Appendix 1 Expert interview and questionnaire results

What do you think are the main areas of weakness for our foundation
year students? (Perhaps in Appendix)

A lack of academic culture awareness.

Research, work ethics, plagiarism, reading and writing.

A lack of ideas and self-expression.

Very often students use others ideas and thoughts without much of

their own.

They do not fully understand that art is also about research and evaluating
ones work.
They have to read many sources, but usually find this too difficult.
They do not organise their research and thoughts well, typically translate
phrases which sound strange in English, do not see the importance of
referencing peoples work and have general grammar and vocabulary
issues.

Grammatical Range &

Accuracy

Strengths
Few mistakes in word
order. Errors made tend
not to interfere with
readers comprehension.

Lexical Resource

Spelling fairly good

throughout for most of
the group in that it
causes no strain for the
reader.

Coherence and Cohesion

Some understanding of
overall text structure
with one students essay
flowing fairly well.

Weaknesses
Russian structures in
English. Mainly simple
sentences with few
attempts to create
various clauses.
Lack of wide range of
vocabulary. Problems
with knowledge of
words, i.e. countability.
Although fairly good,
spelling does slip at
times.
Lack of adequate
paraphrasing. No clear
paragraph organization
or topic sentences. Few
examples and
development. Lack of
more complex cohesive
devices.
