There were many drill-based wor workbooks available, but students learn more and are motivated when they get the opportunity to interact. Finding hands-on activities that focused on math skills on the test were difficult to find. Activities to really motivate and engage students were even more ce. ‘alone | | As we visited with other teachers during workshops and in-services, we found that many teachers were wanting ready-made activities to help students meet the standards, without boring them with drill- and-kill seatwork. We began putting a notebook together that contained Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures, focusing on national standards our students struggled with. We began using the activities in our classrooms with our students. We could immediately see that it was beneficial for them. All students were engaged in the activities; they were having fun and learning important information. We made learning math cooperative and exciting In this book you will find activities to use with selected Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures. Step-by-step instructions and practical tips on how to use each structure with the given activity are provided. Cooperative Math is designed to give teachers a resource that aligns with the national standards. Activities in this book are carefully planned around the national standards. Each chapter organized by structure and includes activities selected from the math strands: Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability. The activities in the book, along with the Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures, are designed to engage EVERY student in learning, even those who are usually quiet, disengaged, or perform poorly on math assessments. With engaging structures such as Fan- N-Pick, RallyCoach, and Showdown, each student will be given the chance to acquire the mathematical and social skills needed to achieve in today’s society. [About (the yAuthors BR 22% Stites draws on 16 years of teaching experience ranging from Grades 1-8. She has a Master’s degree and has completed a Post Master's program For the past several years, Ranae has taught third grade.
