becauseofgenetics.Myfamilyhasahistoryof
cancer,socoulditbebecauseofourgenes?Ihave
neverresearchedcancerbecauseithasnotdirectly
affectedmebutaftermysisterwasdiagnosedI
neededtofindoutwhoandwhyshegotthyroid
cancer.

Whataregenes?Itiswhatcodesforeverythingin
ourbody.Genesarepresentinalmosteverycellof
ourbodyandcarriestheinstructionsourcellsneed
tofunctionproperly.Wegetthesegenesfromourparents23chromosomesfrombothyour
motherandfatherforatotalof46.Genesisaverybroadtermthatbasicallydeterminesasingle

asbrownhair.Thesegenesaredefinedbygenotypeswhichisthecodeforthatcharacteristicthat

increasedlikelihoodofdevelopingcancer,Iencourageyoutoconsultwithaspecialistwhohas
experienceintheareaofhereditarycancer,cancerriskassessment,andgeneticcounselingand
testing.

cancerFMTC.IndividualswiththisgeneticmutationoftendevelopFMTCduringchildhoodor
earlyadulthood.

alsonowunderstandthatitmaybebecauseofourfamiliesgeneticsandbecauseofthisIwill
havemyselfandmyfamilygeneticallytestedforthiscancer.
