This is a 50 minute midterm exam.

You may not consult any notes or books during the exam, and calculators are not
allowed. Show all of your work on each problem and simplify answers as much as
possible.
This exam has 4 problems worth 5 points each.

y dA, where D is the triangle with vertices (0, 0), (2, 0), and (1, 1).

2. (5 points) Compute
D

Solution: This triangle is both a type I and a type II region, but the boundaries are nicer
when we treat it as a type II region:
D = {(x, y) | 0 y 1, y x 2 y}.
Then

3. (5 points) Find the volume of the region enclosed by the surface z = 1 (x2 + y 2 )3/2 and the
plane z = 0.

Solution: The surface and the plane intersect when

1 (x2 + y 2 )3/2 = 0,
that is, when x2 + y 2 = 1, so the intersection is the circle with radius 1. The region, W ,
can therefore be described as
W = {(x, y, z) | x2 + y 2 1, 0 z 1 (x2 + y 2 )3/2 },
and we can express the volume as
ZZZ

V (W ) =

D

ZZ

1 (x2 + y 2 )3/2 dA,

(1)

where
D = {(x, y) | x2 + y 2 1}.
(alternatively, we could have arrived to the same conclusion (1) without triple integrals, by
recognizing that W is the region under the graph of z = 1 (x2 + y 2 )3/2 above the domain
D, and volumes of regions under graphs are given by double integrals)
It remains to compute the resulting double integral. We use polar coordinates to get

4. (5 points) Compute the integral
0

x cos(y 2 ) dy dx.

x2

Solution: To compute this integral, we exchange the order of integration. That means we
have to identify the domain
D = {(x, y) | 0 x 2, x2 y 4}
as the domain bounded by the line x = 2, the parabola y = x2 , and the line y = 0, and
rewrite this as a type II domain,
D = {(x, y) | 0 y 4, 0 x
Now we use Fubinis theorem to write
