Spring/Summer 2016

Presidents Message - Don McIntyre

This year, has been challenging, but enjoyable. I have
been able to meet and work with many wonderful people here in Laurel Park. Our Board has done a great
job organizing and managing the events and projects
this past year and they deserve a big thank you. All are
volunteers putting in time and energy, as well as fun, to
help your community.
This community has long depended upon volunteers to
maintain and improve our town on the mountain. Volunteers are always needed and welcomed. You say
you are too old, too young, or too busy!!! Look at us,
we are all too busy, too young or too old. Get involved,
join with us. Surprise yourself, it can be fun!
Progress At Jump Off Rock
As I write this, we are looking forward to our joint LPCA
and Town Jump Off Rock construction project to be
completed. When you read this newsletter, Phase I of
the project has been completed. The 2016 Jump Off
Rock Music Festival is planned for Saturday, May 28,
and will give you the opportunity to enjoy the changes
made to the Park.
We now need your continued support so that the second phase of the improvements can be made at Jump
Off Rock Park. Plans are to extend electric service to
the new Vista Area, to replace the old unsightly utility
pole near the park entrance, with underground service
and new lighting fixtures in the median strip, and to
provide attractive landscaping on the hillside adjacent
to the Vista area.
You can easily become a Friend of the LPCA by donating $100 and, thus, help the LPCA complete our effort to make the Park more enjoyable and beautiful.
Progress on Walking Trails
On another front, slowly but surely progress is being
made to have your Town become more walkable.
This goal was set years ago and now some of the first
steps (no pun intended?) are being made. Walking
trails were planned through joint efforts by the Towns
Parks & Greenways Board and an LPCA Walking Trails
committee. Paul Hansen has constructed about 30 trail
markers (see a prototype by the Town Hall) which are
being installed along three trails in lower Laurel Park.

The Town is painting cross walks on Laurel Park

Highway where these trails cross this road. The
LPCA has paid for the markers out of your membership dues. Thank you committee members,
Paul and Alison.

dedicated to improving the quality of life on our
Town on The Mountain. This past year, the
LPCA, working with the town, began the major
project to improve Jump Off Rock Park, sponsored family events celebrating various holidays,
posted two new historical markers and made
progress on developing signage for three new
walking trails in lower Laurel Park. Our fiscal
year - and, thus, our annual membership term - is
July 1st to June 30th annually. You can join the
LPCA or renew your membership by completing
the enclosed membership application and take it

members. If you have questions, contact any

LOCAL NOTABLES
We have many talented people living here in Laurel
Park. In upcoming issues of the newsletter, we will
feature a resident with a special talent. Our featured
local notable for this issue is the artist, Cynthia Wilson.
Cynthia paints in both
acrylics and watercolors.
Currently her work can
be seen at Firefly Gallery
in Flat Rock and Grovewood Gallery in Asheville.
Although Cynthia paints
from nature, she says
there is a certain point
when the painting becomes something other
than a representation of
what she sees. She uses
certain themes that are not only visual, but are also
metaphors for life as she experiences it. The theme of
floating leaves, for example, has been a major part of
her work for at least thirty years, and is about change
and transcendence. Her actual process is tied more to
viewpoint and inner vision than to technique and she
has to develop a sense of oneness with her subject.
Once she has an idea and begins to paint, the work
takes on a life of its own reflecting her emotions, observations, and experience as an artist.
A renowned artist, her work has been featured in "The
Best of Watercolor"and "Floral Inspirations"by Rockport Publishing and "Artists Magazine." She has been
included in "Who's Who in American Art" since 1992,
and her paintings are in collections including the
Housatonic Museum of Art, Fairfield University and
Georgia Tech. Locally, she has created two of the
"Bearfootin'in Hendersonville" bears appearing on
Main Street Cynthia also teaches private lessons and
workshops through Hemlocks Studios. She has earned
signature membership in New England Watercolor
Society, South Carolina Watercolor Society, American
Artists Professional League, Pennsylvania Watercolor
Society and National Society Of Painters in Casein and
Acrylic, and has completed 17 solo exhibitions of her
work.
Laurel Park is very proud of our talented artists such as
Cynthia Wilson.
