Though the journey has been a long and
tiring one, Tim is thrilled with the result.
‘I knew that I was adding value to the place,
and that my hard work would be rewarded,’
he says. ‘When the project was finished in
2015, Cheltenham Civic Society came to view
the property and gave it a conservation award
– that was the real icing on the cake.’

For many of us, the

of daily life as sleeping and
eating, so deciding where
to position it merits careful
consideration. In Jules

state-of-the-art flat screen
television has been mounted on a bespoke
wall panel designed to match the media
unit below it. Rather than hide her TV
behind closed doors, she has decided to
make a feature of it. When fixing a
television on a wall or panel consider
mounting it on a bracket that enables
you to swivel the screen to the perfect
position. As a general rule, you should
try to sit four times the distance from
the screen as its size. Other housing ideas
are to conceal the set behind a large
mirror or artwork, or within a cabinet.

A complementary colour
scheme has been used to
great effect in the Schillers’

a distinct identity, Rebecca

unexpected palette of

pale grey for the walls and
rich cream for the woodwork and floor.
Warm pops of apricot and pink have been
picked out in the soft furnishings and
artwork to add essential finishing touches.
Known as accent colours, these should
be used in small doses to help lift a room
scheme. A clever design technique,
juxtaposing hot and cool shades like
this is ideal for creating a balanced look
that doesn’t jar the senses. The overall
feeling of this space is that of comfort
and homeliness. Simple yet honest
wooden furniture completes the look.

tradition, the back panel of
the chair has been upholstered in a smart
red-and-cream stripe. This tailor-made
approach to upholstery helps elevate the
room out of the ordinary and is an ideal
way to introduce pattern the proceedings.
The wider stripe of the chair backs link
with the finer stripe of the curtain fabric.
Throughout the otherwise all-white area,
red has been used sparingly as an accent
colour. When devising a room scheme,
choose patterned upholstery, curtain
fabrics and wallpaper first, then match
in paint colours and flooring.
