    Mygrouphasselectedracialstudiesforourextendedinquiryprojectthissemester.The
    projectwillbefocusedonAfricanandWhiteAmericanracialissuesintheUnitedStatesfrom
    the1950stonow.
    Racismisstillprevalentintodayssociety,althoughithastakendifferentformsitisstill
    anissuefacingthenation.Sinceayoungagemyhistoryclasseshaveprovidedanoutlineofthe
    majorracialissuesbetweenAfricanAmericansandWhiteAmericans.TakingAPU.SHistory
    myjunioryeargavemethebestinsightintothehistoryoftheirrelationship.Duringthatcourse
    wereadanddiscussedthecivilrightsmovementingreatdetail.TheBrownv.Boardof
    Educationrulingwasakeyeventthathappenedintheearly1950s,therulingstatedthat
    segregatedschoolswerenotequalandunconstitutional.ThisrulinghelpedfueltheCivilRights
    Movement,whichleadtomanychangesinthelevelsofequalitybetweenAfricanandWhite
    Americans.TheVotingRightsactof1965bannedtheuseofteststodenyapersontherightto
    vote.Comparatively speaking, racism has taken many different forms in
    todays society.Whilewenowhaveequalityinvoting,education,andtheotheraspectsof
    life,racismhastakentheforminhatecrimesandsocialmediaposts.
    Thetopicinparticularinterestsmebecauseeveryonehasheardaboutracialissues
    betweenAfricanandWhiteAmericansbutmanydontknowthatmuchaboutit.Theyhavea
    limitedknowledgeonthesubject.Thistopicwillallowmetoresearchanddevelopabetter
    understandingoftheracialissues.Iamalsointerestedinthechallengeofpresentingthe
    informationmygroupandIfindonthistopic.TheareathatImfocusingonforthisprojectis

    Thereare3mainquestionsIhopetofindanswerstobytheendofthisproject.Thefirst
    questioniswhatareasareracialissuesmostprevalentinandiftimehasaffectedit?Thesecond
    questionisiflocationhasanaffectonhowtheracialissuesareportrayed?Lastly,Iwanttoseeif
    socialmediaisusedasacatalystforracialissues?
    Thebestplacetofindsomeoftheanswerstomyquestionwouldbelookingatdifferent
    moviessuchasHairsprayandRemembertheTitans.HairsprayissetBaltimore,Marylandin
    1962andshowsthefightagainstracialsegregation.RemembertheTitanstakesplacein
    Alexandria,Virginiain1971andshowshowateamfightstoovercometheracialbarriersset
    againstthem.ThebookToKillaMockingbirdcouldalsobeusedtohelpfindsomeanswers.
    ThebookissetinafictionaltowninAlabamaandwhilethetownandcharactersarefiction,the
    storyiswrittenbasedonpersonalexperience.Thisstoryoutlinessomeoftheracialissues
    betweenAfricanandWhiteAmericans.Italsoshowshowamanstoodupforracialequalityand
    howthataffectedhowheandhisfamilyweretreated.AnothersourceIcouldusewouldbe
    locatingopinionatedpieces,newsstories,orarticleoffthelibrarydatabasethattalkaboutthe
    sameissuebutarewrittenindifferentareasofthecountry.Thiswouldallowmetocompareand
    contrasthowdifferentracialissueareportrayedandreportedonbasedonthelocation.
    IntheresultofmyresearchbeingtoobroadandIhaveexcessamountsofinformationI
    cannarrowmyresultstoasmallertimeframe.Icanlimitittoa15yearperiodorless,allowing
    theresearchtobemorefocused.Anothermethodofnarrowingmyresearchwouldbefocusing

    orpoliticalequalityandseeinghowthosearepresentedindifferentpartsofthecountry.
    IftheresultsofmyinitialresearcharetoonarrowandIdonthaveenoughinformationto
    giveawellroundedandinformativepresentationonracialstudies,thetimeframecanbe
    increasedtoexpandbeforethe1950s.Lookingathowissueswerehandledbackthentohow
    theyarehandlednow.Alsoifsomeofthesameissuesarestillfacingtheareanow.Expanding
    theparametersoftheprojectisanotheroption.Icouldalsoresearchracialissuesbetween
    AfricanandWhiteAmericansindifferentcountries,ornotlimittheresearchtoonlyracialissues
    betweenAfricanandWhiteAmericans.
