Gov. Fallin Proposes Using Rainy Day
Fund to Support Schools,
Prison System
Gov. Mary Fallin introduced a proposal March 7, suggesting the Oklahoma
government access the states Rainy Day
Fund as a way to offset increased budget cuts to the states school and prison
systems. Fallin introduced the idea as
a way to prevent schools from being cut
back to four-day school weeks and to
decrease pressure on the states prison system, which is already looking at
releasing non-violent offenders as a way
to reduce costs. The governor suggested
using $51 million for public schools and
an additional $21 million to support the
Department of Corrections. Formally
known as the Constitutional Reserve
Fund, the fund was created in 1985 as
a way to gather funds when the economy is strong to support state operations
during drastic budget cuts such as the
current crisis. The fund has a current
balance of $385 million, of which $144.4
million is reserved for dealing with the
2016 budget crisis. The proposition now
moves on to Congress.

Oklahoma K-12 teachers on average make
$31,000 annually, which is significantly lower
than surrounding states such as Kansas,
where teachers make on average $48,000
annually. Kansas cost of living averages
approximately 1.8 percent higher than Oklahomas.
Because of lower salaries, districts statewide are struggling to keep teaching staff full.
You almost feel stupid for not leaving,
Blasingame said.
The movement is projected to generate
$615 million a year to add a $5,000 bonus to
teachers salaries across the state.

The 10th annual Womens Leadership

held Friday, March 25. This years topic will
be Women and Education: Embracing Our
Future. The goal of the conference will be to
inspire and empower women to work together to become active leaders in their own lives
and their communities.
The special guest speakers were selected based on their aspirations, with lectures
demonstrating how to create a more positive
role for women in Oklahoma as students prepare to enter the workforce
or move onto universities.
By focusing on the history
and development of womens
roles in educational fields
and the workforce, young
women are encouraged to
collaborate and expand relationships to shape future
success. The conferences
underlying theme celebrates

RSCs Dr. Hendrix wins NADE award for

Our faculty are doing as much and more
than faculties from any other institution I
have ever been to and Ive been to about 20
now. Ive gone to about one or two a year for
16 years. I always come home and have an
appreciation for our faculty because I think
they do a good job, Hendrix said.
The NADE has spent 40 years helping

Hendrix will accept her award at the annual NADE conference March 18.

Outstanding Support to Developmental Education award.

Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr.

Frances Hendrix was awarded the Administrator/Public Servant for Outstanding Support to Developmental Education award from
the National Association for Developmental
Education. This award recognizes those who
have strongly supported the success of educational development but are not developmental educational professionals.
Hendrix was nominated by the Rose State
faculty for her support of developmental
studies. She stated that despite the difficulties in a developmental class, the faculty
works hard to keep the students motivated
so they can focus on moving on to the next
class.
To be nominated by your faculty makes it
even more special, Hendrix said.
According to the Oklahoma State Regents
for Higher Education for the 2013-2014 academic year, 39 percent of college freshmen
are required to take one remedial class in
math, English, reading or science. Rose State
has been working to make it easier for students who have to take remedial classes.
The English department is currently creating co-requisites. This will allow students
to enroll in a developmental class and the
next level class at the same time.
For example, if they need a Comp. I class
- this allows students to get the extra help
they need while at the same time taking
Comp. I, which wont cost them a semester,
Hendrix said.
The math department is also adopting
several initiatives, including a STEM and
non-STEM track depending on a students
degree, an increased focus on high school
seniors and enhancements to the existing
developmental program.

Hashtag goes viral as Kesha fights for freedom

by Michelle Rojano
News Editor

The recent outburst of feminists, females

and fans on social media brought copious
amounts of support and attention to singer Kesha and her fight to free herself of a
contract binding her to her alleged abuser,
Lukasz Sebastian Dr. Luke Gottwald.
The issue began in an interview Kesha had
with the Rolling Stone Magazine in October
2013, where she stated she felt she had no
control over her music. The following year,
Kesha was admitted into a rehabilitation clinic due to the eating disorder bulimia nervosa.
Later in 2014 she made the decision to sue
Gottwald for assault and rape. The lawsuit is
looking for monetary reparations to be made
for the abuse and for the termination of the
contract between her and Sony Music Entertainment, which requires the production of
three more albums.
Gottwald claimed the allegations were false
and were part of a scheme for the singer to
get out of her contract without completing
her end of the agreement and responded with
a countersuit for defamation.
The reason the case has been trending
lately is because the judge denied the injunction made by Keshas lawyer that would allow
her to temporarily break her contract with

Sony and be able to record outside the label.

Keshas lawyer argued that not recording
for a long period of time could negatively
affect the pop star, but the judge did not
see it as necessary to go against a contract
that is heavily negotiated and typical for the
industry. The judge also took into account
that Sony had agreed to let her record with a
different producer.
This caused an immense outburst of rage
on social media and resulted in a large increase of supporters for Kesha. The #FreeKesha hashtag went viral on the Internet and
even reached celebrities like Lady Gaga and
Demi Lovato.
Singer and songwriter Taylor Swift not only
publicly voiced her support, but also donated $250,000 to help Kesha during this time.
A Twitter account was also created to support the pop star called the Kesha Recovery
Team, solely dedicated to supporting Kesha.
As for Gottwald, he is still facing hostility and attacks made by people who support
Keshas case.
While the injunction was an important
battle, the war is far from over and the case
could take anywhere from months to years
for it to reach a final decision.

North Korea Threatens Preemptive

Nuclear Attack
North Korea threatened to launch a preemptive nuclear strike in response to joint
U.S. and South Korean military exercises
that began March 7. While U.S. officials
said that belligerent warnings and threats
are typical at this time of year from the
countrys totalitarian regime, they encourage caution in consideration of increased
tension. The United Nations recently
imposed new sanctions on the isolated
nation after the North Korean government
launched a satellite into orbit in February.
While North Korea denied allegations that
the launch was connected with its military
program, the maneuver was ruled to be
in direct violation of U.N. resolutions that
ban the country from using ballistic missile technology. The military exercises will
involve about 17,000 U.S. troops and will
last until April 30.

The Oklahoma Small Business Development Center offers free training
for small business owners and entrepreneurs. The Oklahoma Tax Commission New Business workshop and the Small Business Federal Tax workshop meet the first Monday of every month.
The Oklahoma Tax Commission workshop covers the basics of starting a
business, including business structures, sales taxes and vendor responsibilities. This workshop is held from 9 a.m. to noon.
The Small Business Federal workshop, conducted by a representative
of the Certified Public Accountants, covers the basics of IRS tax requirements, including bookkeeping, business income tax, business deductions
and federal tax forms. This workshop is hosted from 1-4 p.m.
For the startups, it gives people an idea of exactly how to start a business; what kind of business structure they should choose and whats best
for them. It shows them exactly how to charge tax and how to pay the taxes, said Sandra Stephens, coordinator of the OKSBDC program at RSC.
The next of the three-hour workshops will be hosted April 4 at the Professional Training Center and is open to the community. Online registration
is free and can be found at rose.edu under Small Business Development in

Oklahomans feel the Bern

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders campaign stopped in Oklahoma to rally

Feb. 28 at the Cox Convention Center downtown.
Thousands of people attended Sanders event, which provided a
rally full of creative signs, live performances and a paper mache Bernie Sanders mask.
Horse Thief, a band native to Oklahoma, performed and Flaming
Lips singer Wayne Coyne took the stage to support Sanders prior to
his speech.
Oklahoma has a long way to go when it comes to picking our
leaders, but I think Bernie will help us with that, Coyne said. Secretly, we are all here to change Oklahoma, too.
Talk of higher minimum wages, benefits for working families and
his plan to defeat Wall Streets advantage on Congress were part of
the rallies agenda that left many Oklahomans ready to take action
Super Tuesday.
I am really excited for the politics in America to change, attendee
Faye Miller said. I like the idea that it is the people that are voting
instead of the corporations.
Affordable education and healthcare are a few of the promises
Sanders made that have captured the attention of millennials across
the country. According to Sanders, public colleges and universities
should be tuition-free, making higher education more accessible to
those who cannot afford it.
Sanders also discussed veterans health care and minority rights.
If you put your life on the line for this country, you are going to
get the best health care, Sanders said.
Sanders stated that according to some recent polls, he is ahead of
Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton. Although Republican opponent
Donald Trump supporters said his campaign prides itself in being
blunt, Sanders thinks his one-up is integrity.
We are doing something very unusual, we are telling the truth,
Sanders said during the rally.
Bigotry is not telling it like it is, he said.
Will and April Burgess, and their two sons, were among those in
the crowd. When asked why they supported Sanders, they said they
are thinking about the future.
Affordable health care and affordable education for my kids when
theyre older, April Burgess said. Its not just about us right now.
Think about the future generations.
Taking another dig at Trumps campaign, Sanders targeted the Republican candidates belief that climate change is a hoax, promising
his supporters that as elected president he would work together with
other countries to make environmentally conscientious goals.
Sanders ended his rally by stating nothing would make him happier than to defeat Trump in the general election.
We will win because bringing people together trumps divisiveness, he concluded.
In the Democratic race Super Tuesday, Sanders won four of 11
states conducting their primaries, including Oklahoma. Four days
later, on Super Saturday, Sanders won two of the three states. At
the time of press, he trailed Clinton in the delegate count with 571
to her 1,121 delegates. There are 2,383 delegates needed to win the
Democratic nomination.

Sen. Marco Rubio remains in third place in polls, with Minnesota being the only state the candidate has won in
the presidential primaries.

Rubio rallies for votes in OKC

by Rya Underwood
Staff Writer
Presidential candidate and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio rallied an energetic crowd of Oklahomans Feb 26.
The event began at 2 p.m. and was held at the Chevy Center in
Bricktown.
Prior to the event, a large line of supporters wrapped around the
building waiting to be let in. Once the doors opened, the venue was
packed from the front of the stage to the back wall.
Even with little room to move around, the crowd remained enthusiastic, listening carefully and cheering Rubio on at any given chance.
Marco Rubio is super motivating and hopeful, I would really like to
see him make it through the election and become our next president,
said Shiane Branson, a rally attendee.
Gov. Mary Fallin kicked off the event with a brief speech, but did
not give an official endorsement.
Before he announced Rubios introduction, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) said a prayer with the audience.
The well-known song Thunderstruck by AC/DC filled the ears of
attendees, while cheering and applauding echoed throughout the venue as Rubio entered the stage.
The Florida senator did not fail to take jabs at his opponents during
the gathering.
Rubio addressed the Democratic candidates. He discussed former
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Benghazi as well as Sen. Bernie
Sanders being a socialist. Although he attacked multiple candidates,
Rubio aimed the majority of his insults at Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Rubio read previous tweets from Trump bashing Rubio. In the
tweets, Trump incorrectly spelled several words, such as honor,
which he spelled, honer.
Some of these letters arent even next to each other on the keyboard, Rubio said.
Rubio expressed many of his concerns about Trump being
front-runner and possibly becoming president.
Its time to pull his mask off so that people can see what we
are dealing with here, Rubio said. What we are dealing with here
friends, is a con-artist.
He also expressed he will do whatever he can in his power to make
sure he does not see Trump become the next President of the United
States.
The entire speech lasted about 45 minutes. Though much of that
time he spent attacking his opponents, Rubio was still able to address
a variety of issues. Some of these topics are listed below:

Free enterprise

Immigration

Health care

Student loan debt

Religious freedoms

Bearing arms
Rubio said one of his main goals as president will be to protect the
constitutional rights of the American people.
He also stated that his first day in office he wants to eliminate any
unconstitutional laws Obama has in effect.

Trump visits OKC days before

Super Tuesday

by Kelsey Morgan
Editor-in-Chief
Days before Super Tuesday, thousands showed up to support Presidential candidate Donald Trump at his campaign rally Feb. 26 at the
Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.
The event opened with campaign chairman Dan Keating stating
more than 50,000 Oklahomans supported Trump at various rallies
across the state.
Keating is the president of Summit Consolidated Group and announced he is co-chairing Trumps endeavors in Oklahoma.
Pastor Mark Burns led the rallys invocation.
How great is a leader that can turn an enemy into a friend, Burns
said.
Burns is the founder and senior pastor of the Harvest Praise and
Worship Center in Easley, South Carolina. He is an evangelist, which
happens to be a demographic from which Trump has struggled to
obtain support.
Christians will again have a friend in the White House, Burns
indicated.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced his support for Trumps
campaign the morning of the rally.
We come to Oklahoma full of optimism for the future, Christie
said.
Fellow Republican presidential hopeful Marco Rubio stopped in
Oklahoma City hours before Trumps campaign and days after a significant debate where Rubio questioned Trumps character.
Rubio, your campaign is almost over, buddy, Christie said.
During his speech, Trump discussed his intentions to build a
$10-12 billion wall separating Mexico from the U.S., which would be
funded by Mexico. He also spoke on creating more jobs and his goals
for smarter foreign trade.
Were not free traders; were stupid traders, Trump said.
Trumps promises to become better foreign traders include putting
tariffs on outgoing products. He targeted Carrier, an air conditioning
company moving its warehouses to Mexico, stating each air conditioning unit moved from Mexico to the U.S. through the secured
border will have a 35 percent tariff.
Other foreign policies that would be implemented if he is elected
president would be refusing to expand energy and power unless allies
strive to do the same as well, and refusing to defend countries such
as Saudi Arabia, Japan and South Korea without compensation.
We have 28,000 soldiers on the line, and we get practically nothing, he said. We cannot continue to be the policeman of the world
and not be reimbursed.
Trump also promised to keep and create American jobs. He stated
the employment rate is not truly 5 percent, but 25 percent. He explained that when Americans stop looking for jobs after a period of
time, they are put on a list that marks them employed.
Its a phony list and a phony number, Trump stated.
March 1 hundreds of thousands of people across 11 states voted in
their states primary. Trump swept Super Tuesday with seven states
under his belt. Despite Trumps efforts, however, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz
won Oklahoma. Cruz won three states and Rubio won one.
Four state primaries were held March 5, also known as Super Saturday. Trump won Kentucky and Louisiana and had 428 delegates
at press time. Republican candidates need 1,237 delegates to win the
GOP nomination. The second frontrunner in the Republican race is
Sen. Ted Cruz who, at the time of press, had 315 delegates.

OU football picks favorable

players for upcoming season
by Austin Russell
Staff Writer

Oklahoma Sooners football team is looking to recruit the top athletes

across the nation to make its team the best it can be for next football
season. The highest recruiting class is currently the top 20 high school
athletes from across the country.
It is definitely a dream come true, and I am very excited to see how
far we can go next season and to give all I have for this team in order to
be successful, said Logan Roberson, a new recruit for OU.
He was recruited for his size and athleticism, as were most of the recruits. Roberson, from Harrah, Oklahoma, is 64 and 338 pounds, was
recruited as a multiple use offensive lineman. That is what the Sooners
are looking for in both the offensive and defensive line - to add more
versatility to its line up and address some of the blocking issues the
team faced last season.
It is always a tough workout and there [are] times where I think that
I am going to die, but I know in the long run that it will make me a better athlete and just keep driving to be successful, Roberson said.
OU is well known for having a large recruiting class, and they will not
stop until they have all the weapons they need in order to go far next
season in hopes of winning a National Championship.
It is going to be an exciting year, and I cannot wait until I walk out on
that field on game day and hear all the fans cheering for us to win and
have a good year this year, Roberson said.

Warriors make NBA history

by Garrett Hare

The Golden State Warriors and Oklahoma City Thunder competed

in the most compelling, nail-biting game of the season to date March
3. The Thunder, who often play down to their competition, always
bring their best against the history-chasing Warriors. The Warriors
came into the game carrying a record of 52-5, ahead of the pace of
the 95-96 Chicago Bulls, who hold the best regular-season record of
all-time, 72-10.
The firepower between the two clubs when they meet is remarkable,
with three of the top five players in the league facing off; it is mustwatch TV. The Thunder came out with their foot on the pedal taking
an early lead and sustaining it throughout the contest. With around
five minutes left in the game, the battle intensified. The Warriors rallied back from a deficit of more than 10 points to cut the Thunders
lead of 100-99 in the last 20 seconds of the game. Durant responded
with a three from the corner extending the lead to four, 103-99.
Klay Thompson, shooting guard for the Warriors, quickly responded with a layup cutting the lead to two, 103-101. The following possession for the Thunder is where the weirdness ensued. Durant was
double-teamed as soon as he received the inbound pass. The Thunder still had a timeout to burn, but Durant opted to heave the ball
down the floor, which resulted in a Warriors steal. Following the steal,
Warrior forward Andre Iguodala was fouled in the act of shooting by
Durant; consequently, tying the game, 103-103 at the end of regulation.
Durant fouled out less than a minute into overtime, leaving much
of the pressure on Russell Westbrooks shoulders. Despite, Durants
great performance of 37 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, his
crucial mistakes led to the loss. Durant was overshadowed by one
of point guard Stephen Currys signature performances. Curry took
over in the second half and overtime. With Durant absent from the
floor, it was the Warriors game to win. Both teams exchanged baskets
throughout overtime. Golden State received a rebound with about
seven seconds left, and then dished the ball off to Curry, who pulled
up from outlandish territory to bury the game-winning three. The
crowd was astonished and left the Chesapeake Energy Arena with
their heads hanging low. Curry finished with 46 points, six assists
and three rebounds. He made 12 3-pointers, tying the NBA single-game record and also broke his own record of most three-pointers
in a season, with 24 games left.
At the time of press, the Warriors won 45 consecutive home games,
earning the record for most home games won in a row.

structors, where theyre not able to maneuver as well, so its just for
the safety of customers, along with the safety of the instructors,
Bergeron said.
It is recommended that all customers wear tight-fitting clothes and
lace-up tennis shoes. The fly suit will be worn over regular clothes;
and jewelry and other accessories must be taken off before flying.
Safety goggles, helmets, jumpsuits, earplugs and a training class for
customers are all provided.
First time fliers are expected to arrive an hour before their flight so
they can be checked in and attend the training class.
Returning fliers should arrive a half hour early.
Each flight lasts 60 seconds and each package has at least two
flights. In order to fly to the top of the tunnel, an additional $10 is
charged to your package.
The high fly should be included in every package, not just an addon, said Sam Durham, an iFly customer.
For information about packages, pricing or other questions regarding iFly, visit www.iflyworld.com. The OKC site is located near Quail
Springs Mall at 13600 Pawnee Drive in the Chisholm Creek
Development.

Oklahoma City introduced its first indoor skydiving location.
iFly OKC opened its doors Feb.12 and is located off Kilpatrick Turnpike near Memorial Road.
Indoor skydiving allows customers to experience a replica feeling of
skydiving without actually jumping out of a plane.
The skydiving simulation is produced by a vertically constructed
wind tunnel. The tunnel has fans at the top to draw air in and push to
the bottom.
The air is then pushed back to the top through an inlet contractor.
This process compresses and accelerates the air before reentering the
flight chamber. The entire process generates a steady flow of air.
All iFly instructors are properly trained and certified.
We are governed by the International Bodyflight Association, said
Shelly Bergeron, iFly attending manager. There is a progression chart
they have to go through to be able to fly certain individuals along with
certain flight suits.
In order to enhance safety measures, iFly has a weight limit for all
fliers.
If you weigh more than 250 pounds, we have to turn the air speed
on the fans up so high that it actually causes problems for our in-
