Mathematics lesson plan EDMA262

Lesson Topic:
Place value

Date:
17/04/15

Year Level(s): 2

Lesson
duration:
60 minutes

Mathematical Focus
A focus on interpreting 3-digit numbers, using relevant place value units (hundreds, tens and ones) and
ordering numbers (smallest to largest) by understanding how the units determine the placement of
numbers in a sequence.

Australian Curriculum (AC):

Year level(s): Year 2
Content-strand: Number and Algebra
Sub strand: Number and place value
Content descriptors(s):
Group, partition and rearrange collections up to 1000 in hundreds, tens and ones to facilitate more
efficient counting (ACMNA028)
Recognise, model, represent and order numbers to at least 1000 (ACMNA027)
(ACARA,2012)
Proficiency strand(s) and statement:
Understanding: Interpreting 3-digit numbers as being comprised of the units; hundreds, tens and ones
and partitioning digits of given numbers, into corresponding place value unit.
Reasoning: Justify, order and explain how smallest and largest quantities are identified and known.
Fluency: Describing 3-digit numbers, using correct units.

Considerations for learner diversity:

Indigenous learners:
-Visual-spatial learners: provide them with visual cues; 3-digit number unit labels or with
corresponding pictures and number symbol labels.
-Scaffold by demonstrating how to use materials.
-Hands-on learners: allow students to use hands-on materials for both tasks and take photo of
their final product for assessment.

English as additional language learner/dialect (EALL/D) learners:

-Provide learners with; unit word labels and number word labels.
-Repeat instruction verbally, giving a simplified written instruction sheet with corresponding visuals.
-Practice how to say unit words.
-Demonstrate how to describe a 3-digit number.
-Pair a student with same first language, to assist with communication.
Organisation for learning:

Whole class sits on the floor for tuning in activity.

Students work at tables in pairs. They give each other a number for the individual task- completing
work sample.
Students work in pairs, one student forms the given number, using provided hands-on materials,
while their partner works out the number.
Teacher roving and asking probing questions. Once complete, the pairs order the 3-digit numbers
worked on.
Whole class on floor for reflection on the task.
